File under unexpected - Yokozuna Kakuryu is kyujo for the opening day, due to a rotator cuff injury in the left shoulder.

Easy start to the basho for Ichinojo, who gets the free win.

Confirmed, and if it is a rotator cuff he could be legitimately gone anywhere from a couple weeks to several months.

Previously announced torikumi were changed due to Kakuryu's withdrawal. It looks like they kept as many matchups as was feasible; I'd say only around half of the matches changed, making the torikumi look really weird for a Day 2. Ichinojo not only gets the fusen Day 1, but gets realigned to face Tochinoshin Day 2 instead of an Ozeki (or Yokozuna, which would have been typical).

File under unexpected - Yokozuna Kakuryu is kyujo for the opening day, due to a rotator cuff injury in the left shoulder.

Official expectation: One month of recovery time.

Given how out of shape one-monthers usually look in the next basho I wouldn't be surprised if he's absent in May, too.

Okinoumi is listed as Kyujo from Day 4.

Note: From videos, it appears he may have had a minor dislocation of his left shoulder or possibly a stinger. I suspect he may return. He didn't show any leg trauma on his walk out.

Sounds like a bad calf/ankle/foot injury. May take at least 2 weeks for recovery once treated.

Mainichi March 12, 2015

"Earlier in the day, newly promoted sekiwake Okinoumi pulled out of the tournament after hurting his left calf in a morning practice session. He forfeited Wednesday's scheduled bout against Tamawashi, handing the komusubi his first win of the tournament by default."

I saw your sig Fukurou

Four years after all that nuclear business started (on top of the devastating earthquake and tsunami), I can't think of a better observation to sum up what happened and indeed is still happening.

Day 5

West Sandanme 18 MUSASHIKUNI (0-2)

Can anyone find an article that explains why he is withdrawing?

The official word is in: one month of rest for an "injury to the medial head of the left gastrocnemius muscle, with intramuscular hematoma". Sounds like it's not a muscle tear, so perhaps not quite as bad as the usual leg injuries we get to mention here. Edited by Asashosakari

sorry. not much at all of an article, but the Musashigawa website just give these few words:

http://musashigawa.com/?p=2816

"場所前の稽古で足の怪我をしていた武蔵国ですが、状態が悪化し"

Looks like a bad previous foot injury during practice which has gotten worse.

Day 7 withdrawals

Notozakura - west sandanme 53
Obamaumi - east sandanme 58
I watch both of these guys a bit more closely than others, so I thought I'd post. Too bad.
*Yes, Obamaumi is because he has Obama in his name, so sue me. I wish he was also from Obama in Fukui - but beggars can't be choosers.

It's a reference to (no longer independently existing) Obama in Nagasaki prefecture, which is right next door to his shusshin.
