Sooooo .... there are now two M17 yusho taker in one year.   Congrats to Terunofuji!   I have never thought he'd make it all the way back.   I don't think anyone was thinking he will win it all this soon.

Wow. What a fantastic story. I feel for Asa, but he had his chance, and he'll get another I'm sure. For now, I'm just in awe of Terunofuji. So many wrote him off, and he's proven them all wrong and himself right. May he stay healthy for the remainder of his career and privilege us all with more feats such as this.

Thoughts on the 12-3 JY being the start of a tsuna run? I'm thinking no, but I'm keen to get the thoughts of longer-term fans.

My thinking is if not for the Terutsuyoshi loss, then maybe, as a loss to a Sekiwake and the eventual yusho winner isn't terrible. But that loss as me thinking no.

Asanoyama did fairly well too; only 13 shin-ozeki have made jun-yusho, and only 12 more have made either junyusho-doten or yusho outright. So his performance rates fairly well, and he'll do better in future.

The last and only 13-2 from M15-M17 was Hajimayama (M17w) in 1949.05. Next basho he was ranked M4w.

Congratulations to Terunofuji for winning the basho and for getting back from jonidan in the first place, my depest respect for that Barring injury it is absolutely possible for him to reach Yokozuna.

Quite the year for Terunofuji. Makushita yusho, Juryo yusho and now a Makuuchi yusho.

He sets a good example to others about taking the rankings hit to heal up and come back stronger. I was hoping for an Asanoyama Ozeki yusho but I can’t begrudge the former Ozeki his success. When the dust settles and the disappointment of his final few days wears off, I think Asanoyama will be otherwise pleased with his Ozeki debut. By the numbers it was the best Ozeki debut in years.

Not with a J. Might have been different if it was a D. As you pointed out, the manner of his loss to Terutsuyoshi will tell against him.

Even so, it's not a bad performance as a shin-ozeki. With a J, he equals 13 other shin-ozeki, and loses only to 12 other shin-ozeki who got D or Y. And only 13 others have recorded a 12-3 as a shin-ozeki; granted, he didn't face both yokozuna or Takakeisho but it's still a good result.

Not for me. It wasn’t a yusho equivalent, he lost to the yusho winner in their regulation bout and 12-3 really isn’t enough of a score to force the issue (as good a record as it is in more general terms).

Since he hasn't beaten a yokozuna this tournament and managed to get 3 losses, I would say this is not part of a tsuna run. If he wins convincingly and decisively next tournament with a 14-1 or even a zensho yusho I can see the YDC pull the trigger and promote him, they long for another Japanese yokozuna :)

Agreed. While previous ozeki have gone on tsuna-runs even with jun-yusho, they've all beaten at least one yokozuna in the process, even if they didn't yusho the next round. I don't see a non-yokozuna/ozeki-beating 12-3 junyusho as part of a tsuna run.

Agreed. I think he's unlucky to have been overshadowed both narratively and physically by Terunofuji; his lack of mental composure definitely cost him towards the end, but had it been any other M17 (Tokushoryu) it may well have ended very differently.

Crazy basho for a crazy year, but I'm glad for Terunofuji's fairy tale ending here.

Makuuchi has some turbulent days ahead as the old guard cycles out in favor of young blood, but it was nice to see some of the ol' favorites getting a taste of kachi-koshi again. The playoffs for juryo were fun, too. Hoshoryu is rough around the edges, but I like what I see in him. 

I came for the entertainment and was entertained. Can't complain. Peace and love, sumo peeps.
