Yaocho by mobile scandal-

Maybe, but why now? I find it difficult to believe they just discovered these messages last week.

Call me naive, but I don't. As I recall, they first had to reconstruct a whole load of deleted messages. Then they had to weed through all the gambling related stuff before they could focus on the rest. And I guess there was a lot of red tape involved before going public.

Well, it's at least plausible that way, but what do we know?

All the other problems have been logistical issues as to when the next basho could be held. There's never been a question about whether there should ever be another basho at all...
I feel very confident in saying the riji of the time were much more worried about the future of sumo then than the current riji are with this scandal.

Well, as of now, the current results of my poll show that a majority of the respondants think that this could be the worst problem that Ozumo has ever faced. If enough people believe that, then this will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So they're in the middle between the devil and the deep blue sea: either they miraculously find nothing in this investigation, or some more bad apples emerge. Which is worse?

If they're going through bank statements, I worry that it'll re-open the gambling questions for people they didn't catch last time through...

"On behalf of all the wrestlers, I would like to apologize from my heart to all the people in the country who love sumo." said Hakuho (finally) at a press conference today.

He also had an interesting response when asked whether he himself had bought/sold sumo bouts: "I can't say anything but 'no', can I?" Not "no", but "I can't say anything but 'no'"

If nothing else, I respect Hakuho for not telling a lie...

Not anymore, it ain't.. and if enough people believe there is a Santa Claus, it will be a self-fulfilling lunacy.

So now you're counting a maybe (which essentially is 'I don't know, we'll have to see') as a yes? Allow me to chuckle.

No, I'm not. If you'll try reading a little more slowly, you'll plainly see that I said the majority said this _could be_ the worst crisis ever. And that's exactly what the poll responses say, sir.

The new Juryo promotees are voicing their anxiety over how they are to be treated money-wise. As it stands now, the promotees will receive no money in March, while a Juryo demotee like Chiyohakuhou who admitted to yaocho will be receiving his usual Juryo salary. To address this and other problems, the Kyokai is convening as we speak. The decision they should be reaching is salaries will be paid according to the new Banzuke, which will be recognized and announced on the day it was planned to be-February 28th. "I really went through hard times to get back up to Juryo, and now this? I don't know what will happen.." said Tamaasuka. "Am I being promoted or not? I haven't a clue.. I need that salary. My monthly bandage expenses alone are around the 20,000 yen mark, " added Masuraumi.

Funny story. One of the questionnaires came back with the "Have you ever seen a match you deemed to be yaocho" box ticked. When asked when this happened, the response was "1965, in the bout between Maenoyama and Kotozakura." The person will be brought in for further questioning.

The Kyokai announced today that the three rikishi/oyakata that have admitted to yaocho will continue to receive their salary as normal until their punishments are handed down.

But don't worry, I'm sure that their strong sense of professionalism will ensure that none of them try to obstruct or delay the investigation for their own personal gain.

Decisions:

Basho money will be paid to Makushita and under.

Each heya will receive 115,000 yen per rikishi for maintenance purposes.

The three new Juryo promotees will gain sekitori status on the day the Banzuke was supposed to be announced, February 28th, meaning they will be earning Sekitori money. Other than for this purpose, the banzuke itself will not be revealed.

New recruits will undergo their tests on March 5th, but they will be held at the Kkan instead of in Osaka.

"The punishment will be handed down after the special committee finishes its investigation. Until then, it's as usual," explained Hanaregoma rijicho. He added that there was no argument on that subject at the rijikai.

this is good news as this was the biggest concern of all my younger boys.. "will I have to shut off my mobile because I can't pay the bills?" etc..

Good for the new juryo guys..

Was thinking about someone like Kaisei who gets promoted to Makuuchi on the next banzuke.. which salary will he be paid? It isn't the same as the juryo guys from basically nothing to something but it is something....

I do not understand why the three admitted offenders continue to get their salaries.. at the most they should get some small stipend... not full salary.
