New recruits for Haru 2015

Gagamaru: "I longed to have him join our heya because he's cute."

Thats seems like a pretty strange quote if its for real. Well if lady Gaga swings that way its all cool.

For those who understand but can't read Japanese: "uchi no heya ni kite hoshikattan da yo. kawaii kara"

臥牙丸からも「うちの部屋に来て欲しかったんだよ。かわいいから」

Gagamaru: "I longed for having him join OUR heya - because he's cute."

It had been reported before that Ura plans to refrain from trying an izori on his heya-mates, but they demanded one from him and he showed it with a primary school visitor for a sumo lesson held by the heya.

Bodybuilder Yamabana with his grim face also had his first keiko in his new heya, shiko and suri-ashi: "Difficult, but it's interesting."

He has experience as instructor and his heya-mates rush to him with questions how to best do weight training. Takasago-oyakata is pleased: "It (he in the heya) is an incentive for them to get more muscles."

I propose the nickname "Le Bana" for him

Still no shikona announced for Brodik?

He doesn't need one anyway yet, his first dohyo-appearance is next basho. That makes 40 of 43 for maezumo, 2 foreigners for next time and one ms10TD.

2 Nakamura (one is Daiki), 2 Suzuki and 2 Tanaka.

Kanda is a 155kg 15-year-old? Wow.

At that rate he could be 310kgs by the time he is 30. Fortunately it doesn't work that way. I was worried about Ura putting it on so quickly but he seems to think he can handle it. He has such a strong base to work on and can handle it due to his agility. The others that don't have the strong tendons or whatever holds everything in place will quickly find that they will reach a point where they will start to get injured easily as the extra bulk becomes too much to handle.

I was amazed at the size of the kids at this year's Hakuho Cup. Some of them were massive and not just chubby. I could easily imagine them joining Ozumo. Some of them had very mature styles and I was particularly impressed with the ones that showed good sportsmanship. There will definitely be a few golden boys joining the new recruits soon. There have been so many chosen ones that failed to deliver but I'm optimistic that it will change soon. It would be interesting to do a list of how many press members showed u for new recruits vs their performances over time.

One standing out among the 43 new recruits at the shin-deshi kensa was former bodybuilder (5th in a national event for newcomers) Yamabana (22, 182cm, 129 kg) for Takasago-beya. A friend made him enter, he has neither experience nor knowledge of sumo : "It will be fun to see how far I get. I want to become famous."

He got the shikona Asayamabana, but is kyujo for maezumo.

Such a shame that Brodi isn't allowed to compete. I would have loved to see him against Ura in Mz.

New recruits by heya:

4 - Shikihide

3 - Isenoumi, Kitanoumi, Takasago

2 - Azumazeki, Chiganoura, Dewanoumi, Irumagawa, Isegahama, Kise, Minato, Sadogatake

1 - Asakayama, Fujishima, Hakkaku, Kasugano, Kasugayama, Kataonami, Michinoku, Minezaki, Nishikido, Oguruma, Shibatayama, Tagonoura, Tamanoi, Tokitsukaze

Not sure what's gotten into Isenoumi-beya all of a sudden, 3 new deshi for a stable that had only 6 total before.

New recruits by age (excluding the two new foreigners):

middle school age - 27

high school age - 6

older - 8

Not many high schoolers this year (down from 14), the other two sections are in line with the 2014 numbers.

Anyone was more "lucky" than I in digging information about Goto Kurowski ?

Googling for his last name brings up several social media accounts of his parents, including a bunch of stuff in Portuguese - I think he's either half or three-quarters Brazilian (though obviously resident in Japan). His mother has both a Japanese and a Brazilian-sounding given name and his father doesn't look Japanese at all.

Kanda is a 155kg 15-year-old? Wow.

Obara, too, and Mibu isn't far behind at 150 kg. Edited by Asashosakari

Almost half the new deshi showed up with custom shikona, which made puzzling out who's who a bit difficult - should be correct though. Thanks to some news reports and the usual array of heya websites and Facebook accounts I've managed to confirm several shikona and kanji, any help with the remaining ones is appreciated.

(Yamaguchi's presumptive shikona Takanonari is probably an alternative reading [plus 'no' particle] of 隆成 / Ryusei, his given name, but I'm just speculating, so I haven't added that.)

Day 5 edit: Shikona of the ichiban qualifiers are now confirmed.

Post-Day 9 edit: Shikona added for Takanonari and Kohakuryu.

Do you suppose they are attempting to squat in the second picture? If so, they are having mixed success. Tanaka is doing ok, but Sasaki has only got half way down and Hanai has rolled over!

Incredibly, for a change Shikihide-oyakata actually seems to have found a couple of recruits with previous sumo experience in Itoku and Saionji.

Just to add to that with the other two deshi:

Watanabe was a baseball player in middle school but apparently likes sumo so he applied to join, while Kushibiki doesn't appear to have a sports background and, fresh out of middle school, was introduced via the owner of a ramen shop the oyakata frequents.

Saionji once faced his new stablemate Baraki back in wampaku sumo and beat him.

Anyone was more "lucky" than I in digging information about Goto Kurowski ?

A freshly posted blog update by the Azumazeki okamisan confirms that he's three-quarters Brazilian, and has lived in Japan since young childhood. His shikona is Hakuyuki 伯結城, a combination of the 伯 kanji which appears in one way of writing "Brazil" in Japanese, plus 結城 for his Japanese hometown Yuki-shi in Ibaraki.
