His oyakata or Kisenosato? The allegations that led to Takanosato's death involved both

Really? Wow, i didn't know that, i heard there had been a death in Sumo some years back but... are you guys saying that someone possibly beat up Takanoyama over the henka?

I highly doubt anyone in the heya questions Takanoyama's permission to win any way he can. If he would be beaten every time he henkas, he would be dead by now.

He hit his head on the dive out before the monoii the day before. The bruise was visible during the rematch.

He probably henkas the beatings too ;-)

Bugman, just to be clear, I was referring to the death of former Takanosato and previous Naruto about a year back, in the midst of an investigation of beatings at his stable, not the death of a wrestler.

And in case I came out wrong, I never meant for it to sound like I was suggesting Takanoyama got beaten to that extent on this occasion, I didn't even notice the actual bruise.

My aim was a combination of by-the-way comment on my perception of the current situation at Naruto-beya and the reminder of the fact that beatings in sumo are far from unheard from...

Ah right ok, i don't know much about the stables, one thing i do remember regarding Takanoyama was reading something about insulin injection, and whether or not he had been forced to do it, maybe i'm speaking wrongly here and if i am i apologise, but it seems to me Sumo has a dark side that keeps popping up now and again, it's the same for most sports i guess.

..as for Takanoyama i think he deserves a "best of" video, i've lost count of the exciting bouts he's had..

I'll see what I can do after the basho.

That would be awesome :)

Thank you! I didn't notice that. I'm relieved my suspicion was unfounded.

Thanks kintamayama!

Been reminded that Haumafuji started as a pusher thruster(?).

I can't understand why masonoyama's opponents go for a quick win offence rather than try to tire him. Respect? Concern for his health?

Then wouldn't they give the same leeway for injured opponents?

I don't think it's planned in advance. They all want to win out there-there were some long bouts with him as well. It's usually he who tries to shorten the bouts as much as he can..

There's a guy sitting in one of the tamarizeki seats wearing yellow clothes and gloves and clapping all the time. I'll bet the farm that that's the guy that is Hiyonoyama the Kyokai mascot.

Anyone wanna bet??

And Masunoyama can be pretty hard to stop when he gets going, so it's not really all that easy to prolong the bout. Might be easier to try to pre-empt his bull rush offense completely instead.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember any henkas against him, or at least not many. Worth a check..

I don't necessarily mean a henka by "pre-empt his offense". Could also be something like Aoiyama's plan of attack on Day 2, "winning" the tachiai to force Masunoyama into defense immediately. Even there Masu managed to start pushing after a couple of seconds, but he did it from such a disadvantageous position that he was nicely set up for a pulldown.

I think he will retire tomorrow. At least if he does so he will go out with a win.

The tears certainly had a "goodbye-ish" quality to them, and makes sense if he was waiting for a win to go out.

In any case, respect to him for the rikishi he was, and even more respect for his tenacity and his love for sumo, but I think the end of his fighting days is here. I sincerely hope he will remain as an oyakata.

Limbo time- I doubt he will retire before the basho ends.

If he does, I doubt he will stay with the Kyokai. He seemed to me to be an outsider. He'll join the family business. I don't think he was very much liked by his peers. I have no proof, just a feeling.

I remember when the stuff about his college days leaked out.

He was my favorite rikishi till recently, when I abandoned him like a cheap heartless bastard fan that I am for fresher meat.

Ikioi.

Is there still a family business to join? If I'm reading Wikipedia correctly, the company ran into financial difficulties back in 2008 and was taken over by some sort of company that specializes in revitalizing businesses that have sufficient assets but cash flow problems. His family might still be involved in managing it, but they don't seem to have an ownership stake anymore.

I did not know that. I did not think of looking up his family on Wikipedia. Just going by what I remembered a few years back when his father died..

In that case, I still think he won't stay with the Kyokai..

We shall see..

Tears before bedtime:

Sniff. I liked the concerned glances the yobidashi kept giving him while he waited to give chikara-mizu.

Hiyonoyama has a more "amorphous" costume, but this guy has a red-and-white tassel on his jacket that looks like ones gyoji wear. Strange in any case.

Edit: Win by Hansolo... tehe.
