Kintamayama 47,222 Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) Sakari- Kyokushuuzan. It had EVERYTHING a Sumo match needs- the now traditional niramiai betwen these two colorful rikishi (which I fervently hope Dale lets us see..), henka, running around, fighting spirit, rare kimarite, and a winner who thought he lost.. Crazy. Save. The Tosanoumi-Kitazakura match is worth your while too, as is Shunketsu's Hayateumi impression. And, the Tochiazuma - Rohou bout, where you can see stuff you've never seen before.. AsaMoe 0 Posted January 11, 2006 There seem to be more kimarite i have never heard of before. (tottari, kirikaeshi, uchimuso) (or at least forgotten already).
aderechelsea 125 Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) we had 6 tottari, 3 kirikaeshi and 3 uchimuso last year .... Edited January 11, 2006 by aderechelsea
Odoriou 0 Posted January 11, 2006 But what's wrong with the NHK co-commentator? (Eh?) His voice is really scary (in the Takamisakari bout). (Applauding...) BTW: The Tosanoumi-Kitazakura match, mentioned by Kintamayama-san, sadly is not available on Dale's page.
kotooshu_bulgaria 0 Posted January 11, 2006 And, the Tochiazuma - Rohou bout, where you can see stuff you've never seen before.. Didn't Tochiazuma and Roho step out at the same time? May I also humbly request you to point out the stuff we've never seen before in this bout?
Kintamayama 47,222 Posted January 11, 2006 And, the Tochiazuma - Rohou bout, where you can see stuff you've never seen before.. Didn't Tochiazuma and Roho step out at the same time? May I also humbly request you to point out the stuff we've never seen before in this bout? I humbly will. Have you ever seen Rohou get shoved around like that in the air and almost out? Have you ever seen two guys crouching that low and tsupparying each other to pieces? And the yellow gorilla? Ok, I just wanted people to go to Dale's site. I get paid 5 bucks for every Forum member I send there. And yes, they stepped out at the same time and there should at least have been a monoii, unless Rohou stepped out with his heel right before he got back, which is difficult to see from where I was sitting. Zuikakuyama 1 Posted January 11, 2006 I cant wait to go home from work and see an isamiashi, whatever this is. I thought it was more of a kubinage (neck twist) that caused shuzan to go out rather than an inadvertant stepout.
Bishonohana 0 Posted January 11, 2006 But what's wrong with the NHK co-commentator? (Eh?) His voice is really scary (in the Takamisakari bout). (Eh?) The scary voice you're asking about is Azumazeki Oyakata. :-S The very first Hawaiian to reach Makuuchi rank in Sumo (1967). (Applauding...) His shikona was Takamiyama. I believe the the highest rank he ever reached was Sekiwake. He is Takamisakari's heya oyakata. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...;-) I'm not sure why he sounds like his voice box is squashed, but he has lived in Japan for so long, that his English isn't that great any more. I do understand that he is a very gentle and nice person. (Hugging...)
aderechelsea 125 Posted January 11, 2006 problem with his vocal chords i guess. he always sounds like this so he wasn't cold or anything.
Gernobono 467 Posted January 11, 2006 he always sounds like this so he wasn't cold or anything. he got hit on the throat during a bout and since then his vocal chords are somehow injured....if you heard him speak once you never forget his voice....
Zeokage 0 Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) I love that voice... to me it's like the Murray Walker of Sumo in terms of recognisability. Just that I could never remember/find out who he was. We should probably make a list of these bouts for each basho from now on... call it "Matches of the Tournament - Download and Save" or something. ilovesumo 12 Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) As a big Kyokushuzan fan, let me say................... YEHAAAAAAA!!! (I am not worthy...) It's not only his sumo, I love his acting. His face tells a story on the way back after the match... I don't care about the loss, it was a big win for Shuzan- if you watch it in a different way. Moti wrote he's colorful, so he must be a rainbow . ;-) Jonosuke's Sumo talk, day 4 Kyokushuzan 2-2 (losing to Takamisakari by isamiashi)------------------------------------------------------------------ "I was thinking I won it with yoritaoshi all the way. Then I realized the spectators were really showing their appreciation, the shock I had got just blown away." Takamisakari 2-2 (over Kyokushuzan) ---------------------------------------------- "I really did not want to give up till the last second. I was really surprised as I thought I lost it. It was a totally crazy sumo but I am really happy I was able to win it." Edited January 11, 2006 by ilovesumo
Asojima 2,874 Posted January 11, 2006 if you heard him speak once you never forget his voice.... His voice box was damaged by a tsuppari blow before I met him in the early seventies. He told us at that time that the damage was reparable, but it was a one time thing. If it was redamaged, it would be permanent. He planned on waiting until retirement to get it fixed. For him, retirement ended up being a long way in the future. I was surprised that he still had the rasp when I heard him on a recent video.

aderechelsea 125 Posted January 11, 2006 We should probably make a list of these bouts for each basho from now on... call it "Matches of the Tournament - Download and Save" or something. even though i usually download and save all the matches (i used to do so especially for lower divisions) i like the idea. it will be a nice way to recapture the magic of the basho whenever you go check this topic. It could get into the "basho tracker" too ... i try to do the same for my personal interest when i watch the dvds that Dale puts on sale. It is easier to remember that way which day was the matches you liked and view them faster ... so why don't you open a topic about it and see what can we gather for each day ...
