Well, if they want the stable they're running to remain open, they need to find someone else to run it.  If that "someone else" is an active rikishi without a kabu yet, they're going to have to choose between being sanyo and having their stable remain open.

Sanoyama Oyakata, ex- Chiyoootori had his danpatsushiki at the KKan today. 300 cutters, including 20 people from the general public he did not know. "I invited people I don't know because it is great to hear them say how they enjoyed watching me and have rooted for me etc.., " he explained. He remembered the words of the person who scouted him, ex- Chiyonofuji: "If you don't give up, your dreams will come true" and "If you hit hard enough you can beat a Yokozuna.."

20 asked to have a cut that day, only a tenth of what he had hoped for

About 250 invited, about 20 extra o - the other about 30 maybe provided by the NSK? Rather the Sponichi numbers sum up to 280+ and the about 300 are 290-

Bad timing, the jungyo started today and many who could have been cutting are in Nagasaki - 20 oyakata were there for a cut. The former Oshima (Asahikuni, 75) was also there.

Curious if those kyujo from jungyo are still able to show up and do a cut at a retirement ceremony, or if their kyujo precludes them from any kind of function if they are not able to carry out their duty as a rikishi?

ex-Asahisho seems to be extremely well loved within the kyokai and rikishi community, and has a great personality. I do wonder though if his seat isn't extraordinarily hot given the fact he's borrowing the Kiriyama name and the ongoing issues of Takarafuji. In any case, I'm glad he was able to get this send off as a member of the kyokai and with lots of love from those available to give it.
