Quality basho for Tamawashi. Ya love to see it.

Absolutely, that guy is amazing. Double digits at his age in upper Makuuchi is nothing to sneeze at. Huge respect for the veteran!

Kirishima is totally out of steam. Wakatakakage got his 10th to continue on his ozeki quest.

Kotokaze boasted ("I won't boast of it") of having been promoted with 30 wins, as there were no ozeki (3Y), thinking that Wakatakakage might be promoted with simple double digits after next basho (32 wins)

11 wins for Onosato as Akinomaki predicted. Kotozakura did a few decent body hits for good measure but then was escorted out.

Kotoshoho's father looks like the stereotypical wise master from a martial arts movie, white beard and all.

He's actually an amateur bodybuilder.

11 wins and jun-yusho for Onosato. I'm pleased that a good deal of my prediction was spot on (not the jun-yusho though)

I want Aonishiki to get double kinboshi, jun-yusho and triple sansho next basho as compensation for being rank robbed

runner-up Hoshoryu - Onosato will be back to his real self, but on yokozuna level, so not 9-6, but 11-4. Kirishima and Wakatakakage double digits and getting into gear for ozeki return/promotion, Daieisho no return and drop like the 2 fresh promoted komusubi. Aonishiki and Onokatsu heading for sanyaku promotion.

Kotoeiho makekoshi (injured elbow), Kusano sansho

About 2/3 of it was correct

All 3 makuuchi basho of Aonishiki with 11-4 and sansho, 2 more of that and he's ozeki

A few interviews:

Kotoshoho's interview was pretty short, but he's obviously overwhelmed by the occasion and went on autopilot but did well.

Haven't realised the yusho yet but happy. Tried to do my best today.

After tachiai I didn't think and let my body move, which it did well.

Started thinking about the yusho 2 days ago.

What went well with your sumo? Managed to do my own sumo every day.

Want to repay with the yusho to everyone who has supported me.

When asked about winning in front of his parents, wife and son - - Didn't know where they were in the audience but hopefully I showed my good side to them.

Did feel support from his brother during the basho.

Wanna go for sanyaku and above and keep doing sumo worthy of support.

Aonishiki (whose Japanese is very good as others have said)

Feel happy about winning sansho (though not with a very happy face). Won the sansho with my own brand of sumo so that was good.

Did try to attack but body didn't follow. 15 days was quite full of nervousness.

My sumo life is from now on. Want to win a yusho next time.

Kusano:

Feel happy about the sansho. Good that I was part of yusho arasoi until the last day.

Learned about pressure and how to respond to it. Good experience.

Wanna go forward in maegashira, improve my tachiai etc.

Kind of anti-climatic but congratulations to Kotoshoho! I hope that 13-2 will get him to the joi next tournament. I am also hoping the injuries are finally healed and this will be the start of something good. Now is the time at 25 to make his move. We will see in two months.

Tamawashi with 11 wins, a jun-yusho and a kinboshi! Love the guy!

Onosato should be back on form next tournament. Is anyone up to the challenge?

Hoshoryu - will the yokozuna please show up!

Aonishiki "should" be in sanyaku next time barring some even worse "banzuke luck". After the last banzuke, I will believe it when I see it. Can he get double digit wins in two months? Takayasu stays at Komusubi with a 6-9?!?!

Kusano is looking good. Double digit wins and he will be facing all of the joi.

I haven't given up on Takerufuji but the injuries just keep coming.

Hakuoho with an 8-7 at his highest rank should get him a slight promotion. He did get a kinboshi as a consolation prize.

Fujinokawa is on the small side but has been impressive. Will he hit the wall next time?

Anyway, only two months until the next tournament. (Firstprize...)

I see you haven't heard about the special maegashira 0 rank created especially for Aonishiki ;-)

Congratulations to Kotoshoho. 13-2 - wow! Bit of an easy win over Aonishiki as it turned out, but that tells me Kotoshoho didn't let the pressure get to him, which is kind of impressive.

This one is going in the mental file with Tokushoryu's and Takerufuji's, though. I would love for it to be a real step forward for Kotoshoho, but it's a blip until proven otherwise.

Congratulations also to @Akinomaki on the prediction of Onosato's result. 11-4 is a two-win improvement on his former post-yusho results, too.

And congratulations to Tamawashi, who as Murray Walker Johnson pointed out does indeed have an international fan base. 11-4, a kinboshi and a shukun-sho at 40 years old is awesome.

Commiserations, I suppose, to Aonishiki and Kusano, but it's very hard to feel sorry for them when it's bleeding obvious they are going to figure very largely in future yusho races. No, I reserve most of my sympathy for Takayasu (and his delulu fans), who's going to watch these guys pass him and get the yusho he won't get.

The big question:

Next tournament will “Mr. Banzuke luck” Shimanoumi be ranked at Juryo 14w with a 3-12 record at J12e? (Whistling...)

They just announced, to balance Aonishiki’s promotion to maegashira 0, Shimanoumi gets juryo 20 next basho

Hey, we're living in a world where literally any rikishi is capable of winning a yusho...

I keep doing that!

Murray Johnson does sumo: the late Murray Walker used to do F1.

This was a real "under the radar" yusho. When an M15 starts off 3-2 you can safely cross him off any list of contenders. Kotoshoho went on a winning run thereafter but if this one was going to be taken by a maegashira wrestler, that wrestler was going to be Aonishiki, or Kusano, or Ichiyamamoto. KSH did not even appear on the "spirited rikishi" lists until day 13.

Well done to him. When he first broke through I was convinced that he was a better prospect than his stablemate Kotonowaka (Kotozakura) as he was younger, faster and had better technical skills. Injuries have held him up but he is still young and his best days should be ahead of him. I think that if he had stayed healthy he would have been established at the top end of the maegashira ranks.

Been a very fun basho to watch. Been impressed by how Fujinokawa survived a rough first few bouts where he took some nasty spills into a very respectable score. Aonishiki was very good and I look forward to seeing him climb.

It will be interesting to see how Onosato adapts after this basho now a few people seem to have his number. My main wish is I want to see Yokozuna Hoshoyru healthy for once!

I've been away for a few days and just caught up now. Frankly I'm amazed at how things turned out! I thought it was Aonishiki's on a plate.

Kotoshoho looked a good prospect early on but I thought his main problem was balance rather than injury. He looked ungainly and his legs often just seemed to get away from him. Great to see him overcome this so spectacularly (also looks like he's bulked up a bit lately).

He has pulled out of at least one basho injured in each of the last five calendar years. He has busted his knee, ankle and big toe so it's not surprising that he has looked a bit unsteady on his pins at times. He also injured his bicep in training earlier. this year. These aren't the kind of injuries that wreck careers, but they can certainly slow your progress.
