sumojosh 0 Posted July 22, 2009 His is one of two yusho portraits hanging in Ryogoku station. The other is Mienoumi (current rijicho Musashigawa). I've seen those portraits. They are quite impressive
Kintamayama 46,753 Posted July 22, 2009 So there's a free kabu now...Onaruto-oyakata, please report to the red courtesy phone at your earliest convenience. That would be Dejima, sir.

I meant the current one (ex-Buyuzan). Dejima's takeover isn't official just yet, at least going by the non-committal comments in the online papers' evening updates. Probably tomorrow morning though...

Asashosakari 20,132 Posted July 22, 2009 Going by what I read, it looks pretty final.. For sure, but not a single article I've come across thus far even so much as mentioned Buyuzan. Dejima's intai isn't official until tomorrow anyway (he had a bout today, so can't technically be retired on the same day already), and he'll need the kabu only then. Another technicality, doesn't he even have a three year grace period if he wishes so? Sure it'd be very unusual to loan his kabu while needing one, but it could be used up for a few days, no? ryafuji 824 Posted July 22, 2009 Now that he's retired, he's hoping to get a chance to visit his birthplace on Sakhalin (now Russia). Same birthplace as Taiho? Well you learn something new every day.

Well you learn something new every day. Yeah, I hadn't known that either. The article says he was born in Krasnogorsk as his father was a coal miner there and they only moved to Kurisawa-cho on Hokkaido (his official shusshin) in 1950. Asashosakari 20,132 Posted July 23, 2009 (edited) And the new guy on the hot seat is ex-Yotsukasa who switches to Kitanoumi-owned (and Kitazakura-destined) Onogawa-kabu, thereby freeing up Iwakiyama-owned Sekinoto-kabu for ex-Buyuzan, who in turn vacates Dejima's Onaruto-kabu as expected. Dejima is now officially Onaruto-oyakata. Edited July 23, 2009 by Asashosakari

Asashosakari 20,132 Posted July 23, 2009 (edited) Oooh..I'm on a roll! Well, that wasn't so hard to predict, now was it? In fact, minus 100 points for jumping the gun yesterday! What is this, 2channel? Edited July 23, 2009 by Asashosakari
Washuyama 658 Posted July 23, 2009 Yeah, I hope not, but Kitazakura looks like he might need it really soon..

I didn't predict-I translated. I was under the impression that you thought it wasn't final.. I didn't jump the gun-I just wrote what the papers are writing, and they were not non-commital-they were totally commital. Otherwise I wouldn't have been so commital myself. Asashosakari 20,132 Posted July 23, 2009 I was under the impression that you thought it wasn't final.. That's pretty odd: Going by what I read, it looks pretty final.. For sure ... What I was saying yesterday: Final, yes - official, no. Now it's both.

Asashosakari 20,132 Posted August 2, 2009 I know this is going off-topic slightly but I was wondering if an oyakata has ever made it to the mandatory retirement age on a borrowed kabu? I notice that Zaonishiki is 57 this year and is still going strong... This is way late, but maybe you're still interested in the answer. (I am not worthy...) This guy managed to do it. Looking at this list, isn't it more likely that Teruzakura was the owner of the Urakaze-kabu (while active) and loaned it to Fukunoumi than Fukunoumi being a kabu-owner for 8 months? Kintamayama 46,753 Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Official now- Ex-Akinoshima - ex-Sendagawa Oyakata is officially and for all intents and purposes Takadagawa Oyakata from today, boss of Takadagawa beya, better known as the "renegade heya". Ex-Takadagawa has taken the Sendagawa name till he retires next March. Edited August 5, 2009 by Kintamayama
Asashosakari 20,132 Posted September 2, 2009 And today (September 3rd) completes the trifecta of retirements by 1972 sekiwake yusho winners as Tamanoi-oyakata, former Tochiazuma the elder turns 65. Yesterday, the directorate approved the transfer of the kabu and stable to the younger Tochiazuma effective today (and with that, we're all out of jun-toshiyori again), and meanwhile the father led his final keiko session, concluding with the customary flower bouquet by his deshi. Having raised six sekitori since branching out from Kasugano-beya nearly 20 years ago, he plans to still be a regular presence at keiko in the future, which will probably come easy as he'll continue to live in the stable with the deshi and his son and daughter-in-law. Ex-Takadagawa has taken the Sendagawa name till he retires next March. The new Takadagawa beya was officially launched today in the new premises, with Hakuhou doing the Oh No dohyo-iri. 200 people attended. "I'm telling the guys to do 1000 shiko and teppoles a day. Real keiko is a battle against yourself!", said the new Oyakata. There are 25 rikishi, Makushita and under, at the heya at present. "I would like to bring up rikishi who honor their opponents in the old style.. I'd like to have a sekitori by next year for sure!!", he added. The heya has a keiko-ba on the first floor with 5 teppoles, and the third floor has 5 private rooms optimistically awaiting sekitori to use them..
