Araibira discontinuing youtube sumo broadcasts (or is he?)

Recommended Posts

- I wonder a bit if sufficient numbers of people would actually go in and tag the lower-division bouts day after day.

I suppose this is not the biggest obstacle. Again, my guess is that this will work out well.

Here I go volunteering other people's work, but to avoid duplication in the Makuuchi realm, Kintamayama is already putting a lot of work in his summaries. If he's willing & able to provide the start & stop times for each bout, it could save work on that end.

If it's not as simple as I propose, then the original way obviously still works.

Just my NT$2.

I do it a bit differently- My clip is one whole one of all of Makuuchi - 6-8 minutes and mostly only the bouts, with subtitles and stuff (a format that annoys some people, it appears..). It won't work for those that just want to watch the bouts. In any case, they are up there so anyone can do whatever they wish with them with my blessings of course.

On a different note, some days will be posted a bit late this basho (hopefully, if at all..) as I'm acting in a movie for five days.. (insert icon with sunglasses)

Firstly, thank you Araibira! Your efforts over the past year greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the tournaments. It was wonderful to be able to view any bout at any time. My kids and I enjoyed browsing for unusual kimarite or particularly lengthly bouts. Many lower division rikishi whose progress I had followed without seeing their matches, could now be seen. It was a great year.

Doitsuyama and his database contributed a lot by making this archive of video easy to navigate. Kudos to him also.

It sounds like some forum members may have the time and technical skills to record the stream and make it available to us eventually. I encourage this effort. While it was nice to be able to view matches the next morning, I will be more than content to wait until someone has the time to set them up for us. Including these videos in the archive is the most important thing in my opinion.

Some have suggested that we encourage the NSK to help with this. I'm worried that they'd get protective of their copyrights if they became aware of what we've been doing. It might be better not to raise the alarm unless we know that they'd welcome our sumo promotion efforts. I think they should be happy about this but they seem unreasonably protective of copyrights in Japan.

The NSK feed service has already improved a lot. I wonder if they are interested in further developing that part of their website? If they made the bout videos available as an archive, people wouldn't need to tune into NHK to watch the digest. NHK might pressure them to not offer this kind of service and to shut down independent attempts to make such a thing available. Shhhh!

think you have hit the nail on the head in some regards here but the NSK are already aware of the youtube posts albeit not at a very senior level. I know a few people there who have seen the posts but think that even if the senior admin types know they would not mind so much.

The issue would be with NHK and the copyright you mention above.

One idea - bit of a longshot but if fans here, on SF that the NSK know or know of through work or other means approached NHK as well as the NSK together, maybe with a petition that would give it a better shot of being 'backed.

In this I am thinking Chris G who I will meet in an hour for a pint, Doreen with her NHK connections, myself as someone the PR people and museum staff frequently speak to. We have our differences but this is about the greater good. And, if/when the NSK see the massive rikishi presence on FB - oyakata included - who knows.

Well, I went on with my plan outlined higher up here and with big help from Asashosakari and Fay day 1 now has youtube video links to almost all bouts (except three juryo bouts because of unwatchable video in this record but maybe someone else jumps in?

Speaking of jumping in, anyone can help actually, like I had it planned. Firstly it would help if a few people record the stream even if not uneeded immediately just in case backups are needed. Only one upload to youtube is needed for a given segment of each day, but more can't certainly hurt. It would be best to announce the upload in the video thread to avoid double work. And sadly I can't really step in with the account of araibira because it actually is not possible to upload hour long videos on his account. It's likely that some people complained with possible copyright violations in which case youtube limits the future upload length. So it seems wise to me upload the videos as not public, so they aren't linked within youtube. I think it's somewhat less likely for viewers from Sumo Reference or this forum to post copyright violations to youtube (justified or not) but you never know of course.

Next step is linking the bouts in Sumo Reference, and I set up a mechanism to make this as easy as possible. The results page has a new checkbox in the options "Edit video links", and if checked the results page will have a simple text box at each video slot. Here anyone can enter the eleven letter youtube ID, followed by ?mm:ss to indicate a special start time if necessary. Tori-naoshi or more than one video for any reason can be written too, just separate the links with a space.

This does also work for older videos of course, and I actually started off since January to include a few links (other than araibira) - about 2000 older bout videos in youtube are linked from Sumo Reference, but there certainly is much more, for example itsports who has whole makuuchi days in his videos which would fit perfectly as exercise to include new links in Sumo Reference (again, for anyone who is inclined to do so).

wow, thanks to Doitsuyama and the others who help with uploading the bouts from makushita and below. I couldn't believe my eyes when I went to sumoreference and saw it. Unfortunately I cannot help, but I'm thankful for anyone who helps with the videos.

Side-note for those interested in helping to tag the videos: In case I only have time to upload a particular section but not to tag it, I'll be tagging the first bout of the video (possibly with a dummy time code if the upload isn't complete yet), so you can get the Youtube code of the clip via Sumo Reference and I don't have to post it openly.

A few alternatives cropping up-maybe they were there before, but there is this in Japanese and this in English which I'm pretty sure is new-all Makuuchi bouts up pretty quick.

Still, not the same.

As I saw the first bouts are already tagged.

Here is the link for the video Makushita/Juryo and Makuuchi.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioY4oRKzgn0&feature=youtu.be

I started to tag at the beginning of makushita ... if someone wants to join he/she could start in the middle of the video.

The last video Jonidan/Sandanme is uploading in the moment, might take some time.

The video covering upper Jonidan and full Sandanme is only 36 minutes, so this recording unfortunately does not contain Sandanme. And I just wanted to tag Juryo/Makuuchi, but saw that the feed froze. Any backups available?

Yes :-( There are some difficulties with uploading the file. I just try the Juryo/Makuuchi one again ...

I'll give the late jonidan + sandanme block a try if nobody else is already uploading.

Edit: My recording goes flaky at the same time as Fay's (right after Daihoyama-Koshinonami), so a couple of bouts may end up missing there.

Edit again: Yup, Wakakoki-Takasaito can't be salvaged on my end. Maybe somebody else was luckier. Rest going up now, could take the next 3 hours though.

I hope this works better for the rest of juryo and Makuuchi.

I'm sorry but I can't split the lower divisions, maybe Pierre has a file for it.

Those uploads are great from you two, and it seems like everything is linked what's possible so far (I did some links too). It seems like the last video stops just before Wakanosato-Kitataiki. I guess it would be ok to make the chunks in youtube smaller (like 40 to 60 minutes) as the risk of loss seems to be too high otherwise?

I give up for today, Makushita-Wakanosato done, the splitter doesn't work today as he should ...

Headsup: The Day 3 Jd-Sd part (Hokutonami-Kagawa to Kosenho-Toofuji) has been stuck in encoding hell for the last three hours, not sure what Youtube is doing there.

Edit: And another two hours later it's finally done, wow.

@Doitsuyama: Could we get the timecode edit boxes and video links on the simple-style pages as well when editvideo=on is selected? With the bouts in chronological order that feels like a more ergonomical place to add the timecodes, at least for me...

Done, and I filled in the links for the two uploaded videos for today this way.

And the Jd-Sd part has got stuck in encoding for the second day in a row...weird. Many thanks to the people that are adding timecodes, it's very appreciated. (I am not worthy...)

Edit: Okay, only half an hour this time.

Day 7 uploads will be delayed, unfortunately my connection died shortly before completing the first two clips so three hours just went down the drain. (Effectively six hours as they'll now be uploading at half speed during today's recording...)
