Local supporters send Asanoyama a "certain victory" calabash, with shikona, his school motto "Love and Righteousness" (on his kesho mawashi and in his ozeki promotion phrase), cartoon portrait, "The pride of Toyama", and on the back 300 fans wrote their support messages.

The inaugural meeting is on Dec. 14th in Fukushima-city. With the makuuchi promotion of Wakatakakage last year, as the first makuuchi coming from the school's sumo club, the plan for the koenkai was born. The 3 aim to become the first 3 brothers to be sekitori at the same time, what the 3 Izutsu sekitori brothers hadn't accomplished. Wakamotoharu had a kachikoshi in mid juryo, the eldest Wakatakamoto one in mid makushita, with still a long way to go, but likely he'll make it before the Nayas come close to form a sekitori trio.

I don't believe wakatakamoto will ever reach juryo sadly. he's been stuck in mid makushita forever with middling results. The last year has been nothing but 4-3s and 3-4s, and he's almost 30. Hozan also isn't looking so good. an mk at the bottom of sandanme is a worrying sign.

Looking at the current maku'uchi I note that Tamawashi, Kotoeko, Meisei and Akua all had mks in their sandanme debuts, although admittedly none of them were as old as Hozan at the time.

I would be shocked if he became a sekitori. On the college scene he accomplished nothing, couldn't even make his university's team, and got absolutely routed by anyone half decent. Now he's already fallen short in low sandamne--a level that should be no problem for a college grad with sekitori potential. He's got a well-developed body and has been doing sumo for years, so it's not like he's some skinny green teenager who you can more realistically expect major gains from.

The quality just isn't there, particularly for balance and stability. I don't think Wakatakamoto will reach sekitori either, but he's got a better shot than Hozan.

The local koenkai of Kotoshogiku disbands end of the month. The koenkai was formed in 2004 as he made it to juryo and has about 750 members at present. Aimed for once a year after the Kyushu basho they will meet as "Hidenoyama-oyakata surround club", which should form before Kyushu this year and continue to support the oyakata. Kotoshogiku's danpatsushiki is seen as taking place 4 years later, after the danpatsushiki he wants to create his own heya, and then a proper heya koenkai will be formed.

Shikoroyama-beya got a food donation of vegetables from Mobara, Chiba, to congratulate Abi for sekiwake promotion (the heya held several fureai sumo events in the city). 50kg negi (green onions), 30kg cabbage, 30kg daikon (radish), 20kg carrots and 1kg of shiitake (mushrooms).

Abi is from Koshigaya, Saitama, but went to school in close-by Nagareyama, Chiba (where I stay when in Japan, which is another reason for me rooting for Abi), together with Daishoho.

The Utsunomiya based Tochigi pref. koenkai of Tochigi pref. related Kasugano-beya, the Kasugano-beya rikishi support club on the 14th donated to the heya 50 large masks specially made for rikishi. Of organic cotton, the company of a koenkai member produced them.

Tochinoshin: "They don't obstruct the breathing and the ears don't hurt. The best feeling ever so far."

Asanoyama dorayaki from the Kureha Seika sweets shop sell more recently, delivery to outside of Toyama is stopped though till juryo re-promotion. They send sweets to Takasago-beya regularly, when he dropped from juryo with letters of support from customers.

Tamanoi-beya yesterday received a food donation from Soma, marine products, vegetables, 660kg of rice ..., plus a gift of 50 000 yen. Mitakeumi on the 5th was home in Agematsu after 3 years again to get cheered up by the locals. His arrival was a kind of parade

Of course he promised to make it back to ozeki next basho.

About 380-400 primary and middle school kids were in the town's public gymnasium at a talk event, one of the events to celebrate 100 years since formation of the town. One who aims for ozeki wanted to have a bout with him, but he sent his tsukebito to do it. Another said he wants to aim for higher than Mitakeumi, yokozuna.

After a year and a half, Asanoyama appeared with sekitori hairstyle again at a congratulation party in Nano on the 15th with about 120 supporters - a makushita usually has an oicho mage only at his danpatsushiki. He had planned for return with a 7-0 but failed, the party still was held as if he had made it.
