Asameshimae 220 Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) I've written and said this a number of places when Baruto's name comes up recently, but: Anybody who knew Baruto at all knew he was the nicest guy in sumo. Ask any higher or lower ranked guy (no matter how low) or coach or anyone else. He was universally liked because he was just such a sweet guy. He will be sorely missed. dingo 1,477 Posted September 17, 2013 Can someone please translate this?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTfZ6yiTmLE "For the past six months, I've been indebted to everyone in Japan and all of my fans. Thank you very much. From now on I will start a regular life and try to do my best, so please root for me" A fairly simple message, but it's nice he bothered to make it. I couldn't make anything of what he mumbled in the beginning, but with your hint and further asking and listening I think he said “For 9½ years, ... “. BTW, he was on NHK as guest today. You might be right. I thought he said something like 旧年 半か年、but 九年半間 sounds more likely, though a bit unusual for my ears. Something about his intonation threw me off at first, and I automatically thought he was referring to his about half-year long injury.

I think a native speaker would rather have said "kyuunenhan no aida" for better understanding. The -kan not after the nen sounds unnatural and threw me off at first. Akinomaki 41,781 Posted December 10, 2013 Baruto's danpatsu-shiki will be on Feb. 8th in the kokugikan: “I want to have a ceremony different from what was so far.” For the first time ever, Baruto plans his danpatsu-shiki to be one open to the public. Other than an event of intai-zumo with sekitori bouts, at a plain danpatsu-shiki only members of the sumo world, heya related persons, family and friends take part. “For intai-zumo the tickets are expensive. At 7000 Yen for one person having them sit in the masu seats, first come first get it. I want to somehow bring it to success.” http://www.daily.co.jp/sumo/2013/12/10/0006560672.shtml
Mukonoso 273 Posted December 11, 2013 Getting a little sad now that it is getting closer. With his hair frizzy like in the photo it kind of gives the impression that he's letting himself go (or being more free). In this in-between time, what does he do? Does he hang out at the stable and exercise? Is he touring Japan for pleasure and relaxing? Does he have any responsibilities?
Mark.Buckton 68 Posted December 11, 2013 he left Japan some time ago IIRC.

Mukonoso 273 Posted February 8, 2014 For some reason I can't stop chuckling/chortling at the last few pics of Baruto in his normal haircut and suit. It looks like a big little boy.
Yubinhaad 11,959 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Some more pictures from the day's events. Baruto outside the Kokugikan with his wife and an unknown short guy gyoji Kimura Kankuro (thanks Hokkaiko!). Heading out to the dohyo in his mawashi one last time, to face some kids. Yokozuna Hakuho's dohyo-iri. Kyokutenho is the tachi-mochi, while Baruto's Onoe-beya stablemate Satoyama is the tsuyu-harai. Nichidai head coach Tanaka gives a speech. The gyoji for the danpatsu-shiki was Kimura Akijiro. He and Baruto were originally in Mihogaseki-beya together. Don't know who this guy is. Satoyama. Kyokutenho. Kotooshu. Tenkaiho. Hakuho. Olympic Judo gold medallist turned MMA fighter Satoshi Ishii. Baruto steps off the dohyo to allow his mother and wife to make a cut. Onoe-oyakata (former Komusubi Hamanoshima) brings the danpatsu-shiki to a conclusion with the final cut. The severed mage. Tidy-up afterwards. Mukonoso 273 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) So how is Baruto feeling these days now that he has had so much time off from sumo? Are his injuries mostly healed? Or has no one said? And while I'm thinking of it. Has any retired rikishi ever returned to the sport? Or would that not be allowed even one wanted to? Hokkaiko 50 Posted February 9, 2014 in the first pic, outside the Kokugikan, isn't this short guy Kimura Kankuro from Kitanoumibeya? Pic 8:http://s26.postimg.org/sqgdns7k9/Baruto08.jpg Baruto and moto Shirononami.
Raishu 219 Posted February 9, 2014 Has any retired rikishi ever returned to the sport? Or would that not be allowed even one wanted to? After a 'common' retirement, there is no chance to reenter as a professional Rikishi. Of course, there are a few exceptions like Juryo Sokokurai (who had to be reinstated after court's ruling) or Rikishi who had left the organization during WWII (e.g. : military service) and then returned to the Dohyo when the war was over. Here is an example, but I don't know about the circumstances involved: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=3844

Akinomaki 41,781 Posted February 9, 2014 It was no intai-zumo, but with a yokozuna-dohyo-iri and a last bout with a kid – how often is that done at a danpatsu-shiki-only event? No mention so far of how many bought just the ticket for entry and were in the hall. Anyway, he should have chosen a day before or after the Olympics – I guess that has cost him some attendance. He has brought up a sumo dojo “Sakura” 10 minutes drive away from his house in Estonia (Nikkan). Looks like he wants to become a candidate for the elections to the Estonian parliament next year (Chuspo). http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/sumo/news/20140208-OHT1T00275.htmhttp://www.chunichi.co.jp/chuspo/article/sumo/news/CK2014020902000147.htmlhttp://www.nikkansports.com/battle/news/f-bt-tp0-20140208-1255055.htmlhttp://www.daily.co.jp/sumo/2014/02/09/0006696286.shtmlhttp://www.daily.co.jp/ring/2014/02/09/0006695491.shtmlhttp://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2014/02/09/kiji/K20140209007547510.htmlhttp://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/p-sp-tp3-20140209-1255246.html
