Kintamayama 47,171 Posted August 27, 2005 Hokutouriki (27) has announced his engagement to 31 year old 佃真実 (Tsukuda Mami?), an office worker. She works just around the corner from Hakkau beya and they have known each other for three years. Hokutouriki proposed in February, and the wedding will be held on December 17th in a Tokyo hotel. I am available on that day. "Even if I get married, I'll still be going out with the wish to win every day as usual!", he announced. Question is, now that he's getting married, will he put those two hands down??
ilovesumo 12 Posted August 27, 2005 Wow...4 years between them... Why do so many of them marry an elder girl? :-) Younger girls don't want them? What about the next generation? Most Rikishi will be single until the end? :-)

Hashira 0 Posted August 27, 2005 why are you here? anyway, I'm thinking that his wife might be upset about all the henka fines, and convince him to cut back
_the_mind_ 0 Posted August 27, 2005 anyone know how rikishi fair before marriage compared to after getting married? does it ever mean anything in how their winning percentage changes or doesnt?
Ryukaze 0 Posted August 27, 2005 why are you here? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To set chumps like you straight! P.S. If you can show us when the last time was that the kyokai actually fined anyone for a false start I'll actually give you props for your statement! (Nodding yes...) Sasanishiki 57 Posted August 27, 2005 In theory, but I'm not sure if it is actually now implemented. I remember some old threads where this was mentioned. Apparently it has been applied at some times and not at others. Thus, both of you are correct...sort of.
Kintamayama 47,171 Posted August 27, 2005 every time you false start there is a fine. every time, for every rikishi. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hehehe. Every time? Every rikishi? Where did you get this piece of information? I'd like to see proof of that. You mean the Kyokai does the fining or is it an internal heya thing? Do the guys have to invite their heya mates to dinner? I'd like to see written proof, not some hearsay bull. We've had this discussion before, and the conclusion was that no one has actually seen money changing hands, and no one could come up with any tangible evidence. madorosumaru 7 Posted August 28, 2005 For whatever it's worth, this is from the Takasago Beya web site: Fine for matta: Makuuchi - 100,000 yen; Juryo - 50,000 yen 勝負規定 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 勝負時間は幕内4分、十両3分。 「マッタ」をすると罰金。幕内10万円、十両5万円。

Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted August 28, 2005 At one time, a rikishi was allowed three mattas and was then warned by the referee. If he committed one more matta, he was disqualified. I am remembering this from 30 years ago, so I won't guarantee its accuracy. If this procedure still exists, this may be the fine cited above. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ooooh, an urban legend. How cute. Show me the disqualified rikishi, then I believe it. Or not.

Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted August 28, 2005 Well, I have all Makuuchi kimarite since 1927 and never there was a mata-matta. I guess this would be hansoku, but even hansoku was extremely rare before Asashoryu came around.
Zentoryu 154 Posted August 28, 2005 Back in December, Jonosuke posted a story about Ishide in which the rikishi talked a little about what happens when you've commited one too many matta: If any problems to be pointed out this basho though, it was his tachiai. On Day 13 Ishide was called up by the Judging Department for an urgent meeting."In front of three Chief Judges and an Assistant Judge, I sat straight and was told by the Director of Judging Oshiogawa oyakata, 'You must never to do a Matta, you should make sure you will never do it'. This was before my bout on that day and we ended up having two Mattas in the bout (against Gojoro). I thought this was going to be pretty bad". Gojoro's strategy worked well and Ishide got out of tachiai, looking unsure of himself and was easily pushed out in what turned out to be one sided all Gojoro offense. This became Ishide's third loss. "On Day 14 I had three more mattas. After getting the stern warning, I managed to pull off five more mattas in just two days. I just got too excited and started out," Ishide said looking dejected after the bout. "On the last day at least, I hope to go home peacefully without getting yelled at by the Judging Department". So on the Senshuraku bout, Ishide was really happy that he was able to execute a perfect clean tachiai and getting the win to earn the coveted Juryo Yusho. Ishide says even if he ever gets another shikona, it will never be Komahikari again. So it appears if you have a number of matta, you get hauled in front of the judging department to be yelled at. But at no point does he mention a fine or the possibility of one.

In his great book named "Dokuhaku", Wakanohana III clearly said that the NSK decided to fine the rikishi for doing matta. This move is not so new, as Wakanohana was not yokozuna at that time. If I remember correctly Masaru Hanada was rather upset by this move, as most of the rikishi at that time did. Best regards, Chienoshima

The question is, was it ever implemented? The Kyokai has decided on many things in the past, but the decisions were meant to scare more than to be implemented, like the famous "third matta and you lose" rule.. I am pretty sure it never was. The Kyokai never fined anyone for doing a matta. Maybe the rikishi involved was called for a talk, but I doubt that it ever got beyond that. Maybe some heyas did it on an internal basis like Mado suggests, but the Kyokai? I am still waiting to see one shred of tangible evidence. Sasanishiki 57 Posted August 29, 2005 Perhaps the Kyokai deciding on it was actually allowing the provision that a rikishi COULD be fined for matta. This would allow for both the setting up of the rule and it not being implemented.
Mark Buckton 1 Posted August 30, 2005 matta fines were in place but the whole concept was dropped a decade ago (a date is now even published in the Japanese language A-Z thingy of sumo) - so, no one is even subject to the fines now. Not from a book, not from a website, not from an urban legend - from the Kyokai direct. Akebono once said they'd been dropped - on TV IIRC. Incidentally, on the actual payment of such - when in force - I understood they WERE paid. Same staff.
