Haru Basho 2019 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Recommended Posts

That was a hilarious matta by Shohozan, with the cheeky harite that Chiyoshouma definitely did not appreciate!

Yup.   That match made me smile although Shohosan is not an angel himself.

That was pure display of hate by Shohosan to Chiyoshoma.  Wow!

You're telling me. Shohozan clearing has love for Chiyoshoma. Damn.

No prize for Kotoshogiku ...

Aoiyama gets his and denies Tomokaze a prize at the same time.

Aoiyama: "not cool man! Take that tomokaze!"

If Ichinojo sumos like he did in this basho in the future (he's only 25 YO), we are looking at the next Yokozuna.   Then again, one basho does not tell the whole story.  Just ask Tamawashi.

We haven't had a Mongolian exacta in a while until now.  How long has it been?

S**t. What was Tochinoshin thinking? He’s lost five times in the past when he’s tried to take Takakeisho’s tachiai head on. He’s learned nothing.

Give Takakeisho the Ozeki promotion already!   The little dude deserves it.

Can Mita keep his Komusubi spot?   Hokuto?

Well, Kakuryu put up more of a fight than expected, but the result was as predicted. Ichinojo doesn’t get his playoff. :(

And that my friends, is why Hakuho is the greatest of all time. Kakaryu, a Yokozuna in his own right, had a winning hold twice, and Hak got out both times, and persevered, and won. Truly awesome.

That was an awesome sumo, and great basho.   Congrats to Hak, Takakeisho, Ichinojo for jobs well done.   Good to see Kotoshogiku and Yoshikaze getting double digit win.

Congrats to Hakuhou much better sumo in the second half, well deserved Yusho. I just hope his arm injury is not too bad. He is hurting quite a lot it seems.

The sad thing about this is that injury for Hakuho at the end. I dont like him at all, but never wish an injury to anybody so I hope it´s nothing serious... This was a great basho all together

Expected result, but what a way to get there! It looked almost as if Hakuho wanted to have the match this way to keep tension for a bit. I sure hope his arm gets better soon.

The last man to end on 14-1 and only win a jun-yusho without a chance at a playoff was ... Hakuho in July 2012. It’s something that’s only happened 15 times overall, though at least in Hakuho’s case he did get to fight the yusho winner Harumafuji (15-0) in a regulation bout.

Ounomatsu Oyakata and Hakkaku Rijicho both confirmed  Takakeisho's Ozeki promotion. Well deserved!

And here's hoping Tochinoshin can fight his way back to the Ozeki ranks next basho.

Hakuho better get to a hospital quickly after this. He had trouble picking up the kensho with his right. That ceremony has to be pure torture. The fans seemed pretty much on edge aswell when they put together Hakuho's troubles and the size of the trophies.

I really hope he takes his time to heal up. It would be tragic for him to miss out on a possible Olympic dohyo iri because of rushing back from an injury and going kyujo or worse before it. That final bout between the Yokozunae was fantastic btw.

Tochinoshin losing his rank... What a different a year makes. He got really unlucky with injuries, but I'm not sure if anyone will remember this at the end. Takakeisho bounced back nicely, it is up to the powers that be now.

Mitakeumi might keep his rank. Tamawashi with 5-10 will drop father down the Banzuke, Ichinojo is a given to join Tochinoshin at Sekiwake. Aoiyama has a great record, but it's very far down the banzuke. I don't think any of the 8-7 scores between M#5 and M#6 SHOULD leapfrog Mitakeumi, but I'm really no expert on Banzuke-making.

42 Yushos is impressive, as is 15 Zensho-Yushos, but there is another statistic that is as impressive, if not more - Hakuho has now won at least one Yusho for 14 consecutive years now. His consistency is just incredible.
