Asashoryus 5th yusho this year

Recommended Posts

Asashoryu just clinched his 5th yusho this year, his 9th overall by winning over Chiyotaikai while Wakanosato lost to Kaiou. I guess he needed this after his disastrous basho in Aki.

Good job from Asa after beating today and securing his yusho after Sato lost in the bout before.

the question is:

will he try to destroy Kaiou's chances of promotion (the ones left) tomorrow and become the "wall" for him ?

i bet he will try hard ... :-O

I hope Kaiou can beat him I show Asa that there is someone coming who can overcome him and take his place in the future.

Unless Kitanoumi changes his mind again in the next 20 hours, there really aren't any chances left for Kaio this basho. 12-3 jun-yusho was said to be not good enough. (And it shouldn't be, IMO.)

Congrats to Asashoryu on another very convincing yusho (after Day 14 already, no less), especially in light of the competition that was still in the running as little as three days ago. :-O

It really is too bad, if Kaio hadn't been "upset" by Miyabiyama on day 12, (in an ugly looking self-induced loss) he would be vying for the Yusho and Yokozuna promotion in his bout with Asashoryu tommorow ! Aside from that loss however he has looked nearly flawless so give the boy his props for making it this interesting (his strongest effort to date no doubt following a yusho) Give the yokozuna his props as well, after his loss to Hakuho it seemed like the walls might be closing in for once, but yet again when all is said and done he is still the last man standing. Be interesting to see how Kaio responds in their matchup tommorow, with really nothing at stake other than the win, because YOU KNOW shoryu will be head hunting regardless of his early yusho! - :-O Ryu

Uh, the future is that way, ahead....I'd like for Kaio to get the tsuna myself, but let's not kid ourselves that he's the "future" or that somehow he's "coming"...I dare say that the "coming" appelation belongs to Hakuho, Kisenosato, etc. In any event, Asa can't have his place taken per se so your point is a bit, uh, moot...

i cannot comprehend what are you saying here ....

you really believe there is a chance Kaio can overcome Asa in the future ???

don't confuse me with an "i love Asa and all the rest sekitori suck" type of guy but i trully cannot imagine something like what you are suggesting ....

Asashouryuu is the fourth rikishi to get 5 yusho in one calendar year since the advent of the 6 basho year in 1958. Taihou (1966), Kitanoumi (1978), Chiyonofuji (1986), and now-Asashouryuu.

Hope is moving too fast so its "brakes" start working last! ;-) Apparently, there is no question that the best Kaio can do is retire as an yokozuna and he can never replace Asashyoryu since Asa will be around for a couple more years at least, while Kaio is bound to retire next year.

I agree. The loss to Miyabiyama was the match that really cost him. That was why I was so surprised he lost to Miyabiyama. I wonder what their career record against each other is? Does someone have this information available on the forum? A link to a website maybe? ;-)

Ok ok...nice, but, to say it with the "Stones"

"I can't get no satisfaction"... (Eh?)

Next year, I am sure, at least 1 Yusho for Hakuho, ;-)

One Asashoryu-scandal (you know what I mean)

retirement of all current Ozeki (Arguing...)

and (you'll hate me for this) Kyokushuzan Komusubi (Applauding...)

retirement of all current Ozeki

It is true, that Tochiazuma and Chiyotaikai are in a, well horrible position, but both are young and i am sure, that at least one of them will recover. I mean, the difference to Kaio and Musoyama is 4 or 5 years.

I think Chiyotaikai will be just fine, he just needs to rest that elbow and get healthy (Give him credit for at least putting himself on the line this tourn and not just "withdrawing") unlike Tochiazuma who seems to feel obligated to withdraw at the drop of a hat rather than tough it out (who will not be back at Ozeki im afraid).....- (Enjoying a beer...)

You mean you think he should have toughed it out with a broken shoulder and a blown out knee? (Enjoying a beer...)

Don't confuse Chiyotaikai's gimpy arm and lack of fighting spirit with Tochiazuma's very severe injuries.

You seem to think that Tochiazuma lacks fighting spirit.

How can you claim that?

His injuries entering this basho were FAR more severe than anything Chiyotaikai was dealing with, yet he chose to compete.

Everyone from his Oyakata on down the line to his doctors and trainers wanted him to sit this one out. Yet he chose to compete.

How is that lacking fighting spirit?

Is he not putting his body on the line even more so than Chiyotaikai?

He has come back from broken bones in his shoulder before, normally career ending injury, and has competed. He has trained harder than any rikishi with the possible exception of Asashoryu to get himself back from severe injury. Yet you have said you don't think he has fighting spirit. Why is that?

Honestly I was amazed that he was able to come back so fast with the injuries he had before. He does have a lot of fighting spirit which is one of the reasons I admire him. I wish he could come back before he falls down to Maegashira but it does not look good... :-)

Tochiazuma most definately LACKS FIGHTING SPIRIT lol! His lackluster appearances on the Dohyo the past couple years should be enough proof of that. (and no appearing the first 1,2 days and then deciding you can't hack it doesn't qualify as "putting yourself on the line"), to go alongside his apparent unorthidox and somewhat dangerous ( especially considering his "glass" like durability) training regimin he puts himself through, running and sprinting at around 350lbs!! you gotta be kidding me thats just idiotic! Seeing as how your knees are already made of "glass" be smarter than that! His skills around the mawashii are garbage also (aside from "yoru"-ing) so maybe if he didnt get thrown so often he wouldnt have shoulder problems either! lol BAM! problem solved! Train smarter not harder, and as I've said before "Do you wanna compete or do you just wanna be injured" Tochiazuma will never reach his potential, and I'll be damned should he ever get back to Ozeki! -

P.s. All this talk by Chiyotaikai about "Oh im getting older" and such thats bullcrap also! Just sounds too me like he's fed up and doesn't want to take it anymore, wonder how he'll react if he loses his Ozeki rank too??????-
