Akinomaki 40,814 Posted May 31, 2017 ANN has again a mass of videos, though other channels, NHK esp. did live broadcasts press conference in 5 parts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlCBaPI_ET4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9v8ZE80NhY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bXUFWn_u1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aalRWx7x0c8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgPfNlR5rd0 Kyodo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoldH2XsGUA
orandashoho 720 Posted May 31, 2017 A question has just occurred to me -- Is the promotion ceremony the same when a former Ozeki regains the Ozeki rank? Perhaps not when regaining the rank immediately after a kadoban makekoshi demotion, but for instance if Kotoshogiku makes a successful Ozeki run?

Akinomaki 40,814 Posted May 31, 2017 (edited) No ceremony is held for an ozeki re-promotion (of course not for immediate, but Miyabiyama would have had none for the denied re-promotion), like there is no shinjo shusse for a restart from maezumo. Kaiketsu is an example. Edited May 31, 2017 by Akinomaki
orandashoho 720 Posted May 31, 2017 Thanks @Akinomaki -- I couldn't find any examples offhand. It does make sense, of course.

RaeucherLax 290 Posted May 31, 2017 Thx for enlightening me on this topic. I would've guessed that the number would be fairly small or close to zero especially when there was still the opportunity to go kosho.

The topic was brought up in numerous threads in the last months, thanks to Kotoshogiku. Sadly for you i'm just too lazy to search for those posts right now
RaeucherLax 290 Posted May 31, 2017 THX no need for that, it is enough for me to know that it happened before. I wouldn't remember the number or names for long anyway
Gurowake 4,109 Posted May 31, 2017 The previously mentioned Kaiketsu is the only one to achieve promotion to Ozeki the hard way twice in the 6-basho era. Anything before that is hardly comparable. The ones to get back the easy way are Takanonami, Musoyama (practically one right after the other), Tochiazuma (twice, a few years after the previous two), and Mienoumi about a year before Kaiketsu got back the hard way in the 70s. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&group_by=rikishi&having=2&form1_rank=s&form1_year=>1950&form2_rank=o

yorikiried by fate 2,029 Posted June 1, 2017 Well, Kaiketsu. As much as I used to love "Matta! Matta!"-oyakata, i may add that his first promotion might have been slightly political, as they seem to have wanted a second Ozeki rather pronto. Starting the run with 7-8 otherwise doesn't really add up. (Sorry for spelling out the well-known. Handful of newbies around recently.)
Washuyama 641 Posted June 1, 2017 Not that it adds anything to the conversation, but I remember watching Kaiketsu. He was one of those guys who when he was "on" he was really, really good, evidenced by the yusho and string of consecutive double-digit wins. When he wasn't "on", he was pretty average. Kinda like Goeido.

I followed sumo from July 1974 thru July 1977. After Yokozuna Kitanoumi, Yokozuna Wajima and Ozeki Takanohana, Kaiketsu was the 4th best rikishi. Ahead of future Yokozuna Wakanohana II and future Yokozuna Mienoumi. Much better than Goeido. Edited June 2, 2017 by Bumpkin

Naganoyama 5,949 Posted June 6, 2017 He smiles a lot. That's quite different from his sumo 'game' face.
RabidJohn 1,855 Posted June 6, 2017 I don't know if it's Moti's 'translations' of Takayasu's interviews improperly colouring my view of things, but he also looks a lot less careworn and way more than 3 years younger. Note to English-only speakers who don't like watching foreign-language films: the (presumably) Filipino voiceover is interspersed with enough English words to give you the gist. "Welcome home" "Welcome dinner" "international airport" "(sumo) wrestler" "overseas Filipino workers" and "second-class citizens" being just a few examples...
