Shikona Megathread: Translations and Trivia

Thanks very much for the supplemental information and the myoseki list. I don't yet have the time to go through them in detail but a lot of the supplemental information is what I've also found/read elsewhere, and also a number of the translation "issues" were precisely why Asojima and I decided to rework the lists to focus more on shikona origins rather than "translations" per se.

Thank you for the neat observations.  The original posts are being revised.  The full shikona entries were an attempt to combine the surnames and given names into a single meaning, and there was some intentional poetic license taken in the process.  There will probably be many full shikona revisions in the upcoming updates including the translations of the given names. 
Akinoshima, Aoiyama, Kagayaki and Nishikigi are candidates.

The revisions will also include much more background info on the shikona.  Asiseyame, Daiamami, Ichinojo, Sokokurtai, Takakeisho, Terao and Tsurugisho are candidates here.

Itai used his real name.  Translation attempts were all over the place, and none felt right.

Katayama used his real name. The Kata was a translation problem.  We were working with broken, incomplete and other similar meanings.  I found one reference to "remote".  Tweak updated.

I messed up the Kirishima entry.  The heya were wrong, and the shikona is a reference to Mt. Kirishima in Kagoshima.  Tweak updated. 

The Kita's.  Agree that the Kita is probably a connection to Hokkaido, but I could not confirm that.

Kotoshogiku - Ooops.  We missed that obvious connection to his real name.  Tweak updated.

Masunoyama's masu as "problem" was taken from the Chinese.  No kanji link was found.

The sources for Takamisugi sound reasonable.  Do you have a reference?  For now, we are riding with the connection to his real name.

Oginishiki makes no sense because I copied the data from Oga's entry.  I will fix the tweak.

Your assessment of Onosho looks right.  Tweak updated.

And then, there is the Ara/Ko/Ra problem.  Ara (荒) means harsh, rough, rude, stormy, violent, etc.  It shows up in about 210 shikona, but its meaning does not usually match the context of the other characters.  We found the Ara river that flows through Tokyo, and it fits most of the shikona as a place name.  Masurao, Masuraumi, Wakakoyu and Kotokuzan use it, but it could be the Ara river with a more pleasing phonetic.  We don't know.

Masurao is a real word, like I mentioned, and he just replaced the last kanji with one that has a similar meaning 益荒[男>雄]. Masuraumi and Wakakoyu are derived from him since they are his deshi; Wakakoyu specifically swapped the first kanji and changed the pronunciation of the rest [益>若]荒雄. Kotokuzan's comes from *Ara*shio

Nice to see Abi's entry has been updated to include the Asura meaning in the initial post ("Polycheires" is a neologism someone on stackexchange made up; in fact one of the few Google results for the word is me posting on here saying that it isn't a real word! If the idea is to translate shikona for people who aren't familiar with Japanese, translating the name into a made-up word defeats the purpose).

What are your thoughts on the 富士/"wealthy gentleman" meaning? It seems potentially confusing to focus on the meaning of the individual characters like that, when it's practically guaranteed that it's ultimately a reference to the mountain (though often filtered through layers of "in honour of X, stablemaster/yokozuna etc") and they should be treated together as one unit. 富士 (as in the mountain) doesn't mean "wealthy gentleman" any more than 寿司 means "long-life official", its just ateji. There's numerous theories on the etymology of the name of the mountain but none have to do with wealthy gentlemen. Again, if the idea is to interpret shikona for people can't read Japanese, this feels like a case of "not seeing the wood for the trees" if you emphasise the character's individual meanings instead of the more obvious, incredibly famous and iconic mountain.

Pretty much that issue was discussed and explained here as a methodological shortcut:

Polycheires was my own neologism from the Greek (I confess to playing a bit too much FFXIII), although admittedly Asura would have done as well. I sort of assumed that the asura would be too foreign a concept to translate well, which would itself defeat the purpose of the translation as well.

The criticisms regarding translation are precisely why we're shifting away from the original "translations" to a more rigorous backgrounding of the reasons for why the shikona were given, which would be much more meaningful to sumo fans in general. 

We're still retaining the translations to avoid discarding work, but they are essentially trivia in the grander scheme of things. Where place names are involved (and they are involved a lot of the time), the meaning of the ateji for the old Japanese names just don't really line up with the names themselves, except and unless where makurakotoba are involved. But those subtleties of meaning would take an entire afternoon to explain along with a backgrounder in Japanese, so it's difficult both ways. Yes, "fuji" doesn't mean Prosperous Gentleman, and it's probably either a direct or indirect reference to Mt Fuji, but even the Japanese don't really themselves know how that name came to be and it leaves translation stuck in a very unsatisfying rut if the "translation" is just the romaji form of the kanji. So for the first version of the project, we decided to just sod it and translate on a kanji-by-kanji basis, but that is being moved away from.

Most of our known atejis for the shikona surnames are now reflected in the tweaks.  There are only one or two prosperous gentlemen left.  The full shikona (surname and given name) entries are very much a work in progress.   Both the shikona meaning and the full shikona meaning entries in the original entries will evolve over time.

This shikona project has taken an interesting twist.  It started out as a simple effort to do character-for-character translations of the shikona.  After the first go around, Seiyashi's and my backgrounds really kicked in.  Seiyashi is a linguist who is interested in the meaning and origin of words.  I am a retired cryptographer who is interested in patterns and frequency of usage of individual words.  After publication, neither of us was satisfied with the original effort.  We have had many PM exchanges based on our background interests.  The tweaks generally reflect my interests from a pattern of usage standpoint.  The original entry changes are/will reflect the combined revisions from both of our interests.  They are much more complex, and they will require an extended period of time to be resolved.

Just replying to jog my memory here based on what was mentioned in the Taka twins thread: Uesugi Kenshin was idolised by Takanohana, and Uesugi Kagekatsu was Uesugi Kenshin's successor after he died. Probably no accident that the most illustrious of Takanohana's deshi took on the name of the successor of the Sengoku warlord that Takanohana idolised.

I have yet to look for corroboration, though, and the whole thing is taking Akinomaki's post as given, but it certainly sounds very plausible.

Hence the point of this thread to collate all that old news into somewhere obvious.

I can't see direct references to any other Uesugi - the ones that most capture the imagination frankly are those from the Sengoku period and I wouldn't expect Takanohana to be such a history buff to mine their genealogy looking for shikona. That said, the Uesugi were associated with a dragon banner, and a couple of his deshi have the dragon character in it, but that's also a frequent enough element in shikona that it's not clearly cause and effect.

Hokuto is a 2 character combination with the first character (北) being the one used in the Kita  shikona.  Hokuto is used extensively and exclusively in Hakkako heya.  Kita shows up in shikona for many heya.  It is mostly tied to rikishi from Hokkaido ( 北海道).  There are a few Kita's in Hakkako, but there are more in other heyas, so we do not tie Kita to a single heya.

What the shimazu?  New sekitori Shimazuumi calls Kagoshima (ex-Satsuma Province) home.  The Shimazu Clan ruled that area for many centuries.
