There exists a mistaken belief that Onosato lacks some sort of skill that is important to being good at sumo.

In reality the only skill that matters in sumo is being big and strong and mobile. Everything else is just tricks and tricks are for kids.

Onosato is not Hakuho, but could be a more successful Yokozuna than Kise (for sure), Harumafuji, and Kakuryu.  He could be a dominant force going forward, more so than Hoshoryu could.

Is Aonishiki real?  He was 1-5 against Sanyuku before this basho.  He completely turned that around by going 5-2 against the lot.  That is freaking impressive.  If the others can't crack Ao's sumo style, he'd be an Ozeki in no time.

Wrong comparison: 5-5-5 with 3 kinboshi better than 10-4 with 4

If only Onosato withdrew after 9 bouts as well, then he'd have given away just 2 (Laughing...)

Not on the official site yes, but apparently the special prizes are as follows:

Aonishiki *If they win the championship (1st)
Kusano *If they win the championship (1st)
Kotoshoho *If they win the championship (1st)

Fighting Spirit Award
Kusano (1st)
Kotoshoho (2nd)
Fujinokawa *If they win today (1st)

Technique Award
Aonishiki (1st)
Kusano (1st)

So if this is correct and Fujinokawa wins, we'd have 7, which would tie the record from a couple of years ago. Otherwise, 6 would still be second-most all-time.

A bit surprising for me that Kusano is locked in for two...

Edit: Aonishiki only got the Kantosho in his 11-4 debut, so they should have made the Ginosho conditional.

One can't help noticing the difference between Japanese and foreign. But with this even more unusually generous supply of sansho than at the last sansho flood, that fits.

Looks like the NSK has plenty of extra cash now from the kensho flood, since they increased their part of it to 10000 yen. (They only pay for and not decide on the sansho, though they have some top shimpan there to vote)

For my own education, is the kensho really such a big part of Kyokai revenue? 2000+ kensho per basho these days equals 2 million yen additional revenue since the Kyokai share increase, so roughly 16 million yen per year. A decent chunk of money for sure, but that's about one maegashira rikishi's yearly pay, isn't it? Or maybe it's enough to give out a few more special prizes. And aren't they supposed to keep the kensho to return to the rikishi at retirement? Though they might make use of the liquidity in the meantime. Anyway, just curious.

A very small part, but some extra cash to finance some extra sansho. They also now keep 50 000 yen of the rikishi's kensho money for later, so they can get a few more yen from investing the money till then.

Pardon my ignorance, but does the Kyokai even have a say in the sansho? I thought they were decided by a board of journalists.

Mita juryo yusho! Caught his interview halfway and didn't get much info except he'll gambarize even more.

Edit: saw a bit more and he said he's happy to finish a basho without injuries, and has worked on his lower body more, allowing him to push better.

The top shimpan are part of the sansho committee and can influence the discussion - I haven't seen a comment anywhere that they aren't allowed to vote, so I guess they do

Fujinokawa got his sansho with a spirited resistance to Ichiyamamoto, ending the bout with a pulldown. Happy to see him get recognition for a good basho.

Edit: in the interview he said it was one of his dreams to get a sansho, surpassing his father's achievements.

Ichi still has much to learn. From 9-1 yusho contender to 9-6 as soon as he had to fight above M5. Hard Realitätsschelle (b***hslapped by reality).

Oho had a decent end to the basho, getting his 7th win by keeping Hakuoho from getting close with strong two-handed pushes. Makekoshi is still makekoshi but he did well to limit the damage to his rank.

Kotoshoho yusho! Easy pulldown as Aonishiki seemed nervous. Well executed plan.

Parents in the house and his brother Kotoeiho also won today so good omens perhaps.

Nothing in it any more for Kusano, so no power - Takayasu had double digits as a big motivation

Tamawashi jun-yusho! Only one of likely 5 jun-yusho (Onosato still has to take his last win) for Aonishiki, Purin (pudding) joined there as well

Tamawashi got his 11th win, amazing result for the veteran. Though Oshoma is entirely useless if he can't pull.
