Akoushousan 8 Posted November 23, 2024 Does anyone have the info on who's promised a special prize at what condition tomorrow?

He's still got to build on his mental fortitude, as exemplified by his loss to an inferior Hakuyozan after the latter pulled some shenanigans at the tachiai, but doing very good sumo and taking convincing wins. Last time I watched his bouts his wins came mostly from slapdowns while back pedalling, it's good to hear he's found a way to win with better sumo at a higher level. He also looks like he's bulked up a bit which must help.

With the ozeki dominating the race and no newcomers in double digits, it might be a thin prize haul. We did see none given at Aki 2018, and only one at Aki 2023 (as well as on a number of previous occasions).

That's something we can make predictions about. Abi definitely gets a sansho, if Hoshoryu wins he'd be the only eligible for the shukun-sho, so they'll likely give it to him unconditionally. The newcomers failed miserable, so no kantosho there, Takanosho was in the lead for quite a while, he should get a kantosho, also without a win to reach 11. Ginosho maybe none, maybe Wakatakakage. Jakusotsu 6,052 Posted November 23, 2024 Would be nice for Tamawashi to get a kantosho for the presumably oldest kachi-koshi in Makuuchi, but I doubt it. Especially since he's eager to get many more.

Octofuji 369 Posted November 23, 2024 There were a couple of dubious calls in Makuuchi today: Takerufuji v Ichiyamamoto (wrong winner) , and Shodai v Churanoumi (wrong kimarite). As I understand it, if a mono-ii isn't called then that's that, the result can't be changed, which makes sense (no-one would wish the horrors of football VAR onto sumo). But I think they can and do change the kimarite if it's clearly wrong. Churanoumi pulled on Shodai's belt, it wasn't self-inflicted and they should have changed it to something other than koshikudake. Having seen so many true slippiotoshi labelled as tsukiotoshi or hikiotoshi I was surprised this one stuck.

I counted 3 occasions where the bout was wrongly called, or it should have been matta, during the basho. Beginning with the Abi-Hoshoryu bout. Its a shame when a bout is 'taken away' from a rikishi, especially if it impacts the yusho race. There should be repercussions on the shimpan + the gyoji for not noticing a 'mistake'. Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted November 23, 2024 Has just felt like Hoshoryu's basho all along, as his sumo has been impeccable, but I would be happy to see Kotozakura earn his first yusho and have a chance at the rope in January.

Being in the lead the first week doesn't count much, same for double digits in the second basho. Rather Gonoyama could get one with a win.

Gurowake 4,109 Posted November 24, 2024 (edited) My predictions: Shukun-Sho: Abi Kanto-sho: Takanosho unconditionally, plus Gonoyama if he wins Gino-sho: Wakatakakage if he wins Edited November 24, 2024 by Gurowake

They could make Takanosho's conditional. I guess others in the conversation could be Wakamotoharu if he wins, but he mainly feasted on lower-ranked opponents, or Onokatsu if he wins, but it's his second makuuchi basho... Wakawakawaka 161 Posted November 24, 2024 Still, if Hoshoryu wins tomorrow, his only loss will have been to the Gyoji. Will the Gyoji get an outstanding performance award for beating the yusho winner?
