Zeokage 0 Posted January 13, 2006 On aderechelsea's advice, I'm starting this thread to request that anyone who wants to recommend a match that could be considered match of the tournament. At the very least any matches nominated should have something special to it that (if it was to happen) it could be highlighted as "recommended" on a site like Dale's. For example... Sakari- Kyokushuuzan. It had EVERYTHING a Sumo match needs- the now traditional niramiai betwen these two colorful rikishi (which I fervently hope Dale lets us see..), henka, running around, fighting spirit, rare kimarite, and a winner who thought he lost..Crazy. Save. The Tosanoumi-Kitazakura match is worth your while too, as is Shunketsu's Hayateumi impression. And, the Tochiazuma - Rohou bout, where you can see stuff you've never seen before.. Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted January 13, 2006 Day 5: Kakizoe-Kisenosato The most optimal tachi-ai you can find. Kakizoe's tachi-ai is simply perfect. This bout is a must save bout because of that aspect. Kakizoe won this bout right there despite the fact that Kisenosato wriggled free too at one point. Still everything in this bout was a consequence of the perfect tachi-ai by Kakizoe.
aderechelsea 125 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) ok here is my list up to day 6: day 1 Roho - Kotooshu (very spectacular ending) day 2 Kokkai - Asashoryu (every Asahoryu loss will be collector's item someday. This one is even more valuable because it was a very clear win by Kokkai) Hakuho - Asasekiryu (nice escaoe by Hakuho and strong Kotenage in the end) day 3 Roho - Kotomitsuki (the best Roho bout i've ever watched. Extremely powerfull uwate) day 4 Takamisakari - Kyokushuzan (there's been enough said about this bout) Shinketsu - Tochisakae (a henka ... the "salt and pepper" of Sumo) day 5 Miyabiyama - Kotomitsuki (Miya remembers his Ozeki years) Asasekiryu - Tochinohana (terrific escape moves by Seki and a nice win with a twist at the tawara) day 6 Hokutoriki - Tochisakae ( the epitomy of Hokutoriki's Sumo .... (Nodding yes...) ) Kasugao - Tokitsuumi (Strong strong Kasugao) Hakuho - Kokkai ( now THATS an escape) Tochiazuma - Tochinohana ( Azuma produces solid Sumo for a fifth time in 6 days so it is time to watch him. Alternative option could be his match against Tamanoshima on day 2 in which he shows why is he considered one of the best rikishi when it comes to close his defenses) you probably noticed that the only Asashoryu match i wish to capture in my memory up untill now is his only loss ... His performance is under par and his opposition was nothing to be proud of disposing .... a lot of days ahead and definately more matches to list. If i happen to remember another match later i will edit this post .... Edited January 13, 2006 by aderechelsea
Takanorappa 97 Posted January 13, 2006 Excellent idea! (Sign of approval) Perhaps chronicling the favorite matches somewhere on SFM might not be a bad idea, either? day 6Hokutoriki - Tochisakae ( the epitomy of Hokutoriki's Sumo .... (Nodding yes...) ) I agree with all of the bouts above, and also liked the Day 4 Hokutoriki - Toyozakura bout. This could also be the epitomy of H'riki's sumo - when he hits his target, that is. Toyozakura never had a chance.
Manekineko 200 Posted January 13, 2006 Day 3: Roho vs Iwakiyama - the gyoji incident... (Clapping wildly...) Day 4: Ama vs Asasekiryu - Ama has usually exciting matches with Tokitenkuu, but this inter-Mongolian match was good, too.

Asashosakari 20,243 Posted January 15, 2006 (edited) Another really good one is Tosanoumi vs. Kitazakura from Day 4 (posted by Dale a bit later than the bulk of the Day 4 bouts, I think)...Tosanoumi's doing a lot of uncharacteristic yotsu battles this basho. Shimpu 0 Posted January 15, 2006 :'-( No Kitazakura vs Yoshikaze bout on the banzuke.com website... Is there any chance for this stuff Mr. Dale ? :-)
Dale 0 Posted January 15, 2006 :-) No Kitazakura vs Yoshikaze bout on the banzuke.com website... Is there any chance for this stuff Mr. Dale ? I haven't been doing very well at going back and posting the three early matches which are skipped by the late start of sumo coverage on TV Japan lately, sorry. I've been taping them every day from the later highlights show, and I'll go back and add them. I'll make that match my first priority. Dale Why can't I do Baseballmovies? At least they have an offseason... sheesh :)

Jakusotsu 6,392 Posted January 16, 2006 day 9 Kyokushuzan - Kakizoe if you ever wondered how that old geezer still can give the young guns some trouble, simply watch this. Kotoshogiku - Dejima the Musashigawa Express looks shiny and new Ama - Takamisakari killer tachi-ai from the lightest of the pack Roho - Kasuganishiki Roho continues his streaks of brilliance by utterly destroying Kasuganishiki Tochinohana - Tamanoshima Tamanoshima's shoulder is paying severely
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted January 17, 2006 When the vid is up (bit early at the moment), I'd recommend Ama v. Roho. Somebody gets schooled in the art of tachiai!
Kintamayama 47,222 Posted January 17, 2006 (edited) And I would like to add a recommendation for the Asa- Mickey match. Well fought, and well executed.. Edited January 17, 2006 by Kintamayama
Naganoyama 6,039 Posted January 17, 2006 And I would like to add a recommendation for the Asa- Mickey match. Well fought, and well executed.. Yes - there was even some time when the outcome was open. (Applauding...)
Manekineko 200 Posted January 25, 2006 Bump. Found some time to review second week of basho, so here are some bouts that caught my eye. Day 7 - Asashoryu vs Tokitenkuu Very nice throw by the yokozuna, after some determined resistance by Tokitenkuu. Plus, "Pancake time!" comment - what more can you wish for? Day 8 - Kitazakura vs Yoshikaze Spirited waltz ending deep in the audience. Day 14 - Kisenosato vs Yoshikaze I thought *Kisenosato* was the one wiggling his tail at the tachi-ai? :-) Nice bout overall, too. Day 14 - Kotomitsuki vs Ama Ama really is wonderful... aderechelsea 125 Posted January 25, 2006 Day 14 match Hakuho-Tokitsuumi. Just watch the speed of Ho's hand coming up to grab the mawashi. Splendid throw at the end also.
