Akinomaki 41,839 Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) For Musashigawa-beya the 4th ever from a national university, Saitama university: 庄司向志 (I'd never guessed it right:) Hisashi Shouji (22, 188cm, 130kg), from Misato-town, Akita. He started studying electric and electronic system engineering, but especially wanted to enter the sumo club - and in his 3rd year he made it to the best 32 of the national students championships. His studies didn't go well though: he repeated one year and is in his 5th year now, but will leave soon - sumo suits him better. He started it in 2nd year primary school, made it to the best 16 in his 3rd year at the inter-high. After last year's intercollegiate he began to think about turning pro - and he turns 23 in August, so this is the last chance (except for athletes with some good results - I'd still like to know how Abezakura made it). http://www.chunichi.co.jp/chuspo/article/sumo/news/CK2017062902000159.html so he wont make it into the statistics for graduates Edited June 29, 2017 by Akinomaki
Bumpkin 438 Posted June 29, 2017 Didn't the Kyokai just raise the age limit from 23 to 25?

The old limit remains, but they added a wider age limit of 25 for a select few: 4 hours ago, Akinomaki said: he turns 23 in August, so this is the last chance (except for athletes with some good results Edited June 29, 2017 by Akinomaki

Frankly i don't care how Abezakura made it, but what he has shown us so far, wasn't THAT bad. I'll have an eye on him. What's up with Yata? Mae-zumo was horrible. He likes trains and given how big he already is at only 17 (195cm, 203kg), he will someday look like a train, but i haven't seen the slightest cloud of steam coming from him. Mz 0-4, first jk basho kyujo, now Bg. Boiler already exploded or just a little bit derailed?

I think that's right, as we learned at the time of Masumeidai's joining. I guess joining sumo out of the national university system is so rare that the press is just counting everyone, sumo background or not.
Kintamayama 47,292 Posted July 1, 2017 4 new recruits for Nagoya. One joining Musashigawa, one from Naruto, one from Asahiyama and one from Tagonoura.
Akinomaki 41,839 Posted July 3, 2017 All 4 passed the initial check - so far still only Shouji is in the news o o o o
Yubinhaad 11,972 Posted July 3, 2017 (edited) Joining Asahiyama-beya is 21-year-old Joji? Takagi (高木 城治) from Chiba, 183cm and 88kg. He was previously working as an assistant director at a production company, and it was while working on a program about ozumo that he decided to enter. He has enjoyed watching sumo since he was a child but has no actual experience. Joining Naruto-beya is 18-year-old Yuta? Sato (佐藤 裕太) from Tokyo. No other info yet but he's a pretty hefty guy judging by this photo. Joining Tagonoura-beya is 16-year-old Ryusei? Noguchi (野口 龍星) from Saitama. Asashosakari 20,272 Posted July 3, 2017 (edited) http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170703-OHT1T50158.html Sato's a big guy indeed, clocking in the rare same scores of 188 cm / 188 kg in the examination. No sumo experience, but he did judo in high school, attending a school affiliated to Chiba University of Commerce. Noguchi is the next personal recruit of ex-Wakanosato. His uncle is reported to have been a member of the stable back when it was Naruto-beya, so presumably this guy. (I have zero recollection of him, which is a bit astounding given his co-leading four maezumo appearances, but then his last one was in the infant days of the DB...) He started it in 2nd year primary school, made it to the best 16 in his 3rd year at the inter-high. Examined at 190 cm now (but again 130 kg). A few more sumo results as detailed in the aforementioned Hochi article: In his final year at Yokote HS, he was part of a team that won the prefectural championship (as we're only talking about Akita here, that's probably not as major as it sounds), and in his first year at Saitama University he helped the team win the championship at the national sumo tournament for public university students. (Keep in mind that the big names are usually attending private institutions.) Incidentally, also mentioned as part of that winning high school team are one Ryota Suzuki 鈴木涼汰 who subsequently attended Tokyo Univ. of Agriculture but doesn't seem to have made any major waves as sumotori while there, and Genta Suzuki 鈴木源汰 who was apparently scouted by the big-ticket private universities for his sumo prowess but decided to attend national Tohoku University instead, and has since become a three-time individual and team winner at the aforementioned public university national championship. (Nothing really to do with this recruit thread, of course, but you never know when a guy like that might show up in [corporate] amateur results down the line, so just preserving the information for posterity.) Asashosakari 20,272 Posted July 11, 2017 (edited) Tigers on the loose in maezumo this basho: Urutora is returning and will be joining the short list of four-time maezumo passers (what an odd coincidence to have that be relevant twice in one basho), and ex-Kotooshu's Bulgarian recruit Katsarov has been named Torakio 虎来欧 とらきおう, an allusion to the Thrace / Trakia region. In addition, Naruto-beya's other newcomer Sato will be fighting as Sumidagawa 隅田川. Anyway, here are the Day 3 results, with my gratitude to One And Only for the videos once agan. Results: Mz1 Urutora (0-1) Mz2 Torakio (1-0)Mz4 Shoji (1-0) Mz3 Sumidagawa (0-1)Mz5 Takagi (0-1) Mz6 Wakanoguchi (1-0) Is it just me or did the gyoji totally screw up both shikona in the third bout? That sounded nothing like what the yobidashi announced. Consequently I also have no idea what Noguchi's shikona is meant to be - with the yobidashi it kinda sounded like "Wakanofuji", but that's clearly not correct. Wakanoguchi? Takanofuji? Standings: Mz2 Torakio Naruto 1-0 | Mz1 Urutora Shikihide 0-1Mz4 Shoji Musashigawa 1-0 | Mz3 Sumidagawa Naruto 0-1Mz6 Wakanoguchi Tagonoura 1-0 | Mz5 Takagi Asahiyama 0-1 Also, lotsa drumming to be heard in the background again, just like in Osaka. Asashosakari 20,272 Posted July 12, 2017 (edited) At the risk of being wrong I've decided to go with Wakanoguchi for now. OAO also appears to think so, maybe he's had a chance to make first-hand inquiries. Day 4: Results: Mz1 Urutora (0-2) Mz3 Sumidagawa (1-1)Mz5 Takagi (0-2) Mz2 Torakio (2-0)Mz4 Shoji (2-0) Mz6 Wakanoguchi (1-1) Standings: Mz2 Torakio Naruto 2-0 | Mz3 Sumidagawa Naruto 1-1 | Mz1 Urutora Shikihide 0-2Mz4 Shoji Musashigawa 2-0 | Mz6 Wakanoguchi Tagonoura 1-1 | Mz5 Takagi Asahiyama 0-2 Torakio-Shoji tomorrow, should be a good test for both guys. Wakanoguchi makes sense with him being Nishiiwa's uchideshi, same as Wakasatake. I agree though that they're definitely not making it easy to decipher. Incidentally the gyoji in the white outfit is the rookie Kimura Keitaro, no major blunders, if a bit quick on the draw with the gunbai in his first bout today. All part of the learning process. Asashosakari 20,272 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) Day 5: Results: Mz4 Shoji (3-0) Mz2 Torakio (2-1)Mz6 Wakanoguchi (1-2) Mz3 Sumidagawa (2-1)Mz1 Urutora (1-2) Mz5 Takagi (0-3) Torakio looked hilariously annoyed at not having won that bout. (And again at the end of the session!) And apparently we're done here already as there's no maezumo entry on tomorrow's schedule, so he won't be getting an opportunity to get that third win. The final standings: 3-win target achieved:#1 Mz4 Shoji Musashigawa 3-0 Remaining order:#2 Mz2 Torakio Naruto 2-1#3 Mz3 Sumidagawa Naruto 2-1#4 Mz6 Wakanoguchi Tagonoura 1-2#5 Mz1 Urutora Shikihide 1-2#6 Mz5 Takagi Asahiyama 0-3 I may have the order of the 1-win guys wrong; the official news on Day 8 will clarify that as always. Day 8 edit: 1-win order corrected, it's Wakanoguchi ahead of Urutora. Edited July 16, 2017 by Asashosakari

Asashosakari 20,272 Posted July 16, 2017 Turns out I had the 1-win guys wrong after all, so that's been changed above now. The shikona are confirmed, but Takagi's shusshin has been corrected to 千葉県旭市 Chiba-ken, Asahi-shi. The presentation: He wavered, but he didn't fall... It's funny, the three guys on the right kinda make each other look shorter because they're all about equally tall.
