That surprises me given the fact that on Nov 18, he was reported to have contracted Covid. Six days later, he's in the studio! (OK, he's wearing a mask, but when Hokuseiho got Covid, he and the rest of the stable – infected or not – were banned from participating in the whole September Tournament as per NSK's guidelines). I call foul! That is a double standard IMHO. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/8f6f8e22a0ffba0bdf820542bb14236f17e72273 If you are talking about that Nikkan Sports article, I think he was just interviewed on the backlog of danpatsushiki caused by COVID-19. The article makes no mention of he himself being infected.
Benevolance 2,511 Posted November 24, 2021 Inside scoop is that he faked an illness to avoid shimpan duties so that Shohozan couldn't tackle him on the sidelines. 1
WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted November 24, 2021 I thought Ichinojo was going to job for Terunofuji there but glad to see he actually took the fight to him today

Thorbjarn 215 Posted November 24, 2021 Terunofuji vs Ichinojo was fun to watch. Terunofuji may well be on road for a Zensho Yusho, he looks unbeatable. Abi gets the next eliminator, but then he will be facing the Sanyaku I assume.

Still notable that so many have the exact same record. This isn’t the first basho with a healthy sanyaku in all of sumo history! A quick db query shows this is only the sixth time, and first in more than five years, that seven guys in the ranks Sekiwake through to M5 have 4-7 after 11 days, so this is an unusually high number. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&group_by=basho&day=11&m=on&rank1=S-M5&wins1=4 Edited November 24, 2021 by Eikokurai
Benevolance 2,511 Posted November 24, 2021 (edited) If Takakeisho and Terunofuji end up in another playoff, that'll be kinda awesome. Edit: Like, it's already happened several times. And if it becomes their 'thing' I'd be totally okay with that. Edited November 24, 2021 by Benevolance

Amamaniac 2,079 Posted November 24, 2021 So after 11 days of sumo, there are only two wrestlers left in the Makushita Division with perfect records: Chiyonoumi Ms33e and Ryuden Ms47w Bit of a gap in the rankings (not too big, mind), but I would definitely not be surprised if the torikumi team pits these two in their final regulation bout of the tournament, thereby avoiding all need for a playoff in that division. And if these two do end up going head-to-head, the odds-on favourite has to be Ryuden!

I don't see how your words are meant to imply that it's small rather than large. Chiyonoumi is ranked really low for the highest ranked 6-0 in Ms. Edited November 25, 2021 by Gurowake

Treblemaker 254 Posted November 25, 2021 Had a chuckle when Wakatakakage's henka made the bout shorter than the time it actually takes to pronounce his name. Also, was good to see ex-Takamisakari clicking his stopwatch today.

WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted November 25, 2021 Given that Shodai will not face one of them, we are obviously headed towards Terunofuji vs Takakeisho for the musubi-no-ichiban on senshuraku

Amamaniac 2,079 Posted November 25, 2021 (edited) Well it's official: M15w Abi is going to face Ozeki Takakeisho on tomorrow day 13. Do I dare say that that is a pretty huge gap in the Top Division? Makujiri-adjacent vs second highest ranker. Both men have 10-1 records prior to their day 12 bouts. It's what I would describe as a culling... Taliesin, you beat me to the punch! Akinomaki 40,802 Posted November 25, 2021 Asashoryu with wife were still amused watching the nephew lose, but maybe he'll bash him later. The celebration Ura did after his win would have caused a scandal if Hakuho had done it.

That bout decision was somewhat questionable IMHO. It looked to me that Hoshoryu expected a monoii, but none was forthcoming. Not sure if it was a time thing, sympathy for Daieisho being on the edge of a makekoshi, or the judges felt like snubbing Asashoryu. At the end of the day, the judges must have been confident that Hoshoryu was out before Daieisho. My question is: how was that oshitaoshi, if Hoshoryu stayed on his feet?!!!
