New recruits for Kyushu 2017

Recommended Posts

Turns out Takagi is also in that 2016 Inter-High results PDF - he was a member of the sumo team at Niinagakuen Asahigaoka High School along with stablemate Sakurafuji (Yano) who entered ozumo a year ago and encouraged Takagi to join him in Isegahama-beya. They both helped in winning the school's first Kanagawa prefectural team title in June 2016, a couple of months before the Inter-High.

Time for a total stab in the dark - maybe his shikona is Shinfuji, with 新 being the first character of the school name (新名学園旭丘高).

Thanks very much for the videos and comprehensive coverage as always! (Signofapproval...)

One thing I've wondered but continually missed is where do the kesho mawashi come from that these guys are wearing? They're not too likely to have sponsors or fan clubs at this stage, so are the kesho-mawashi property of their heya or on loan from current sekitori?

(I didn't find this in a search which means I'm probably doing it wrong)

All Sekitori have fan clubs. Either from their home town or school. It's a big deal when a Makushita rikishi is promoted to Juryo. That's why these promotions are announced 3 days after the basho ends. As far as I know, the Sekitori own their kesho mawashi.

Oops. I thought your question was about shin-Juryo.

As far as I'm aware the mae-zumo guys borrow some. Either a personal connection or through the heya .

Yes, that is correct.

They are on loan from rikishi in their heya/ichimon.  Most of them have the name of the owner on them.

Yes, I know. I was asking about the mae-zumo guys in the video above - where the kesho-mawashi they're wearing in the video came from.

I sometimes post who comes in which kesho-mawashi at the presentation: mostly those of the shisho, else of another oyakata or an active sekitori of the heya - but if a (new) heya of an oyakata with not that much kesho mawashi should have many new recruits, they could borrow them from former heya-mates or the old heya of the shisho.

I forgot to note the verified shikona after Day 8...Yubinhaad was right.

Kiminofuji 公ノ富士
Shinfuji 新富士

(DB note: Byambasuren's "record" should probably be 0-0-5 rather than 0-0-3.)

(Edit: And the various Shufujis are now corrected in the results posts.)

Already forgot once so before I do again, a few more minor details about this basho's maezumo bunch.

Watanabe attended the same high school as his heya senpai Takekaze, Kanaashi Agricultural High School in Akita city, and had sumo experience throughout his time there.

Similar story for Kiminofuji, he also attended the same high school as a heya senpai, in his case Takarafuji and Goshogawara Shogyo High School in Aomori.

Tenei was a point guard on the basketball team during his time in elementary and junior high school. No sumo experience.

Former school rugby player Shachinofuji played as a lock.

Regarding the returnees, Satoiazuma's two-year absence was due to a left wrist injury, Wakaseiun had a dislocated right shoulder, and Fukuda had a right calf injury.

Do the rikishi that start in Ozumo when they are very young have a chance to further their education in any way?
Are there possibilities for part-time schooling? Can they be supported if they wish to obtain a diploma to fall back on in case their sumo careers do not pan out?

Kids have a right to education. Shouldn't a fifteen year old filled with dreams of becoming yokozuna have some protection against burning his bridges to a good mainstream career?

In some professions like dancing where people start at a young age, there are special schools.

There is "sumo school", but that's not you're talking about.

Ozumo rikishi are not the only kids in Japan that don't go to the high school. A young Japanese lady that I knew never went to high school. Apparently her test scores were not high enough. At least that was the reason I was given for her not going....

I'm just thinking of not diminuishing an intelligent boy's chances just because he gets an opportunity in Ozumo. After all, these boys do not join up to aspire to a managerial position, welcome though some intelligence may be.

And if they do make Yokozuna and end up as rijicho, a bit of education might be useful.

I would say, it depends on the heya.

Let's take this one as an example.
