Toyonoshima was at the preparation meeting for this year's Toyonoshima-cup boys and girls sumo tournament, for the first time in Takaoka-city, Toyama, on July 30th.

Harumafuji and 3 heya mates on the 15th, in a shopping center near the Isegahama-beya training camp location in Sakai-city, called for better manners with bicycles and caution against bank transfer scam.

Mitakeumi arrived at Chubu International Airport on June 26 after having gone to the Phillipines on June 23, where his mother Margarita is from. While there he ate and socialized with 50 friends are relatives. "I ate a lot, and received a lot of power. I know I've gained weight, and did shiko in the ocean." This will be his first basho in the joi and he will be going against all ozeki and yokozuna this basho.

Endo did some baseball today: he threw the opening ball at a Giants-Hanshin match in Tokyo, so wasn't in Nagoya at the zenya-sai. Most is baseball news, so my overview won't get the pics.

I am not sure if this was posted, but definitely very cool- what does a rikishi do on his day off? Murakami takes a day off with Aminishiki and 2 tsukebitos. Sauna, buying some yukata, a manicure, taxi ride and cool jokes and lunch with Harumafuji and Terunofuji.. Even a back flip by the tsukebito. Don't know who he is - Tomisakae?

Then off to see Ikioi who talks about cycling and Karaoke. In Japanese but you can get the gist-everyone is having fun..

Terunofuji is heading back to Mongolia to get treatment for his knees which were giving him problems during the basho. "I had good tachi-ai but after that I couldn't do anything." Isegahama will also head to Mongolia to learn about what treatments will be applied. Teru will be looking at joining the Natsu Jungyo mid-way.

Very, very cool show -Sumo files even translated it-subtitles!! - Ishiura story. In a nutshell- son of the famed Tottori Johoku sumo club's coach. How a small bodied rikishi needs to cope with the big guys. Hakuhou took him in and regards him as his protege. Rare footage of Hakuhou totally out of breath training with him. Tells him to do 20 barbell lifts. Then demands 10 more. Then 10 more. And 10 more.. His father says his wish and dream is to see him fight the musubi no ichiban. Mother said she didn't think he would become pro since he never mentioned it.He wanted to do martial arts and left for Australia, but came back after three months. "I must admit, I was really relieved when he abandoned the martial arts dream.." she said. What brought him back to sumo was his friend and classmate Yamaguchi (another Miyagino beya rikishi) who entered at Makushita tsukedashi and made it too quickly to Makuuchi as Daikihou for 1 basho where a 3-12 sent him back down, eventually sliding down to Sandanme 65 with no injuries involved(!!) and was 6-1 last basho at Makushita 8 (41-22 in his last 9 bashos), which seems to mean that he somehow is getting his act together finally after 3 years, but I digress..

Anyhow, he tells of how he saw Yamaguchi on TV and decided he was returning to sumo and entering the pros at 22. When he called his father( a really strict looking guy..) his father laughed and said no way. But way. Interesting. Watch.

It's nice to hear them in every day conversation, we usually don't get to see them talk like that. Ama is pretty quiet, fun to hear he and Aminishiki chatting.

After being police chief Ishiura was at the Tottori city hall to be appointed "city sales special supporter" for the whole country, with the campaign "Let's dwell (=sumou) in Tottori city".  After a volleyball player he is the 2nd to be appointed, special business cards have been made for him as well. And Ishiura also from the governor of Tottori got the appointment to Tottori home region ambassador, all because he's expected to be in makuuchi next basho. The ceremony was at the sumo ground of Tottori Johoku high. http://www.asahi.com/articles/CMTW1609293200001.html
