Again the early PR event for the Kyushu basho: touch the belly of a popular rikisihi, today at the canal city Hakata in Fukuoka https://canalcity.co.jp/news/event/3998

Of course with the Kyushu locals Sadanoumi, Shodai and Hiradoumi, plus the everywhere popular Ura - and new ex-Tenkaiho (Kumamoto) - possibly in the team now - in for Ichiyamamoto, who still appears on the PR photos. With also Kyushu team oyakata Shiranui and Onogawa (likely the one plans this event). First talk, then singing, then the new Kyushu chief Asakayama, then the touching.

live stream:

for 200 via the fan club and 50 via the Canal City facility. Advance sales start on Sept. 14th, the pre-advance ticket lotteries on August 16th

also

a poster contest again

Same procedure as every year now: belly touch event in June - "most popular belly" Ura, local bellies Sadanoumi, Hiradoumi and Shodai, and new the most popular foreign born belly Tamawashi

First talk&fun, start at 31:30m: Tamawashi, Hiradoumi, Ura, Shodai, Sadanoumi, in the end a short visit by Asakayama and then the belly touch main part

General sales start Sep. 20th, the basho on Nov. 9th

No posters now in the site, the data are from the Natsu basho

Kyushu PR and sales really start early, and the ticket lotteries for the fanclub members are already about to start, they all go on for 4 days. On the 22nd that for those who pay big, Y/O/S course members, on the 29th that for also makuuchi course members. The one for the general public on sumo.pia starts on Sep. 5th, those 3 with 4 days time to pay for the ticket after the announcement of the lottery results, 2 days after the lotteries close. No time limit at the lottery on ticket.pia starting on Sep.12th, results on the 17th - and on the Sep. 20th, day 7 of the Aki basho, the general sales start - and usually end now. With the new phone authentication, maybe tickets are available a bit longer

https://sumo.pia.jp/sumo11.jsp

I don't know if there are any security checks like this for the group applications, they can buy tickets much earlier, for Kyushu the sales for groups (of 12 or more) started on July 1st, web registration possible https://dantai-sumo.an.r.appspot.com/?name=十一月場所&year=2025

I guess the spammers mainly get their tickets from there, seems to be easy to include anybody in such a group

Today the gomen-fuda for the basho was installed at the venue, chief Kaio with his team did the PR photo

Asakayama/Kaio is happy that the tickets sold out on the day, the last time that happened was 1995, during the Waka-Taka boom, when he was active (sekiwake)

My bro-love for Ura is ever growing. He's such a gentle guy.

Stuff that happened today.:

Takanoshou was tachimochi at the Yokozuna dohyo-iri with Oonosato for the first time. Suddenly he got a hand cramp, the sword started wavering, and he had to hold on to it with both hands, Social media was all over it. "My arm started to cramp and I couldn't do what I wanted. It was frustrating. I didn't realize that it was that heavy.. I shall do my best to do better!" he said. Takayasu usually does that but today he faced the Yokozuna. He will  be tachimochi the whole basho, as he is ranked higher than Takayasu, so he bears the sword while Takayasu will sweep the dew.

The NHK feed was interrupted about half an hour towards the end with breaking news about a 6.3 scale earthquake and never returned to broadcast. Irate fans were irate, some suggesting Sumo should be broadcast on a "sabuchanneru. (yes, I know)"

Ex-Endou showed up for the first time for his Oyakata duties. Headlines in the news. He had his press conference today. He actually talked.  "I still don't feel like I retired."

1:0 to Hiro in yusho predictions vs John Gunning... I have to admit I thought Hiro was overly optimistic regarding Hakuoho but that was a brilliant start.

Great effort by Midorifuji but Kinbozan in the end was too big and strong for him.

I thought Fujinokawa might've been a fraction too early off the line against Roga, but none of the shimpan seemed to notice so a good win for the crowd favourite.

It was still broadcasting on the NHK 4K channel, which we happen to have. So it became my duty to film each bout and send them via Line messenger to my irate Japanese sumo pals.

Anyone in Japan can watch it on the Abema app for free as well! I was scrambling for it myself when the usual hysterical NHK overreaction hit.

His knees no doubt still feel like he's wrestling.

Excellent start to the basho! Not so excellent start to the discussion thread though, where is everyone? (Eh?)

Anyway, Wakatakakage continues his form, or lack of it, from last basho. Oho looked in control right from the tachiai.

Kotozakura lost the bout against Kirishima already at the tachiai, too slow and passive after the first attempt failed. A bit disappointing cause that could've been a great match. Kirishima won't mind though.

Onosato made extra sure not to lose to Hakuoho for a second basho in a row. Tachiai jitters aside, very careful and solid sumo by the yokozuna. He made sure to apply enough power to withstand Hakuoho's charge and managed not to pull so a good win against his in-form opponent.

I don't quite know the protocol on this, but is it too early to complain about the slippiodohyo surface in Kyushu?

Takanosho the quick pusher has been oshidashi'd twice, including a spatula job by Hoshoryu.  I'm not sure his natural home is in San'yaku anymore.

His natural home hasn't been the san'yaku in ages.

In fairness to the guy, though, he's generally much better against Wakamotoharu than either of his first two opponents. If he looks hopeless today, that's a problem.

Honestly, it never was. He hasn't had a sanyaku KK since March 21, and this is only his 2nd opportunity since then.

Oh, I'm lurking around, but I've found myself with bugger all constructive to say, which isn't like me but there you go.

For instance, today I noticed Hiro had more or less copy/pasted his script from London, and Sadanoumi vs Shonannoumi could've been at London for all the apparent effort.

Oh, and seeing Mitakeumi in Moti's 'Blast from the Past' slot made me realise it's exactly 10 years since I rediscovered sumo. I probably watched that one on Jason's All-Sumo Channel back then.

Asanoyama looks washed. Once thing I don't understand about his career arc. When he got suspended for a year as a 26-year old Ozeki, I figured he could fully heal and get in all the gym and practice time he wants to build a really strong frame. Instead, he came back much more injury-prone than he was pre-suspension.

After 2 kinboshi in a row to Hakuoho, I was sure he won't lose a 3rd to him
