East is on the right also on the proper banzuke, you begin to read a vertical text on the right Worth pointing out that the broadcasts (and the Emperor) view the dohyo from the North position (and therefore South is forward and up to them, with E left and W right), whereas we are used to reading compass roses from the South (with North up, E right and W left). This may or may not be a coincidence with the fact that traditionally, languages using Chinese characters wrote right to left, top to bottom; and since the East side of the banzuke was the more prestigious side, it would therefore be written first. Which bears out the fact that in the written banzuke, the very first name you see is the Y1E. This distinction is lost with the ebanzuke, where the right to left order is sacrificed in favour of symmetry, more alike the dohyo itself, and therefore the feeling that east and west are therefore reversed is stronger. 1 hour ago, Yamanashi said: Based on who they look like to me, bottom row: Hakuho (~), Kakuryu (excellent), Asanoyama, Takakeisho; middle row: ?, ?, Endo, Mitakeumi; top row: Enho, ?, Terunofuji, ? (actual layout Enho, Takanosho, Terunofuji, Yutakayama, Shodai, Daieisho, Endo, Mitakeumi, Hakuho, Kakuryu, Asanoyama, Takakeisho) Might be the medium, but they all look like they've retired and started losing weight, affecting their eyes and facial features. Other than Enho, who looks relatively the same, Hakuho, Takakeisho, Asanoyama, Shodai, and Mitakeumi are all missing serious amounts of cheek fat. What makes me wonder is they got Kakuryu almost spot on, fat and all; so why are the others all looking like they've slimmed down? I'm well aware of cardinal directions being a matter of perspective (see star maps). It's just odd with the picture of the gyoji in the middle like he appears on the dohyo, but the rikishi's sides are swapped.

Akinomaki 40,814 Posted September 15, 2020 (edited) This basho the NSK is eager to promote the new Kokugikan Curry. On day 1 with start of sales they posted a CM for it on their YT channel - I don't remember a CM being posted there yet. Yesterday PR top Shibatayama did enthusiastic PR for it in the makuuchi mid-break on Abema ("give it to me 10 days a week") o o It is a recreation of the real kokugikan curry in the restaurant ground floor, served to NSK members only, same recipe since the days of the Kuramae kokugikan. PR man Takasaki had the idea, to have some other food than only the yakitori. On sale at the basho and on the net. Obana 357 Posted September 24, 2020 I am currently engaged in an indigo dyeing project I have named "The 100 Facemasks of Bartholomew Cubbins". Mask No. 52 is a fan tribute to current yusho leader, Shodai. Who knew Bartholomew was a fan of Grand Sumo?

Obana 357 Posted October 8, 2020 No. 87 of the 100 Facemasks of Bartholomew Cubbins - celebrating the promotion of Shodai to ozeki. Shodai kind of resembles the mascot of the prefecture, Kumamon.

Yamanashi 3,904 Posted November 2, 2020 They really do a pretty good job with the faces and the heights. It's really difficult to get the belly, though; Takakeisho just looks like a small rikishi if you didn't know how round he is. And Kaisei standing next to Enho is amusing for the difference in height, but when you compare their sizes it's breathtaking.

Obana 357 Posted March 20, 2021 I am sharing a sekitori I pressed into service to do butsugari sumo with my iPhone. I bought him (human trafficking?) at Takahashi (sumo goods) on Keiyo-doro Ave. I am also showing off what I consider my Midorifuji souvenir sauce bowl. It is quite similar to his kingfisher keshomawashi.
Obana 357 Posted March 24, 2021 My day 11 lunch. I brought out a kind of cartoonish Ura on a small bag to join me for some tekka don and Suigei [Drunken Whale] Kouiku 54 gou junmai ginjo sake. Note the perfectly poured glass (大盛り).
