New ozeki Takayasu pics overview

A question has just occurred to me --
Is the promotion ceremony the same when a former Ozeki regains the Ozeki rank? Perhaps not when regaining the rank immediately after a kadoban makekoshi demotion, but for instance if Kotoshogiku makes a successful Ozeki run?

Good question! Has that ever happened in the 6 tournament era?

No ceremony is held for an ozeki re-promotion (of course not for immediate, but Miyabiyama would have had none for the denied re-promotion), like there is no shinjo shusse for a restart from maezumo.

Kaiketsu is an example.

A ceremony or an ex-Ozeki becoming Ozeki again? The latter has happened a number of times.

Thx for enlightening me on this topic. I would've guessed that the number would be fairly small or close to zero especially when there was still the opportunity to go kosho.

It IS a very small number, 6 or 7 times IIRC. The topic was brought up in numerous threads in the last months, thanks to Kotoshogiku. Sadly for you i'm just too lazy to search for those posts right now (Laughing...)

THX no need for that, it is enough for me to know that it happened before. I wouldn't remember the number or names for long anyway ;-)

The previously mentioned Kaiketsu is the only one to achieve promotion to Ozeki the hard way twice in the 6-basho era.  Anything before that is hardly comparable.  The ones to get back the easy way are Takanonami, Musoyama (practically one right after the other), Tochiazuma (twice, a few years after the previous two), and Mienoumi about a year before Kaiketsu got back the hard way in the 70s.

I guess the Taganoura stable might be starting the new trend of the chair illusion?

Well, Kaiketsu. As much as I used to love "Matta! Matta!"-oyakata, i may add that his first promotion might have been slightly political, as they seem to have wanted a second Ozeki rather pronto. Starting the run with 7-8 otherwise doesn't really add up.

(Sorry for spelling out the well-known. Handful of newbies around recently.)

Not that it adds anything to the conversation, but I remember watching Kaiketsu.  He was one of those guys who when he was "on" he was really, really good, evidenced by the yusho and string of consecutive double-digit wins. When he wasn't "on", he was pretty average.  Kinda like Goeido.

When Kaisei is on, he is about average.  When Kaiketsu was on, he was great.  He was one of my all-time favorites.

I followed sumo from July 1974 thru July 1977. After Yokozuna Kitanoumi, Yokozuna Wajima and Ozeki Takanohana, Kaiketsu was the 4th best rikishi. Ahead of future Yokozuna Wakanohana II and future Yokozuna Mienoumi. Much better than Goeido.

He smiles a lot. That's quite different from his sumo 'game' face.

I don't know if it's Moti's 'translations' of Takayasu's interviews improperly colouring my view of things, but he also looks a lot less careworn and way more than 3 years younger.

Note to English-only speakers who don't like watching foreign-language films: the (presumably) Filipino voiceover is interspersed with enough English words to give you the gist.

"Welcome home" "Welcome dinner" "international airport" "(sumo) wrestler" "overseas Filipino workers" and "second-class citizens" being just a few examples...
