bettega 431 Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) We finally have a japanese winning a Yusho after 10 year - 60 59 58 basho ! - how's being the repercusion media and common fan in Japan? It's overwhelming or kind of "meh, it's Giku"? Edited February 11, 2016 by bettega

Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted February 3, 2016 Does the basho count include the basho that wasn't a basho after the scandal? The "basho that wasn't a basho" usually counts in all counts that count. But in Haru 2011 really was nothing that counted because of two rather overwhelming reasons (first the yaocho scandal and after cancellation of the basho the Tohoku tsunami happened which rather likely would have lead to a cancellation or at least a stop of its own in the mid of the basho so they were incredibly lucky with the timing of the scandal). So to be exact, there were 58 basho between the Japanese yusho.

The earthquake hit the Friday before the basho would have started, I think.
wuli 67 Posted February 6, 2016 from responses here, and lack of, looks like the answer is 'meh' another basho that wasn't a basho

WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted February 18, 2016 So, it's "meh, it's Giku" No the media coverage was incredible. Don't you read the rest of the forum? The coverage went for about a week or two and then kind of dropped off. First couple of days that's what was the trending topic because hey, a Japanese born rikishi has finally won after ten years, and the craze was really about that Kotobauer move before his matches. Gurowake 4,108 Posted February 21, 2016 620m isn't much of a parade. 6.2 km maybe?
Akinomaki 40,802 Posted February 21, 2016 I don't see any different numbers in other articles - many open places there - and remember how many people can get pressed into the morning trains. 20 minutes for the 620m, a slow walk in an open car.

Akinomaki 40,802 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) Mr. and Mrs. Kotoshogiku arrived in his hometown Yanagawa, where they will have their 2nd wedding reception tomorrow, with about 600 friends etc. Today they visited the mayor. http://rkb.jp/news/news/31092/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlTd488MvRQ(donating) paying his hometown tax - 10 000 yen for each of his 14 wins last bashohttp://www.sankei.com/photo/daily/news/160226/dly1602260026-n1.htmlOn the 24th in Tendo-city, Yamagata, a party to celebrate his first yusho took place. Treblemaker 254 Posted February 29, 2016 I think the greatest fear is that in this basho, The Geek doesn't come up smelling like the stuff you put on roses in the spring. Anything less that 13 wins will probably not lead to rejoicing. Of course, for 13+ wins, some of those have to come from the likes of Hak, HF, Kak, T-Fuji and Kise. Can he do it again? Wasn't sure he could do it the first time. Happy for him, and would be happy again if he repeats, but my money's on Hakuho this time around. Just because. Akinomaki 40,802 Posted March 1, 2016 all training restarted on the 4th last month Kotoshogiku will use all kinds of training for the preparations to his Yokozuna-run. On Jan. 7th he did bike training with keirin professionals: his trainer announced that he'll intensify this next month, to strengthen his lower body and cardiopulmonary functions. He did one 500m course on the mamachari-bike and will use a better bike next, road or mountain bike, to make more rounds.http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/02/02/kiji/K20160202011966100.html And now we have it like this, with 6 rounds at the Chiba Keirin race course http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1600694.html

Akinomaki 40,802 Posted March 4, 2016 (edited) After finishing asa-geiko in Osaka today, Kotoshogiku rushed to Fukuoka again, to report his yusho to the governor. A crowd of 1000 greeted him at the governor's office - the whole building was packed with people (no info about how many per square meter). Tomorrow is the boat parade in his hometown Yanagawa - no keiko that day. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/03/04/kiji/K20160304012153190.html wife and father in the pic On the way to Osaka station, he was interviewed in the large scale station wagon. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1612380.html having the time of his life (it likely won't get better) His personal trainer again published a video of Kotoshogiku's extra training Edited March 5, 2016 by Akinomaki
