Maybe he's got terrible body odour and everyone wants to get away from him as fast as possible? :-D

I'm willing to bet that they all have that issue given what they do.

You never know, Ura might smell like roses in his pink mawashi.

They all smell of binzuke abura - the distinctive hairwax odor of a sumotori

This is way off topic, but I'm going to let you all into a secret. We all perspire and we all smell, but only a very small minority smell unpleasant. I know this because I was a coal miner; i.e. working in a hot, confined airflow with a lot of men. There were even men who would ask to work in the tail gate (downwind end of the face) because they knew they stank.
It's not really a matter of cleanliness, either. We all got thoroughly scrubbed in the showers at the end of every shift, but I knew one poor bugger who started to pong again before he even got dried...
Anyway, the secret is: antiperspirants are stupid because we have evolved to perspire, and most of us don't need deodorants, either.

I've head that the mawashi aren't/can't be washed, so I doubt he or it smells like fresh roses.

Great move from Hoshoryu to shut down Wakamotoharu's utchari attempt. If the top two continue like this (I'm sure they won't) then that 14-0 match up could happen!

Also, Endo is on fire! Great to see this after what seems like years of lacklustre sumo.

Well, I think it's safe to say that we'd be spared a heart-wrenching drama like last basho (at least not by the same you know who).

A bit surprised to see the enormous Oonosato resorting to a pull against the old man. Perhaps he isn't feeling his best?

Nah, it looked to me that he planned this move right from the start. I wouldn't call it "pull", rather decisive push-down.

I have no idea why he planned it, though. Nor do I have a comment on how he feels.

Something I absolutely did not expect to happen two days in: Shonannoumi is 0-2, but I don't think he's fighting badly at all.

GEEZ MAN! You cannot say that part out loud. I'm honestly surprised the forum hasn't added that phrase to the banned list.

Anyway, I think I'll cheer on Wakatakakage this time around!

Props to the yokozuna for keeping the niramiai tradition alive. Save Hakuoho, I can't see any of the other rikishi being into it.

Anyone understand the reversal in the Asogyokusei vs. Ryusei makushita bout? Asagyokusei was in the air and upside down when Ryusei touched...

Fighting at Komusubi, it was unlikely to happen this time around.

Onosato to win 14-1 (loss to my guy Kotozakura) and get the white rope.

Hoshoryu to go 14-1 (loss to Onostato) and dominate many.

My guy Kotozakura to go 14-1 (because he already has a loss).

Mei Sei with 10 wins and a move up to the top of Maegashira.

Kusano to get to top division with a solid 10+ wins.

Takerufuji to wreck some shit, double digits.

All my Tatsunami guys to have kachi kochi, with Okaryu going 7-0 and starting a trend where no one ever wears shirts.

Hello everybody! Unfortunately, I failed to show up after the first days of commentary here. I try to make it up with today.

Starting from the lower Makuuchi, Nishikigi looks in a good shape this basho. 3-0 and looking solid. He's at his lowest rank since Haru 2022, so he's posed for a nice basho if he keeps this pace. Another guy who is growing up just nice is Tokihayate. He's much following up to his 10-5 last basho. I wouldn't bet a single penny on him as recently as this Hatsu.

Going up, I have little to say about single wrestlers, but I could enjoy a few very entertaining bouts. Day 3 had good match-ups in Meisei vs. Kinbozan (great resilience from Meisei), Onokatsu vs. Aonishiki, and Hakuoho vs. Chiyoshoma (the Reiwa Monster keeps looking good after his long slump).

Now, let's talk about the top guns. Kirishima won while looking good against an in-shape Tamawashi. I expect a good basho from Kirby. Kotozakura does not look good instead - he's still nowhere the shape he was last Kyushu. WTK took advantage of his lack of initiative and kept trying until KZK finally went out. Onosato still looks a bit uneasy when his throat is targeted, but this time he managed to break the choke hold and shoved Abi out decisively. He looks really good, I wouldn't have thought he could after his abysmal YDC Soken. And - Oho took the spotlight today. Great win against an aggressive Hoshoryu. The Yokozuna failed to get a belt grip and ultimately lost the oshi match. Oho is now 3-0 and might represent this basho's grand dark horse.

Tomorrow we get Onosato vs. Oho, likely an early smell test for both men. Both are 3-0 with today and look in great shape. Funnily enough, Oho won their last two match-ups, although their overall score is 2-3 for Onosato. On a last line, Takerufuji keeps running over his opponents. He failed to impress in the last few basho because he lost some focus eventually, but I can't help but keeping an eye on the Truck.

And down goes the Yokozuna. How many more losses can he absorb before another kyujo?

I wouldn't call it a worrisome loss this time around. Oho is just doing good this basho. I would wait before calling Hoshoryu cooked. Aside from that, I hope he finishes the tournament this time around. He cannot go on withdrawing every time he's not having an ideal basho, it could be worse for his mentality than handing out kinboshi. He has always been a solid KK machine, he must now learn how to handle Maegashira guys regularly through a trial-and-error system.

Yeah, you can't hold just one loss to Oho against the yokozuna.

Oho is a proven danger in the joi now. I'm almost glad he lost his sanyaku berth, just so he could benefit from the kinboshi. That was a very well-earned permanent pay rise.

Disappointing lack of purple rain, though.

I am rooting for Onosato to win the basho so he doesn't back into the rope like Hoshoryu did.
