Akinomaki 41,182 Posted October 21, 2022 (edited) A new recruit for Nishikido-beya, so in March Mitoryu at last will have someone to train with and as tsukebito (the poor guy may also have to be tsukebito for the oyakata) Kenshin Nakamura (15, 165cm, 88kg) plans to join the heya after graduating from middle school in Kakegawa, Shizuoka and have his dohyo debut in Osaka. He had the objective to go to the sumo world in the future since primary school, but there was no opportunity to do sumo in the vicinity, so he did judo from first year on. An acquaintance introduced him to the oyakata and he decided to join, after an experience stay in the heya in August. The rikishi of his aspiration is Mitoryu. The oyakata was with him at the city hall yesterday to report to the deputy mayor that Kakegawa city will have a new rikishi. Nakamura told him as the reason to head for ozumo: "Since I was small, when I watched rikishi I thought them to be strong and attractive". His shikona will be decided from now on, the deputy mayor looks forwards to it. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20221021/k00/00m/050/068000c Nishikido is of course happy to have a 2nd deshi again, the mayor as well, the kid - well in other pics he gradually looks happier o o Edit: no problem with his height, a reminder of the requirements: On 04/04/2022 at 12:32, Akinomaki said: only for the recent middle school graduates and only at the Haru basho shindeshi kensa, 165cm/65kg Edited October 21, 2022 by Akinomaki 2

Of course there is a better option, but if he really is such a fan of Mitoryu, who apparently had no other option when he joined that heya, it is the natural choice for a young kid with the dream to go into sumo but without that much knowledge of the choices and the bad choice that this heya obviously is. Nakamura liked the individual care he got at his stay in August, and the family had connections to the heya koenkai via an acquaintance, that is maybe the biggest factor for this scouting success. Well, Izutsu (ex-Sakahoko) did say on being asked about having only 3 wrestlers that he could give more attention to each individual one, so there's something in the individual care bit for sure. Also, just spitballing here, but I can think of a couple other factors. It looks like a bit of a joke to us, but if the kid is at a bit of a loose end in his life and needs the close attention and support for the next period of whatever he's trying, that matters more than being able to reach a higher rank but being treated much more generically at the larger stables. And speaking of the larger stables, maybe the kid might even be intimidated by the larger and more famous stables if he feels he doesn't know what he's doing and wouldn't do well at a more, well, hotshot stable like Nishonoseki or Takekuma. It doesn't bode well for the kid being a hot prospect or anything, but not every new recruit needs to be one. The related question I guess is what happens to Mitoryū and him when Nishikido has to shut down in, IIRC, less than 5 years. Hardly anyone's going to take it over, so where're they going to go - if they're still wrestling by then? But maybe by that time the same issues that led him to Nishikido won't be extant any longer. Almost exactly 5 years, Mitoizumi just turned 60 before the Aki basho. There always is a heya in the ichimon that takes the rikishi of a closing heya, and an additional sekitori class foreigner like Mitoryu will be gladly accepted everywhere, except maybe heya that has no foreigner yet - by then he's 33 and maybe will get an extra boost by a change and make it to sanyaku. Who doesn't want to change the heya quits on closure - the kid will be 20 by then and likely will go on to pursue his dream in ozumo. It would be shocking if this new recruit were still in sumo by then, but the big issue within the ichimon is that there aren't any branch out candidates either incoming or on the horizon, so it appears the options for any other Nishikido recruits and Mitoryu would be extremely limited. Hakkaku is right around the corner and would be the obvious choice, although he's retiring at a similar time. With Hakkaku beya surely transitioning to Okinoumi around the same time, one wonders if Hokutofuji remains in the kyokai if it's not wiser for him to pitch up at Nishikido at some point (difficult to see his sumo style keeping him going another 5 years), help recruit some proper deshi of his own, help out any kids like this Kenshin fellow, and keep 4 heya in the ichimon. Obviously for a recruit like this, what happens in 5 years is probably the last thing on his mind. But if you were being scouted with the idea of dedicating your career to sumo, you'd probably want to have some idea of who your coach will be the for the majority of your career.

Akinomaki 41,182 Posted December 14, 2022 (edited) After checking the recent data, I'm quite sure now Nakamura will join for Natsu, but I don't want to open that thread already without definite information. Tamanoi also visited NSSU recently and I believe is friends with Nakamura's head coach, Dr. Saito. Nishonoseki has also Nittaidai graduate ex-Yoshikaze as coach - Nakamura may want to become the uchi-deshi of Nakamura (ex-amateur yokozuna in 3rd year like our Nakamura, who started in maezumo, because the qf didn't last 2 years then) and join Nakamura-beya in the future Who gets future monster Nakamura - we've discussed this recently and it is one of the biggest questions in sumo right now, in one league with "who will be the next ozeki?"
