For most of this time he's hovered around the M10-M12 mark, with two brief exceptions in 2021 - an ill-fated trip to the joi in Nagoya due to some banzuke "luck", and then a terrible basho in Kyushu that saw him drop down to M17. An incredible achievement. If Tamawashi can stay in Makuuchi until Aki (when he'll be just shy of his 40th birthday) he will surpass both Takarafuji and the 1000-mark. So as to properly record the ends of streaks I've changed the script used for these posts to use the previous banzuke instead of the current one. He also missed half of July 2022, so how is this considered to be a streak? Edit: Ok, July 2022 coincides with Tamawashi's two absent days, so it must be Covid-related. But what's the deal with 2019? Tamawashi is not quite there yet (for Makuuchi consecutive matches at least, although he does hold the record for consecutive matches in any division). For Makuuchi, he should move into 3rd place on Day 1 of this basho and into 2nd on Day 3. Daieisho has probably already avoided the main "danger" to his streak - promotion to Ozeki - and he's not had any serious injuries so far, so I think there's a good chance he'll get to where Tamawashi currently is. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

You're right yes, it's due to COVID, there was a discussion earlier in this thread and it was agreed that the streaks should ignore the mandatory COVID absences. I don't know what happened to him in 2019. He's been reluctant to go kyujo at other times since then, even when obviously concussed. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
