Something must be wrong with the query. I finally found Natsu 1979.

Rather something wrong with the Torikumi page of the database for Natsu 1979, as there must have been Sandanme and Jonokuchi playoffs, but the "Playoff" choice for the results is missing.

Fujiazuma got slapped during all of those false starts so his cheek should be warm and a little red.

The 4th attempt just looked like it was a false start but maybe the gjoyi & shimpan were too annoyed to care anymore.

Can it be that this is the first basho ever (= post 1957) without any playoff in any division? I manually checked back til 1990 but don't know how to query this.

Appears to be the case, yes.

Not sure what's wrong with the query (execution), but there are more basho without playoffs. Lower division torikumi data is complete only for Heisei, with many older playoffs also there, but some are missing. In any case, the last basho without any playoffs seems to be Aki 1977. You also can see playoffs (as far as have them...) in the yusho table. Divisions with playoffs have links on the result.

At 1:18 and 1:25 there are possible simultaneous strikes on both ears.

Justs saying that the east rikishi grabbed the topknot during the bout, but this is not visible in the video and surely wasn't deciding for the bout. Wasn't that the same oyakata raising his hand who prematurely called for stop last basho ?

I thought there might have been a mage grab at 1:25, but I agree, if that was it it certainly didn't have a material effect on the bout. Weird.

Gah! I overslept and missed the final matches and award ceremonies. Woke up just in time for the final award to someone who didn't look like Harumafuji and then a group of rikishi tossing a gyoji into the air. The the Oyakata All Stars singing "Hakiyoi" song in studio. LOL

So .... another yusho another zensho. Harumafuji is going to create a new trend. This one was the 52nd yusho by a non-japanese in the last 54 basho.

zensho yushos in the 15 day per basho era:

And guys .... just stop seeing conspiracies everywhere. I doubt that Hakuho wants anyone else beating him and even more when it comes to something as trivial as some extra cash for a zensho. It's not like this was Harumafuji's last chance to win something. The bout was great like these two always provide and the best rikishi (this time around) won.

enjoy the actual sumo and stop over-thinking every single nod, theory or gaijin conspiracy.

We are lucky enough to witness the simultaneous presence of two great Yokozunas on the banzuke. They are giving us great fights every time and they are undoubtedly highly skilled. I will say this again. Wajima-Takanohana all over again (even though Taka never went all the way).

Go figure, I just found a spreadsheet of mine from 4 years ago where I summarized all playoffs including available/not available status on Takayama... I clearly need to organize my trivia folder better.

And that reminds me of a surprise from back then - apparently they did they not do playoffs in makushita and below from 1950 to 195601...? Really strange.

Anyway, no-playoff tournaments after 195601: 195807 (still in the 8-bout era), 196107, 196211, 196709, 196711 (back to back basho), 196811, 196903, 19605 (three times in four basho), 197003, 197301, 197305, 197501, 197709, and now 201301.

I would guess they kept the yusho decisions more within each division back then, i.e. there were more opportunities for excess 6-0 rikishi to be knocked out of the race by 5-1 opponents. Nowadays if there are three 6-0 in sandanme and another three in jonidan, you're almost assured a playoff because one bout will be Sd 6-0 vs Jd 6-0.

Goeido-Tochinoshin: they could have given it as an utchari to Tochinoshin, or order a rematch. I've seen it awarded for less to a seemingly obvious loser. Tochinoshin on day 7 against Okinoumi was only slightly better than today.

Goeido landed nearly on Tochinoshin and the only part of his that was anywhere near the dohyo on impact was his hand - I think it's pretty normal to call that with kabai-te in mind in favour of the aggressor (or whatever the fashionable justification is these days). Okinoumi on the other hand was clearly swung around and went out foot/leg first.
