Now I'm even less sure if this "top 4 round robin" theory holds any water, or if Daieisho isn't treated any differently than his fellow Sekiwake.

The top 4 round robin was a very definite thing for a long time. This torikumi group seems to have moved away from that, at least with only 3 Y/O.

I guess that's the point. "Top 4" might have never been extended to Sekiwake (unless dictated by too many kyujo), and it's only recently that it became apparent.

I remember it being applied to the top Sekiwake in the #4 slot before.

Since I got into the game when the banzuke sometimes had four Y/O and sometimes not, I noticed that they seemed to more easily break the round robin when there were less than four, but there were so many injuries and poor performances that could have impacted things that I could only treat it as correlation, not causation. The last time the top four who started also got to the end, Kyushu 2024, they clearly planned for the round robin and only broke one matchup due to Kirishima's collapse. But this time it looks like having three Y/O and two strong sekiwake made them feel like they had more flexibility. (I have a feeling, though, that if Kotozakura was popping off and not falling to the end of the line in that top five, they would have saved Onosato/Kotozakura for the normal day 14.)

Oh, FWIW, although competitively they made the right decision breaking Hoshoryu/Takayasu and creating the schedule they did, I'm also somewhat surprised they didn't make Takayasu eat shit until he officially had eight losses.

Anyway.

I am surprised they decided to give Hoshoryu another chance to activate his kinboshi dispenser. (Sigh...)
