Basho Talk Haru 2015

Recommended Posts

I've had this question in my mind ever since the basho started: Do you think Harumafuji will do his side-stepping "It was a henka/It wasn't a henka" tachi-ai this basho? If yes, will he do it more than once? I might develop this idea into a game from next basho! X points for getting a guess right, X bonus points for predicting the opponent he does it against etc.

He did the "not-a-henka"-tachi-ai today. Don't think it's necessary against Sadanoumi. He better should have done it against Ichinojo yesterday...

Yeah...but one of Harumafuji's strengths is his unpredictability.

It's hard not to love Aminishiki. He has a nearly perfect textbook tachiai every time he gets off the line. He gets his head in the sternum and his hands under the ribs, it's like he's just doing butsukari-geiko. If any young rikishi should try to emulate someone's tachiai, it's him!

I just realized Chiyonokuni is back and doing well.

i am glad to see him back in action, and hopefully healthy, however the Chiyonokuni we knew should be able to handle Sandanme hopping on one leg. Still I'll agree that I hope he can keep doing well and come back to the sekitori ranks where he belongs.

Chiyonokuni is back, apparently well and not fully bandaged !

One rikishi I am growing to like is Hidenoumi. I already liked him before but since he came to Juryo I started to watch his bouts more carefully. There is nothing special about his sumo, no outstanding trick, but he does everything well. He fights on the belt, switch to oshi/tsuki then goes back to the belt without hassle and without losing his balance. Barring injury he will be a good asset for Makuuchi.

Tokushinho reminds me of how things in sumo - and in life for that matter - go fast. It doesn't feel like a long ago when we were discussing if and what kind of sekitori Tokushinho was going to make. He is on the way down already.

I suspect that Ama's opponents prefer the not-a-henka to his harite...

Or the embarrassing yet memorable rear lifting seismic body toss for a lack of a better word.

Kimarite: okuritsuriotoshi

Goeido vs then Ama (or forever Ama to many)

And Terunofuji is the first sanyaku-debutant to start with a 4-0 record since Takanonami in May 1993.

How about 5-0? :-)

Is today some kind of Ozeki-hunting holiday in Japan?

Teru will get double digits this basho and start an Ozeki run.

He's 5-0 now, and have only 1 Yokozuna, 3 Ozeki and 1 Komosubi yet. And He can't fight Homarefuji, Aminishiki (both who are in a very good basho) nor Takarafuji

It's a golden chance for him

How about 5-0? :-)

Last time a sanyaku debutant started with 5-0 was in March 1987 (Masurao). :-)

But it's all about the torikumi. Terunofuji had to fight four Maegashira and one Komusubi on the first five days.

Masurao defeated one Yokozuna and four Ozeki to get to 5-0.

Looked like Goeido and Mawashi were playing handbags. Fuji and Ichi looked great today. Those two-arm locks Fuji uses to immobilize opponents shows his ridiculous strength.

The way Endō fell was really stupid. He could’ve easily broke the fall but instead he just went down on his knees…

It didn't look like it was the fall, more like his leg getting caught and twisted under Shohozan.

Could be, didn’t notice that. It’s a shame, he was doing pretty well so far.

Poor Hakuho. He always wanted to stage-dive, and nobody bothered to give it him. Now he had to jump all by himself, "not to injure his opponent of course". A bit of celebration for the 900th career win!

It's been a while since Kisenosato been pushed out so easily. Bit strange but if feels like normal, somehow. Anyway, the talk of a Yokozuna run should be replaced with talk of Kadoban after all.

Was this the Goeido which promised 13 wins? The one which had no idea how to handle Tamawashi in a Judo-like encounter? The Tamawashi whose best Joi result so far is 5-10? He may be talking of two bashos combined figure then?

It's always the same: If an Ozeki wins, he is on a Yokozuna-run and if an Ozeki loses, he is on a kadoban-run... (Laughing...)

Aminishiki is holding up very well to share the leaderboard with only three others.

Fellow verteran Kyokutenho isn't looking good but at least he managed to squeeze out one win at last. Maybe he will pick up now...
