Now we have some people here on the forum - i wouldn't call them heretics - who say his time is over and he will never again have a zensho yusho. I don't think so. As long as he has the motivation to do it I dont see the problem, he isn't that old yet (31).. My benchmark is always yokozuna chiyonofuji he retired a few weeks short of his 36th birthday and still was going strong. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

When Hakuho retires I don't think he will be as old as Chiyonofuji was when he retired, but I do think Hakuho still has a few more years in him. He has proven multiple times that he is the best rikishi of the modern area. nothing left to prove. age is kicking in. almost all records broken already. Zensho requires 15 days of hunger, full concentration, superiority and also a bit of luck. and very likely, the nod of the NSK & pre-bout hand-over of some envelopes filled with colored paper that have some zeros on it.... where's the benefit for Hakuho to go through all this again ? I don't see it. he will break the record for most wins and probably get up to 40 basho yusho. but already 2016, he didn't get the most number of wins for the calendar year, as he rested one basho - which 'allowed' Goeido to get his yusho 14-1 at best, no more 15-0 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Churaumi 745 Posted February 4, 2017 As beat up as the top of the banzuke is, he has a chance. It might require a tournament where a lot of the top guys are hurt and he is feeling better than he has lately, but a lot of the top guys are beat up these days. But with the younger generations coming up strong, he is being challenged constantly, especially with his nemesis finally becoming his equal. Seeing as how he's also been injury prone lately, he's bound to drop one or two every now and then each basho. I believe he can stack some more yusho under his belt, but not zensho.
