Inspired by the Endless Romanisation thread some time ago, @Asojima and I bring to you: The Shikona Translations & Trivia Megathread! Originally this thread contained a list of sekitori shikona. Each shikona is followed by a spoiler tag, which contains the following information pertaining to the shikona: Spoiler Full shikona: This is the full shikona in kanji, including the given name, in the order of shikona surname - given name, and with a space in between. Decomposed romaji: This is the romaji that corresponds with the full shikona, with hyphen breaks matching up to different characters. Heya: Self explanatory. This helps with making a connection to kanji characters that heyamates share. Shikona meaning (formal equivalence): This is a very mechanistic, quick translation of the shikona surname. Full shikona meaning (dynamic equivalence): This is a looser, but hopefully more flavourful, translation of the full shikona, including the given name. Trivia (WIP): This can include notes on the origin of the shikona, interesting factoids connected with the shikona, or other shikona-related matters. Translation notes: These are comments on some interesting translations which appear unusual and play even looser with the formal translation of the shikona. I have also realised that I've left in comments to myself in there while doing the translations, so they're interesting tidbits which may give some insight into the translation process. However, after the initial postings, various facts of shikona lore (and the relative insignificance of the translations) became apparent. We are therefore updating the original data sets to better show how sekitori shikona are formed from heya traditions, hometown allusions, and personal references; a project that we expect to take some time. In the meantime, the original lists are archived at the following link within the thread. The new format, split into three blocks, is as follows. The more salient parts are the first and second bits, which actually relate to the shikona's formation; the translations have been relegated to the third part as an archive of work done and a rough idea of the meaning of the kanji, although as noted below they do not necessarily denote what the shikona means to the rikishi. Spoiler Real name: This contains the real name of the rikishi, in Japanese characters and then Latin characters. Full final shikona: This is the full most recent shikona in kanji, including the given name, in the order of shikona surname - given name, and with a space in between. Heya: Shusshin: In some cases, the shikona influences will be obvious from the shusshin. Shikona history: This section records the shikona history of the rikishi, with the basho the shikona was adopted, the kanji, and the romaji of the shikona. Shikona facts: Notes about the shikona, including how it came to be. This compiles information primarily from jp.wikipedia, but if you know of more information that has been archived on SF do let us know. Shikona meaning (formal equivalence): This is a very mechanistic, quick translation of the shikona surname. This overhaul also introduces two changes: annotations and traditional Hepburn romaji. As this is a fair amount of visual clutter, the annotations will be confined to the Shikona History section of each rikishi's entry, while traditional Hepburn romaji will be included for the rikishi's real name and full shikona at the top of the entry if applicable. Annotations follow in the following form: * (asterisk): Denotes a heya component of a shikona. ^ (carat): Denotes a geographical component of a shikona. ' (apostrophe): Denotes a personal component of a shikona (whether a reference to the rikishi's real name or other reference to events in their life). Parentheses group together separate kanji in a shikona that belong to the same component. For instance, one might see an annotation thus: Koto*-(te-bakari)'. This indicates that there are three kanji in the shikona, that the "koto" element is a heya component, and the two kanji for "tebakari" together are derived from a personal reference. As for romaji, the romanisation system used primarily in this thread is modern Hepburn (the type generally used across Japan today). However, in deference to Kintamayama-san, where the traditional Hepburn romanisation of the shikona differs from the modern Hepburn (e.g. when it contains a long vowel), the traditional Hepburn romanisation will follow after the modern Hepburn, separated by a slash, and substituting full spellings for macrons (because they're a pain in the ass to type on the forum). General notes on translation: The translation of the shikona is to a certain extent divorced from the meaning of the shikona to the individual rikishi. An example would be Asashoryu's given name portion of his shikona, Akinori, which can be translated as Brilliant Virtue, but its connection to Asashoryu himself stems more from the same kanji being the name of his high school, Meitoku (an alternate reading of Akinori) Gijuku High School. With a lot of shikona having connections either to the rikishi's heya and/or the rikishi's hometown, the closest Western equivalent I can think of would be the process by which Lenin's nom de guerre was inspired by the river Lena, with much more abstract connotations, rather than directly meaning anything in and of itself. It doesn't help that translating Chinese/Japanese to English is confounded with several issues, a little like with hieroglyphs: Kanji can be used both for their sound value and their meaning value. These two don't necessarily coincide. For instance, Baruto's shikona consists of kanji that are almost certainly entirely used for their sound value, whereas the kanji in shikona like Futeno are used primarily for its meaning value. Very few shikona are aptronyms in both meaning and sound, and this tends to be more for foreign rikishi like Sentoryu and Osunaarashi. In a particularly devilish twist of Japanese, kanji can actually be explicitly assigned a non-standard sound value essentially for stylistic purposes. The shikona Hayateumi is an example: standard pronunciation would have it pronounced something like Oiteumi (as it shares characters with Oitekaze stable), but it's instead pronounced as the word for "hurricane/gale" in Japanese, which has a different set of kanji altogether. More famously, Hokutoumi also changed the standard pronunciation of the kanji for "win" (usually "sho"/"katsu") to "to" as a means of including the name of his hometown in totality (the first half as sound, the second half as kanji). In a more codified form, some kanji when paired together may also take standardised but non-obvious meanings that are metaphorical or allusions: the -asuka portion of Tamaasuka is an example. The -asuka portion is written with characters that mean "flying bird" and could be pronounced "hitori", but the kanji are codified as being pronounced as "asuka" in a practice dating from the eponymous Asuka period in Japanese history. So the translations are for the most part fan-generated trivia in and of themselves - interesting pieces of information given some relevance only because we are mostly external to the Japanese context in which they occur and hence have another cultural base to refer to. I know there have been a couple of shikona-oriented threads in the past in this subforum, but having glanced through them quickly I think we are very justified in saying that this list of 300 or so (including older rikishi) is the most extensive yet. Also, if there are any sekitori shikona that you would like a translation for but which isn't in the list, do drop a reply and I'll try to get to it. No promises as to when, though. (Toriteki shikona are preferably avoided because a lot more actual Japanese family names tend to be in there, which makes it a lot less meaningful.) Taikai changed his shikona to Kiryuyama in mid-1989, before Akebono's younger brother (considered the more promising of the two) entered sumo under the shikona Taikai himself in 1990 but quit after only 2 basho. The shikona Akebono had previously been used in Osaka sumo, by a shin-nyumaku wrestler in 1924 under the full shikona Akebono Gentaro (ss. Nagasaki, h. Tokitsukaze, hr. M8). ja.wikpedia seems to contain a confusion as to his real name, listing it as Chad George Haheo Rowan (cf en.wikipedia which lists his real name as Chadwick Haheo Rowan, with the "-wick" suffix apparently omitted from the DB listing of his real name). However, the DB lists his younger brother as Rowan George instead, so there is at the very least some contradiction as to whether "George" is a component of his name or not. It is unclear whether "shima" is taken from Hiroshima, although "shima" is a sufficiently common "generic" component of shikona that it is impossible to say either way at present. Originally fighting under his real name of Yamanaka Katsumi, he assumed the Akinoshima shikona shortly before his promotion to juryo. However, he twiddled with it after a run of relatively poor results that saw him drop from komusubi to maegashira 14, changing the "no" character from katakana to kanji (cf. the "no" in Terunofuji vs Takanohana), and adding a stroke to the last kanji. He removed the stroke from that last kanji one basho later, but kept the changed writing of "no". He made another change to his shikona after his final fall to juryo, changing the "no" from the katakana to the kanji. Finally, he changed the given name component of his shikona to his own given name, after his hospitalisation for a heart ailment in May 2000 which ended his career. The first kanji for "bright" was taken from his parents' names, the second kanji from Kise stable, and the last kanji was a homage to a coach of his from his Saitama Sakae sumo club days, Yamada. Akiseyama's family runs a construction business "Fukao Tile", and the above explanation of his shikona apparently can be found on the business' webpage. Although his shikona in English apparently contains the full name of his stable (Akiseyama), the split of the characters above show this is not the case. Kise-beya's name is formed of two characters as a contraction from Kimura Sebei, the gyoji-kabu that lent its name to the modern kabu, and it is only the "se" character that is included in Akiseyama's shikona; that the first kanji has a "ki" element in it is a coincidence. In 2014, he decided to change his shikona to Akua, commenting that "there are waves in my grades, so I want to get rid of the waves" - this was a reference to the "nami" character in his shikona, which is the same "nami" as in Tatsunami. The pronunciation of the shikona Akua was inspired by Aquaworld Oarai, an aquarium situated in his hometown. The original characters as thought up by Tatsunami oyakata were meant to be "阿久亜" (meaning something like "So long, Asia", cf. Gaia, another Tatsunami rikishi with a non-Japanese-sounding shikona), but the kanji were changed to the current rendering. The first character, meaning "sky" or "heavens", symbolises the wish to rise up the banzuke, whereas the second and third characters for "sky/void" and "sea" are meant to represent his hometown of Oarai (Oarai used to house Oarai Port before its consolidation with the ports of Hitachi and Hitachinaka to form the Port of Ibaraki in 2008). This makes this shikona an interesting case of multiple references. Oguruma oyakata originally intended to give him the shikona of Tokikaze (Dawn Wind), but Amakaze requested to have his present shikona instead, after a river that flowed near his hometown that was called the Heavenly River (the Japanese equivalent of the Milky Way). His birthday is also on Tanabata, 7 July, which is closely linked to the Milky Way, as the story goes that the Milky Way separated two lovers (represented by the stars Altair and Vega) who were only allowed to meet once every year on Tanabata. In addition, the use of the kanji for "heaven" also represents an aspiration to aim upwards (on the banzuke), and also forms a homophonic pun on "ama" (meaning sweet). So arguably the personally-distinctive aspect of Amakaze's shikona is both a geographic as well as a personal reference. Translation notes: These are comments on some interesting translations which appear unusual and play even looser with the formal translation of the shikona. I have also realised that I've left in comments to myself in there while doing the translations, so they're interesting tidbits which may give some insight into the translation process. It's worth noting from the outset that the translation of the shikona is to a certain extent divorced from the meaning of the shikona to the individual rikishi. An example would be Asashoryu's given name portion of his shikona, Akinori, which can be translated as Brilliant Virtue, but its connection to Asashoryu himself stems more from the same kanji being the name of his high school, Meitoku (an alternate reading of Akinori) Gijuku High School. It doesn't help that translating Chinese/Japanese to English is confounded with several issues, a little like with hieroglyphs: Kanji can be used both for their sound value and their meaning value. These two don't necessarily coincide. For instance, Baruto's shikona consists of kanji that are almost certainly entirely used for their sound value, whereas the kanji in shikona like Futeno are used primarily for its meaning value. In a particularly devilish twist of Japanese, kanji can actually be explicitly assigned a non-standard sound value essentially for stylistic purposes. The shikona Hayateumi is an example: standard pronunciation would have it pronounced something like Oiteumi (as it shares characters with Oitekaze stable), but it's instead pronounced as the word for "hurricane/gale" in Japanese, which has a different set of kanji altogether. In a more codified form, some kanji when paired together may also take standardised but non-obvious meanings that are metaphorical or allusions: the -asuka portion of Tamaasuka is an example. The -asuka portion is written with characters that mean "flying bird" and could be pronounced "hitori", but the kanji are codified as being pronounced as "asuka" in a practice dating from the eponymous Asuka period in Japanese history. So the translations are for the most part fan-generated trivia in and of themselves - interesting pieces of information given some relevance only because we are mostly external to the Japanese context in which they occur and hence have another cultural base to refer to. Also, while some shikona entries contain information on the shikona origins, we have not yet gone and extensively canvassed SF archives and JP wikipedia pages for the reason why the shikona were given (it would be a full-on archival/research process, which is a) much longer and b) less fun than translations). But provision has been made for such reasons to be recorded as well just in case it's thought convenient to also have this information consolidated in English in one place on the web. I'll take the point on Amuru as supposed to be A-muu-ru if you were to incorporate the long vowel, although for consistency and clarity I might revise this in the next pass/add another line for what is technically two different representations of the shikona. One is a direct faithful reproduction of the furigana in Japanese, and one is more in line with some English renderings of the shikona that omit the long vowels, so the two probably shouldn't be mixed. But Tokitsuumi looks right to me? There's only 3 characters in Tokitsuumi and I'm fairly certain the first character for "time/hour" is read as Toki? I was under the impression that Amu-u-ru was the correct way, but it seems I was wrong. It's just pronounced that way. I suppose you probably locked down the list a while ago, which is why Kotokuzan doesn't get an entry despite being currently a sekitori for another few weeks. Not all entries have trivia (in fact most of them don't; I'd like to add to it but that's a distant priority), but it's easier to do a bunch of shikona when you're working off Excel rather than in this entry-by-entry fashion. And if I can discover a means to automatically embed DB links for the sekitori via manual tag input (or if someone already knows), then updates will potentially become even easier, although most of the work was initially done by hand. It is possible to significantly automate some of the work involved and output it in a reasonable format, but that is in and of itself a fair amount of work that I can't yet commit to before the end of the year. If I do update it, my first order of business will be reflecting both Modified and Traditional Hepburn in the decomposed romaji (i.e. Kintamayama's pet bugbear), as that is an interesting but ultimately definable and trivial problem to fix. The base sekitori lists were provided by Asojima, and this had been stewing since before Nagoya. Much of the work was done then too, but we decided to wait till after the Nagoya basho to release it to sort of counter some of the in-between basho ennui. I wonder how the two wound up with the same Kai- prefix since one fought out of Tomozuna and apparently adopted the shikona independently, while the other fought out of the Wakanohana I-iteration of Hanakago. The characters for Fu-Ji were used for its name because they sounded like the existing name. The 富士 used in some of the shikona could, in fact, be a reference to Mt. This phenomenon is known as ateji, and can also be seen in the kanji for sushi and kabuki, amongst other things. The other time this also commonly happens is with old provincial names like Dewa, Higo, and Musashi which don't necessarily bear any relation to the meaning of the assigned kanji. Rikishi like Baruto and Sentoryu have a similar thing going on with their shikona. Fairly early on, we made the decision to deal with these on a kanji by kanji basis just to make the job easier. Asojima 2,874 Posted August 13, 2021 (edited) Maru (丸) is kind of interesting. The Chinese view it as a ball. The Japanese view it as round or rotund. They also use it as a suffix for ship names and military hardware. Its use in shikona could denote a person who is round and rotund (Chiyomaru ) , a monstrous object in motion or a major weapon.
