Is it just me or does Ichinojo look way fitter than before?

Oh yeah, he actually came back at his opponent with some offense rather than sort of hold them off and wait some more. He is still big but he can move more, he might be more consistent now. I like the kid, I want him to be more excited.

Terunofuji looks like he is back to being himself, a lot closer anyway. Endo is looking healthy and strong, Ichi is lighter and moving more! Ama is suffering, seems like he may never get healthy again, Geek has a tough basho, not sure he can get all the wins he needs with so many young healthy people. Goeido looks strong but that can always change I guess. Kisenosato has a good shot this time again, but there are some people back in action again and some regulars looking a little low, it will be interesting to see who digs deep despite injury and who is looking good but looses to experience, may not be a straight forward basho.

In a different note: in fact I do miss Kaisei.

Some screw up during Kisenosato's dohyo iri. He did well but Kagayaki was the tsuyuharai today for the first time as Kisenosato's two guys faced each other today so a replacement was needed. After the dohyo iri, the tsuyuharai is supposed to turn counter clockwise and leave. Kagayaki turned clockwise, facing with his ass towards the shomen side. BIG no-no. "It was my first time and I was nervous,, I noticed it after the fact.." he mumbled.

Hakuhou said today that the skin of the sole of his left foot was peeled off on March 8th when he went for degeiko to Tagonoura beya. Today, it was peeled off again during his match against Shoudai and hampered his movement. "I should have bandaged it up.." he said later.

Furiwake Oyakata (ex-Takamisakari, Robocop) did his first stint as a ringside shinpan today. "I really concentrated so as not to screw it up for my more experienced colleagues.." he said. He was given the prestigious second half of Makuuchi shift, filling in for absent Jinmaku Oyakata.

What we would be without Kintamayama's videos? :D

I started to watch sumo because of him (Kaisei) in may/2011 - it's almost 6 years watching sumo and seeing the big Brazilian guy fighting, and this isthe first time with him kyujo... kinda strange to me. I know that his not the sharpest sekitori, but he's a good one and deserves a place in upper makuuchi (even jōi-jin ), not Juryo like next basho (or eve makushita, the next after that).

Um. Ouch. It hurts just to think about that.

I haven't kept up on the injuries, just getting back into this after being away a while, but on a Day 1, where (usually) people normally look fresh and ready to go, there seemed to be a LOT of walking wounded. HF and Kak didn't look ready (while Ichi and Geek looked more than prepared).

I've been watching Hak like since forever (we all have), but I noticed something today, and I'm wondering if it's an optical illusion: For a man his size, is it my imagination or does he have really small feet? (In relation to his height.)

And can someone please explain the Pink Mawashi?

Japanese have a special relationship with the color pink, possibly due to the prevalence of cherry trees. It's not considered inherently feminine there the way it is in some western cultures.

I think pink van be fine, like the one Ura wears although I wouldn't wear it. The neon pink one that Hidenoumi wears is just too much though.

It's amazing what predictions get made after a single day of the Basho.

I would've thought that the rikishi's soles are heavily callused already from the constant friction of training, making them very hard to injure. Wrong assumption, then...

This.

A year-and-a-half in from me following sumo, I've learned that things can swing from one side to another in an instant. Nowadays I just enjoy the basho day by day and cheer for my favourites.

I used to think like this but then I realized it's fun making crazy predictions.

Sometimes crazy predictions are the ones that come true!

Back in the Renaissance times in England (maybe other places in Europe too, i don't know) blue was considered feminine and pink was masculine. The sun is pink/red and is hot and masculine, whereas the sea/sky are cool and feminine. Just shows you that colour associations are just regional and temporal phenomenons.

It was the case as recently as the early 20th century.

If Kotoyuki gets bored of sumo he has a great career ahead of him in Puroresu given that dive he took into the crowd...

Honorable mention for Kotoyuki: if you're gonna lose, might as well take the audience with you.

Well, first off, I didn't like the look of Tochinoshin landing as hard as he did on that bad leg. I cringed.

On the other hand, Aminishiki got me to smile. He's good at that.

Chiyoshoma, man. I wish he was more consistent, but I really like this guy, I've been impressed with his technique.

Kisenosato and Takayasu still looking strong up in sanyaku. Terunofuji giving a late shove...hard to tell if he was angry or just didn't realize he'd won. He was making a scary face, but then, he usually does.

And Kotoshogiku looks focused. Not a surprise that losing his rank would light a fire under his butt. I don't have strong feelings about him either way, but I do hope he's able to get the ten he needs, for the sake of his fans. It's a tall order, though, and he ain't exactly a spring chicken. We'll just have to see.

And there, lurking in the lower sanyaku, Mitakeumi and Shodai. Someone queue the "Jaws" theme, 'cause these fellas are hungry.
