Peterao 3 Posted February 15, 2011 The Special Committee investigating yaocho announced today that one of the three rikishi who have already confessed to yaocho has named names of other rikishi outside of the 14 known rikishi, and that these names include current Makunouchi rikishi. However, the committee also cautioned that this is just one side of the story, and that it's too early to draw any definitive conclusions on their involvement at this time. Peterao 3 Posted February 15, 2011 Most of the rikishi asked have not yet complied with the request to submit their cell phones. According to NHK news report, from the original request on the 5th, as of yesterday (the 14th) only six of the 14 rikishi under the most suspicion have given their cell phones to the committee. A popular refrain among the refrainers is "I'm still using my phone, so it would be really inconvenient to give it up now." The committee will ask more strongly for the remaining eight rikishi to comply. If they fail to do so, they may well be forced to ask even more strongly. Until they do, one wonders how the "full accounting" of yaocho will ever be completed (though LDP Rep. Takemoto is on record today as saying that there shouldn't be a full accounting at all. "At this rate an investigation will last a very long time, and sumo will be destroyed! Just forget about the past. Sumo is not like school or the work place. It's pointless even trying to achieve complete transparency! Just promise to punish everyone who does yaocho severely from here on out and be done with it!", says he.) The majority of respondents to my poll who believe that this could be the worst problem that Ozumo has ever faced are looking smarter by the day.

Kintamayama 45,526 Posted February 15, 2011 So it's like a David taking the census kind of thing? Some things in life are best left unknown and all that? Just being practical. You know as well as I do that in a few months or whatever, this will be the gist of what will happen. And yes, it won't help anything if we find out a certain bout was fixed in 1961. There isn't even a rule/punishment against yaocho at this time- acknowledge its existence, apologize, and stamp it out. Give me my Sumo!!

The thing is, this is a once in a milenium occurrence: the combination of somebody stupid enough to leave evidence of yaocho, an outsider being in position to find said evidence, and the evidence actually going public. It would be such a waste to waste this precious opportunity to do a GM style reboot of sumo, and rebuild it into something that people living in Japan can once again be proud to be associated with. I'm fine with giving up sumo for a year or two or however long it takes to bring that about. If you need your fix of fake wrestling, The Rock is coming to Wrestlemania!!! Asashosakari 19,654 Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) Six people (of 78) have admitted to have "heard rumors about yaocho" in answer to the Kyokai's questionnaire. They will be summoned for clarifications. Worse, I think it's 6 out of the 990 all-hands questionaires, not the lower number of sekitori that were questioned. I wonder if this'll be like the Daikirin-Kotozakura match some other guy brought up in questioning last week, where both participants have conveniently passed on since... Incidentally, not sure this was ever specifically mentioned around here, but apparently the police confiscated no less than 58 rikishi cell phones in their big raid last spring. Given that, I'm kinda surprised they only found something yaocho-related on two of them even after data reconstruction. (Kiyoseumi, for one, must've been more successful at hiding his side of the text message conversation than he was at getting Kasuganishiki to delete his...not that it's done him much good.) Again, a false argument in that the simm chip can be cloned in a minute or two, and can then be inserted into another phone of the same type and be processed there, or simply the clone of the simm can be processed independently. Why do you assume that the phone has a simm chip? Good question. Many cell phone providers (for example Verizon in the US) don't even use a sim chip, and even in the case of those that do, the text messages aren't usually stored there. It's used for storing account data, or at least that's how it is in the US. Most cell phones have their own built-in data chip, which may or may not be so easy to copy. (btw, "simm" is a different thing, "single-inline memory module"; cell phone account data is stored on "sim" ("subscriber identity module") cards. fwiw.) Well, Riji reiterated last night that "a full accounting of the facts, punishment of the offenders, and steps to prevent a reoccurrence are a three piece set, and there can be no basho without that set." So to paraphrase Ivan Drago, if it takes forever, it takes forever...
