Not really kabu-babu, but according to the Kyokai's heya pages, former Shikishima and Musashimaru have altered their oyakata given names. Urakaze Hiromichi is now Urakaze Tomimichi (浦風 冨道), while Musashigawa Koyo is now Musashigawa Mitsuhiro (武蔵川 光偉).

I've only just noticed it but I guess it happened when they each acquired their myoseki recently.

And while the thread is up anyway - Nakamura has now reached his retirement age, so we're back to 6 available kabu.

On that note, I keep wondering if Magaki plans to retire. I was told his health is in a REALLY bad state :-( .

I can't imagine he would. After the heya closes, he'll have essentially no responsibilities in the Kyokai, so all he'd do by retiring is reject free money. Edited by Asashosakari

Not for Shikishima; the current Google Cache version of the oyakata list is dated Jan 27 and still had him as Hiromichi.

Incidentally, Musashimaru's name change preserves a tradition of sorts:

Musashigawa Yoshihide 喜偉 (Dewanohana)

Musashigawa Akihide 晃偉 (Mienoumi)

Musashigawa Mitsuhiro 光偉 (Musashimaru)

Former Maegashira Kobo has switched from the Futagoyama myoseki (owned by Takanohana) to the Tatsutagawa myoseki (owned by former Yutakayama, who retired at 65 a few months ago).

Kobo:

Quite an unusual move by Kobo, switching from an in-heya kabu to an out-of-ichimon kabu. With seven free kabu he is not in immediate danger of slipping through the net but it still looks like the change has put him into a worse position.

I could understand it if he would be owner of the Tatsutagawa name now but so... Maybe a hire purchase?

I've seen speculation that it might be due to the upcoming new regulations - it's quite possible that ichidai-kabu holders will no longer be allowed to hold a regular kabu in addition, which could force Takanohana into either becoming Futagoyama-oyakata himself or giving it up to Kyokai management.

Ex-Kinkaiyama and current Tagonoura Oyakata has switched to Iwatomo today.

Effective per April 9th. Seems like a bit of a pointless change at first glance since both shares ought to be under Kasugano-oyakata's control from what I know (or have seen surmised), but I guess it's the Wakayama connection between the late Kushimaumi and Kimurayama that may be the explanation if the latter is destined to be Tagonoura rather than Iwatomo. I just spotted that Katsunoura (ex-Kirinishiki) has moved above Nishikijima (ex-Zaonishiki) on the Kyokai's oyakata list. So I guess he's acquired his myoseki outright.

And no date stamp change (still April 9) on the department overview, tsk... Guess it's effective per the banzuke release.

According to the policy of the former oyakata (Kotozakura), at Sadogatake-beya ozeki and above rikishi after becoming oyakata may go and form their own heya. Kotoshogiku now has this option.

Nishonoseki-oyakata (former Sekiwake Kongo) has retired from the Kyokai. He has been receiving hospital treatment for a stroke since October last year, and the heya was closed in January. He was due to retire at the mandatory age of 65 in November.

Isn't the kabu-babu system being retired, what with the switch to the new accounting methods?

I see the current positions page is dated September 2nd - does anyone know what actually changed on that date? I don't have the latest previous version for comparison - normally I'd just pull it from Google Cache, but the Kyokai's infinite wisdom has made that impossible for now.

Edit: Tamanoi now has a spot on the sumo museum committee - is that it?

Editedit: Assuming this was current before (and I have no reason to doubt that), the other changes are: Nakadachi (ex-Oginishiki) takes over Hatachiyama's (ex-Tochinohana) Kyushu ticketing job, Kitajin (ex-Kirinji) rejoins the jungyo department (which he left some two years ago), Tatekawa (ex-Tosanoumi) is also jungyo-bound, and Kise (ex-Higonoumi) has joined the competition inspection committee. And Onogawa (ex-Bushuyama) seems to have changed his given name from 隆士 to 隆志 (still read Takashi though, and now matching his real-life given name again).

I have the impression that the datestamp on the "data" sites does not mean "last updated" but only "last banzuke released". Take the old oyakata list from 2012 May 12, for example. It already shows Kakizoe as Oshiogawa-oyakata and does not show Oshima any more (both changes happened on April 25) but the datestamp still says April 23, the banzuke day.

You better shouldn't :-) This page is usually updated only after rijikai elections and around the same time in odd years as there seem to be more and more one-year assignments again. Oh, and of course when big things happen, e.g. half of the shimpan department gets changed because of bad guidance. But I may always overlook one or two changes that happen for no special reason during the year.

And Onogawa (ex-Bushuyama) seems to have changed his given name from 隆士 to 隆志 (still read Takashi though, and now matching his real-life given name again).

He has used the 7-stroke "shi" from the very beginning. Might have been a wrong version on the goo site right after his retirement that I have copied into the kabu list.

Yes, the oyakata lists (both en and jp) were often stealth-changed without an update to the timestamp. The positions list is always date-exact though from what I've seen, including changes getting officially backdated sometimes. I'm almost ignoring the other list these days.

I did harbour a little doubt, because I could swear I'd already read something about Tosanoumi in the jungyo department. Couldn't find it on a quick search however, so I assumed my memory was in error. No matter. ;-) At least we've caught the Bushuyama issue this way. Edited by Asashosakari

I just noticed that Futagoyama-oyakata (Miyabiyama 雅山) has changed his oyakata first name from, either his real name Masato 雅人 (according to sumo reference) or his last shikona first name Tetsushi (according to a TBS program), to Masataka 雅高, the name of his 2nd son who died in June at the age of one.

Since no one has mentioned it yet: mid-November was the date for a big bunch of mandatory retirements. No less than four oyakata were to turn 65 during November 12th and November 18th.

Takekuma[12] (former S Kurohimeyama, Nov 12th), Shiranui[11] (former S Aobajo, Nov 14th) and Mihogaseki[10] (former O Masuiyama II, Nov 16th) are pensioners now. Nishonoseki[10] (former S Kongo, Nov 18th) is, of course, enjoying retirement life already as he retired "early" at 64.5 years of age half a year ago after merging his heya into Matsugane-beya.
