Natsu 2014 discussion thread **probable spoilers**

Conspiracy theories

1 Kisenosato yusho cos Hiro predicts Harumafuji will "knock him off"

2 Hakuho threw the match to Goeido as renewed Japanese interest in Ikioi and Endo is a fire he will be fanning as instructed.

3 Feel free to add ....

Love this basho! Great bouts from so many....

Any one else feel that Harumafuji's patting of the opposing Rikshi after the last few matches are kinda

" you know that you would be in the first 5 rows if I wasn't warned right?"

Edited to add

If this is too much of a spoiler please feel free to delete the post. Just enjoying this basho so much

4 Hakuho has been fighting like a chaotic shadow of his self in this basho and it was a matter of time before someone got him

I think Goeido's win was straight-up. His quickness simply prevailed in that one.

But after the strange ending to the Haru 2014 basho, pretty much anything goes in my mind. So I'll just go ahead and predict that Kisenosato finally gets his yusho and demonstrates that a Japanese rikishi can rise up and stem the tide of Mongolian dominance blah, blah, blah...

Yep Goeido's win was totally legit. The look on Hak's face after was all the evidence needed. He was pissed to have lost that, really pissed.

Hakuhō went in too over-eager after a good move, the same way Harumafuji lost one of his matches (against Toyonoshima, IIRC?). What a shame. :(

Well, at least now the race for the yūshō is more interesting… literally anything could happen, so I’m not gonna predict anything. Actually I’ll predict one thing: Kotoshōgiku goes kadoban.

Exactly, he was too sure of himself and this time it cost him the bout. But it wasn't all Hakuho's mistake, Goeido did very well to recover and take advantage of Hakuho's vulnerable moment.

I hope Oosunaarashi will be ok, he looked like he was limping a bit after the match.

And the only remotely fun part of watching Aoiyama's bouts is trying to predict when he'll try his inevitable pulldown. Boooooring.

I find it somewhat amusing how much they like pairing Endo and Osunaarashi. They clearly are looking to push match-ups that people will be excited to see instead of following some rote procedure. It somewhat de-legitimizes the sport in the sense of a pure competition with match-ups following strict rules, but it's overall healthy for the sport in the sense of maintaining interest.

I’m liking Aoiyama. Not liking Kisenosato’s extra shove. But he’s on his way for a possible yūshō…

I'm not so fond of the only Bulgarian left. His last 21 victories :

10x hatakikomi

2x hikitoshi

6x oshidashi

2x yorikiri

1x tsukidashi

Too many short fights ending in hatakikomi/hikiotoshi to my taste.

Though I respect one has to use what he's got to his advantage.

But still, not all that spectacular sumo.

An uncharacteristic mistake from Hakuho, though anyone else would have probably ended up off the dohyo, coming in that fast to be foiled by Goeido's quick feet, and he only put one toe over the tarawa. Liked Goeido's hustle after that point, even if it didn't matter for the result.

I like his hatakikomi wins. I prefer when he wins by oshidashi, but when that doesn’t work, his hatakikomi timing is great and always nice to watch for me.

Niji, thank you for the f****up before the Endo-Osunaarashi bout.... grrr...

Just saw araibiras 'version'. What the hell was that?!!! What a complete knock out from the tachiai. I havn't seen that before... Completely thrilled. Great!

Edit:

BTW, they keep their alternating pattern: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi_opp.aspx?r=12055&r2=11987

I think Kintamayama will be very happy today, seems like his favored son is heading for the sanyaku ;)

No gifts necessary for Giku till Nagoya.

Seems like the Geek has been forsaken by his peers.

Soon he'll be Forzeki.

Besides, reaching a point where you need 3 gifts in 4 matches is waaaay too much to ask. Hopefully he'll be more fit in Nagoya, and he'll not need it.

Hand on the back of the head. Completely legal. At no time did he pull the hair in any way that could affect the match. (Shaking head...) (Shaking head...) (Shaking head...)

Interestingly, it was HAKUHO who called for the mono-ii in the Kakuryu-Goeido bout. From the replays, it looks a very harsh decision indeed. At the very least, Goeido should have had a rematch there, but in my opinion he won it fair and square.

Kak will be buying Hak a few beers tonight!

Indeed! Just saw my recording again and listend more carefully to the commentators.

Is this a special Yokozuna-right, that they can appeal for a mono-ii from the ringside, or...?

Goeido should have had a rematch there

I think it's not possible to call a bout 'to close to call' if a foul is involved. That's a yes or no question, but can't be a maybe.

But the decision wasn't OK in my opinion. Maybe the Shimpan just wanted to warn the audience not to through their cussions too early all the time...

And I will assume that had nothing to do with Goeido handing Hakuho an unplanned loss yesterday?

Any rikishi sitting ringside can call for a monoii, but it is verrrry rarely done.

You're absolutely right...I forgot about that. I was just thinking that it was very difficult to decide, without a detailed video replay, whether it actually was a foul or not.

Still...like you, I think Goeido was robbed there.
