Kintamayama 47,140 Posted November 23, 2014 Who is Kaspersky? I did it and my computer turned green, no niji and I'm hungry. Kaspersky is an anti-virus system. :D Oh, I see... I am a good friend of Norton.

Palidor 0 Posted November 23, 2014 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8g11PWf2qNtQXczaFZMVktGcFk/view - download this and paste in your NIJI directory and change that files. NIJI SHOULD WORK after this. Hey, thanks this worked for me! Unfortunately I only read your post now after the tournament is over. :'-( But at least I'll be all set for January. Hopefully no more NIji problems.
NisdeZG 1 Posted November 23, 2014 That niji patch helped me also. Thank you very much (Clapping wildly...) (I am not worthy...)

teo_heel 33 Posted November 23, 2014 Could we have a little more info on what this patch is, what it does and where it comes from. I share the anxiety about potential malware. I found it in our russian sumo forum, but that problem was solved on MyNiji page on Facebook.
torquato 1,075 Posted November 23, 2014 Could we have a little more info on what this patch is, what it does and where it comes from. I share the anxiety about potential malware. Where's the difference to the original Niji? Do you really regard a p2p software from some obscure source that opens up your network from the outside to your computer as trustworthy? Mmmmhhh... Akinomaki 41,710 Posted November 23, 2014 From when I first had the problems with Niji I knew that it was the system blocking the p2p communication. At first resetting the system of my old Windows 7 notebook which I use for Niji to one month ago (and getting rid of Kaspersky and another Anti-Malware software I tried out, switching to Avira again) helped, but not recently. I learned that Niji has an update button, but that update apparently has not that new version. The question is, what has to be switched off to let that new files work. The Norton virus check on my main PC found nothing fishy in the zip file.

NIJI SHOULD WORK after this. Thank you very much! It really worked. I got used to watch not only sumo via niji but also other stuff. This blackout was a real... However, strange that the guys behind Niji couldn't fix this on a proper official way.
Gurowake 4,141 Posted November 23, 2014 Even if it works to watch Niji, I would be extremely scared to use something like that if indeed the reason is due to some communications being blocked. If you have to set up your system to be able to receive communications more freely than you previously were, and do so using a random file someone posted on the Internet, I would definitely be worried that it would contain some sort of back-door or at least created some sort of security vulnerability that may not have even been intentional. I don't know nearly enough about Internet security to give a reasonable opinion on this matter, but it definitely would have me worried such that I'd prefer to use a trusted source that theoretically is supposed to know how to deal with the issue correctly.

yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted November 23, 2014 Seriously, though, I won't touch the patch with a 6' pole as long as I don't know more about it. "Russian forum" is also not exactly a reassuring keyphrase...

Where's the difference to the original Niji? Do you really regard a p2p software from some obscure source that opens up your network from the outside to your computer as trustworthy? Mmmmhhh... At first I didn't understand your post. Is what you write a correct characterization of Niji? I wouldn't know, as I don't have any knowledge in Japanese. So WHAT IS the deal with Niji, safetywise? If it's dodgy I'd rather skip the live action, as a lot of things depend on my computer staying functional and unaffected by malware. (Reasonably so, at least.) torquato 1,075 Posted November 23, 2014 Well, nobody knows who is actually behind Niji. Nobody knows who is behind this patchfile. Basically no reason to trust either of them. As for the original Niji, a year a go or so I digged into the network packets. They were the same used by SopCast, a chinese based p2p video streaming software. So the guys behind Niji must have had access to the sopcast code. Likely they come from China. They've changed it in the meantime to another network protocol, which doesn't run that stable, ever since. I couldn't detect anything malicious about Niji so far. And I think, if there would be, we would have been warned already. However, we don't know, who's behind it. So let's say Niji is a 4 or 5 on a 1 to 10 scale by now, perhaps. This new patch is yet completely uncertain. We should regard it as a -1, but it's probably not doing anything else than just getting Niji to work again. As far as I understand it, it just connects Niji to a different initial server to broadcast peers...? I wouldn't use such software on a PC used for business or which might give access to sensitive data. I use Niji inside a virtual machine.
yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks for elaborating. As fresh-installing my system has drawn ever closer anyway, I think I know now what I might do around Christmas...
bettega 433 Posted November 23, 2014 It may sound a little too technical but... ... in case of doubts I recomend a virtual machine as a sandbox to this kind of doubts. Create a virtual machine with some Win7 (or any other) and put Niji and his patch running inside it. Your PC will be safe from any threat.
Kintamayama 47,140 Posted November 24, 2014 (edited) I like to live on the edge. I also have trustworthy and not panic-inciting security software. I also have third-party malware detecting anti-spyware software which 99% of the time detects and quarantines suspicious files. My conclusions based on the above: Niji, to start with, is iffy at best, legal-wise. Niji brings me sumo. Niji is not malicious, at least not for me. Niji turns itself on every day at two o'clock, chimes twice, and turns itself off. Edited November 24, 2014 by Kintamayama
NisdeZG 1 Posted November 24, 2014 Well my process of solving Niji problem was like was describe on post. I first copy files from zip to Niji directory and then some number code show in the lower left corner. then I pres update button on Niji and he didn't update but after that I copied patch one more time and Niji start to stream video. Yey good for me. I'm ready for Hatsu basho next year. I'm still running XP os on my computer and have Avast antivirus and for now I didn't have any problem. Jakusotsu 6,370 Posted November 27, 2014 jpPlayer appears to be the same shady p2p business as Niji with the added bonus of costing money.

Let's see what the time give us, until Hatsu! (and thanks for you efforts - it's just because you that I could watch this basho. Don't give up. I hope to give a little "thank you" soon... pretty harsh economic conditions now)
Asojima 2,874 Posted January 3, 2015 FWIW, the Mongolian UBS Global has resurfaced again here. It remains to be seen whether it will continue to stream the sumo matches. I have been able to use the cobbled version of Niji on an old XP laptop with no apparent corruption. I have not been able to get it to work on Win 7 or Win 8.1 systems.
torquato 1,075 Posted January 3, 2015 For me it works on Win 7 SP 1. Well, whatever 'working' means for NIJI. Lately again hardly a good connection/ reliable streaming with NHK. Quality and reliability seems to change with the weather... *sigh*
