Sumo goods

You know, on relooking this, I at first thought this was a book, and then wondered how cool it would be to have a book compilation of all the printed banzuke sheets over the years, like an almanac. Impractical to update, sure, but wow.

Before the NSK took over this task, there were the official publishers of the banzuke, and the old ones are in collections as part of a book

Maybe the NSK will remember this part of sumo history and revives these books some day - with the size of the banzuke now they have to be in size A3 though, with one banzuke on a double page, e.g. 5 years in one, 60 pages

New sumo publication: Heisei shin-nyūmaku rikishi monogatari. It has the four early Heisei yokozuna on the cover - the Waka-Taka brothers, Musashimaru, and akebono.

For the first 5 years of Heisei the 1st of 5 of the follow-up series from BaseBall Magazine to Post-war shin-nyūmaku rikishi monogatari, which goes till the end of Showa, also 5 volumes. Among my favourite sumo books, I have the first 4.

The NSK via the official fan-club started selling ordered nameplates written in sumoji by a gyoji, just the name for 11 000yen, name & address 16500 yen. On the back: quality product made by NSK. http://hochi.news/articles/20220617-OHT1T51117.html?page=1

oyakata names as example, Shibatayama with (real?) address

No, that's the Kokugikan's address - or at least the numerical component of it, with the yokozuna bit of it presumably an in-joke relating to Shibatayama's rank.

That is the usual miss one makes with that address, I always read Yokoami 横網 as yokozuna 横綱 first, but it is a proper address - indeed the address of the kokugikan. I thought it might be the address of Shibatayama-beya.

Bloody hell, you need a magnifying glass to see that!

This one's quite old (from 6 years ago) but a sumo account I follow on Twitter posted what I can only assume is called the Hak Mac. (OK, it's actually called the Grand Big Mac but it should've been called the Hak Mac.)

Covered and discussed in detail 6 years ago, Giga Mac would be the Hak Mac, not this simple one

Maybe new kensho banners will be made for this.

Not only the CM announcement, Hakuho went to the PR event in Shibuya for this. Giga-mac is the size that Hakuho proposed, with double the amount of meet of the grand-big-mac (1.3 the size of a big-mac), for which Hakuho did the CM (see above).

I'm not surprised that Hakuho proposed a burger with double the amount of meat.  Those Mongolians like lots of meat.  If I recall, during one of Hakuho's Yusho interviews, he made a comment to that effect ----- that after the Yusho, he wanted to go eat lots of meat.

The staple diet is meat and dairy products (nomadic food): mutton, goat, beef; cow or mare's milk, etc.  Most breads and grains are borrowed from other cultures (as is vodka).  Observant Jews should maybe bring their own food along.

Yes, that's right.  When I first became a fan of Hakuho, I became very interested in Mongolian culture and language.  That's what motivated me to learn how to speak a little Mongolian.  It came in handy when I was able to meet him and have lunch with him.  But my biggest fear was that he was going to offer me their traditional drink --- airag, fermented mare's milk! lol  Instead, he just offered me a beeru.

I assume the ebanzuke is digitally drawn, so asset recycling would make sense. Otherwise it's quite a bit of work to have to redraw every rikishi for every basho, isn't it?

Not that I'm suggesting the gyoji should adopt a similar approach for writing the banzuke...(Beingninja...)

It looks here as though still done by hand, though this video is a bit old at this point.

Since new e-banzukes are being made, perhaps it's still relevant.

If it's still being done the same way, then his little photo album of stock rikishi cutouts is exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned asset recycling. Except maybe analogue rather than digital, but the same idea's there.

I was unaware Ichinojo suffered from jaundice.
And someone ought to tell him that smearing butter on one's face and moobs isn't a good look.

These are really cool t-shirts.  For years, I've been hoping they would jazz things up a little.  I especially like the Wakatakakage, Ura and Tobizaru shirt.

It seems they will go on sale online during the basho, if my quick google translate is to be believed. I'd really like to get one of those simple ozumo shirts in the second picture
