If Tertunofuji wins the yusho, then Onosato's shukun-sho makes sense. If Takanosho wins the yusho, it doesn't.

Generally, beating a Yokozuna who ends up doing well is worthy of getting the Shukun-sho, regardless of who wins the tournament.  Takanosho wasn't going to get a second sansho with his record unless he won the Yusho.  I personally would have given him the Shukun-sho unconditionally (for beating Terunofuji in their honwari match) and made the Kanto-sho conditional on winning the Yusho.

I thought that Wakatakakage could be up for the Kanto-sho with his return to makuuchi (à la Tochinoshin, Chiyonokuni...), but they don't seem to be as generous with it these days.

In the last 2 years, he has a 100% win rate in tournaments he finishes

It's because he drops out of the ones he cannot win. :-D

Wakatakakage has achieved more than Tochinoshin had back in 2014 (a yusho plus more than a year ranked at S1E, compared to four losing tournaments at komusubi) so maybe he's being held to a higher standard.

He also had an easy schedule.

Who was the guy in white shirt who congratulated Terunofuji when he entered the hanamichi? Miyagino?

If the basho starts at the last possible date (always at the 2nd Sunday of the month), which is the 14th, Terunofuji has a winning percentage of 100%: these 2 years the 3rd time, always after kyujo, all other basho he was or went kyujo.

The next basho that starts on a 14th is Aki 2025 - 6 basho kyujo likely won't be tolerated.

He went Kyujo for four tournaments, then won (14-1), three and then won (13-2-P), two and then won (12-3-P), so Kyujo the next, then he'll win two straight at 11-4 (maybe 11-4 then 10-5) and retire. Most likely not, but that would be honestly very impressive.

Aside: I think 12 wins should really be the new 10 wins, as it's equivalent to a full sweep for two years.

I'm a bit late to the last two days as real life took over for the weekend, but what an exciting end to the basho! Would've loved to see Takanosho getting his first yusho but Terunofuji is more experienced in these things than him.

As already pointed out by others, Onosato's ozeki run hit a snag with that last day loss to Takanosho. It would've been easier for him to aim for 11 wins next basho, and double digits for 3 basho in a row would look better as well. It's not impossible but definitely harder. Let's see if he can bounce back next basho.

By the end of this basho we have basically one healthy ozeki which is quite shocking considering just recently we had four. The upside is that Kotozakura managed a win over Terunofuji and that must've given his own yokozuna ambitions a mental boost. The downside is that we are running out of top rankers fast. Hopefully Hoshoryu will recover quickly, otherwise we might see some surprise ozekis on the banzuke (still looking at Ura :-P).

It was not a good basho for the veteran squad as none of the advanced age maegashira got a kachikoshi. Yeah Endo did well but he's too young compared to Tamawashi and the gang. I think all of the veterans will remain in makuuchi but next basho some of them, like Takarafuji, will have to get kachikoshi of they want to avoid juryo.

In the end a dramatic but exciting basho. The depleting top ranks should make way for newcomers but with the exception of Onosato I don't see anyone who'd be able to step up in the short term.

Aonishiki is advancing at the same pace as Takerufuji: 7-0, 7-0, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 - exactly one year after him. Takerufuji went from ms17e to ms6e, outside the promotion zone and thus needing one more basho as ms1w to become sekitori. Aonishiki is at ms17w and probably also will be put to ms6 for Aki.

Aonishiki is now 20 and Takerufuji 25.

He looked a little light in his one loss to Hitoshi; it'll be interesting to see how he fares against bigger guys. Given the rest of the records, I think he's likely to be in the promotion zone, Ms4/Ms5.

At last watching the last 3 days - on day 13 Osanai, who looked like out with a neck injury, but continued as if nothing had happened, fought against Matsui for kachikoshi and lost - and after the bout was completely stiff, unable to bow and walking like a stick: the neck after all

Kyokukaiyu, the buddy of Onokatsu since they went to Asahigaoka high, is advancing at an excellent pace, not much slower than Aonishiki. He was the unlucky one and Onokatsu the lucky last to start at ms15TD - under the new rules, Kyokukaiyu would have started as sdTD. I expect him to reach makuuchi next year.

Yep, cheeky kiss as well... Probably whispered "only 35 more to catch me" to him as well :-D

Thank you. For me the kiss shows that Hakuho himself felt how important for Terunofuji is and that they suppport each other as community. Probably Terunofuji was a bit under pressure to perform too. When Harumafuji won the second title to clinch the yokozuna promotion, I remember Asashoryu appearing from somewhere and lifting him in shitakubeya or hanamichi. So they support each other.

For the basho, the Aichi governor award will have 10 000 boiled and ready to eat quail eggs attached this time - Aichi pref. is the main producer (since 1985), and because they don't sell right now after a 1st year primary school student died, choking on one in his o-den school lunch, the winner gets a bunch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5hSkBxSSc8

I thought that's quite a big number of these tiny eggs, but in 2009 the award had 50 000 of them - maybe some other scandal brought sales down even more then. After that no quail eggs for the winner and since 1985 otherwise only one time in 1992

Aichi governor: (1992) 2009: 50 000 boiled quail eggs, 2010 canceled due to the gambling scandal, like all extra awards, (1986, 1999, 2004/7/8) 2011-18, 2020-: Nagoya kochin 名古屋コーチン chicken: 100kg meat, 1000 eggs, 2019 Mikawa pork - 5 whole. Other times 500kg asari clams (2001) or unagi (1987) - it varies each year ->list of awards 1985-2010

also in the award: a bouquet of 200 flowers, as PR for flowers from Aichi pref., the flower kingdom

Only 10 000 quail eggs this time, because it was in addition to the usual Nagoya kochin chicken 100kg of meat and 1000 eggs. http://www.pref.aichi.jp/press-release/oozumou2024prize.html

So if I understand this correctly...when the sumo association hosts the next kids sumo event, they should serve complimentary oden to ensure the quail egg prizes keep coming.
