Nagoya 2013 Videos- Promo and All Days

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit sad that the great Araibira missed today's video of my mate Wolverine Ishiura. Having trained with him and knowing what a brilliant technician he is I believe he will set some records if he keeps fighting the way he is. I am surprised at how quickly he bulked up but he still doesn't need to use fully utilise his size with his cool calm trickery.

Sorry about that. I was sad as well. My internet was temporarily down during that bout.

Takayasu is really impressive this basho.

Not only Takanoyama-Satoyama, with two of my favorites showing their agility 2 times, many interesting tori-naoshi bouts in the lower ranks as well today, with sometimes nearly identical results, I liked this set best:

Chiyohayate vs Teraoumi 1

o Chiyohayate vs Teraoumi 2 uwatenage

This spirited bout was to my liking:

o Manazuru vs Ikinoshima kotenage

And this was a spectacular final dive (start at 0:40):

o Sakaguchi vs Matsumoto tsukiotoshi

great and at the same time weird win for Ishiura. I was quite flabbergasted when i watched the bout ... it was quite early (or late?) too. But he is an exciting rikishi to watch.

When Tochinoshin hits the ground at 6:07 watch the doyho cracks...

Thanks for the videos, Kintamayama.

Some observations:

Karma's a nasty old woman. Takanoyama henkas. Then he henkas again. Twice. On the same day! Gets the Bum's Rash Rush. Had it coming.

Wakanosato - 2nd bout - look for the massive forearm-to-the-face. See? It happens all the time. A little chin massage is a good thing, even IF it's done by Yokozuna and Laymen alike.

Sokokurai - 3rd henka of the day. And against Kaisei? With him on fire, not such a good decision. No contest. Soko would have his bags full at the Juryo level.

Aran - Oh look! Another Henka (4th of the day).

So far, nothing even close to anything tsuppari. Where dem pushers and thrusters are?

Tochinoshin/Sadano waltz was a real treat. I haven't heard such grunting since Macy's had that Boxing Day sale in Queens. But it was really close. I was afraid of them having to do it all over again....

Goeido gets a leg up on Tenku. (See the video.)

Hakuho/Ozan - This was not a henka,. By MY official definition, feet should be both to the side, and almost no contact with incoming missile. Using the poor, grainy, blurry, bottom-of-beer-bottles clarity that is the Stream, it looks like Hak went for, and got, Ozan's right arm, and the rest is dust in the face. But yes, this isn't Hak's usual MO. Something's a Mr Miss. It looks like Hak, but it isn't dancing like Hak.

Gaga rolls again. For HF, too easy. My mother would have given him a better workout.

Gaga, even when rolling softly to the dohyo reminds me of those Armageddon 2012 programs on Discovery Channel, dealing with the extinction distinction when Big Space Rocks hit Earth. Someone should immediately search the dohyo for iridium and latent frozen bacteria.

And as mentioned before - where are all the Fist-In-Your-Face people?? All we're getting is Le Slow Waltz a la Grunting avec Les Bunches de Sea Elephants !! !!

Asashosakari, Kintamayama and Araibira. May your cups of sake never be empty. I can't thank you enough for your generosity in giving your time to share the action with us. The luxury of technology is a wonderful thing and we are privileged to have such a conclave of High Priests of sumo (and Priestesses). In the early 90's after I left Japan (before Youtube and the commercialisation of the internet) one of the only ways I could keep up with sumo was to have a friend send me the newspaper clippings. It wasn't a fair exchange but she requested to receive "special" playing cards for women in return.

That was a good bout for Ishiura thanks. He is a master at neutralising bigger opponents, getting himself into a deceivingly awkward position and then striking the split second the opponent flinches. He has been doing it since he was 3. He has such immense core strength for his size. It is very hard to move him out of the frog position but he knows exactly how to exploit it to his advantage.

Kisenosato's body with Harumafuji's speed, Kakuryu's brains and Aminishiki's wit/sang-froid. Would make a reasonable opponent for Hahuho.

Takanohana in his day could have done that.

Day 4:

"Henk Aran is back but definitely not hitting it out of the ball park" made my day. You're a sheer genius in inventing these (and have to be a real baseball fan to come up with this).

Thanxs a lot

Today's missing bouts from jonidan and sandanme are going up right now, if somebody's willing to tag them on the DB the file should be ready in about an hour.

That's one of the best days of sumo you'll ever see. Brilliant.

Today also juryo was full of fantastic bouts, esp. Endo, Seiro, Satoyama, Homasho, Kagamio.

Tenku gets blown out in mid-henka! Absolutely brilliant! HF must have read something in Tenku's stance because he seemed to know exactly where he was going. Wow.

Very entertaining day.

Day Clark Five. Very cute. I suppose tomorrow will be Six Pistols?

Super day, lots of entertaining bouts, and Kintamayama on a roll with the commentary... What more can one ask?

Edit: And, on seeing the video again, I am sure Azumaryu will be extremely happy to know he has been re-promoted to Makuuchi despite his bad performance so far this basho (and at a career high M13E no less) :-P .

A very exciting day and i agree fully with Kinta's comment when he says we are reminded how dangerous this sport is by today's injuries, a first for me also was seeing that stare-down, tense stuff and i have no idea why it happened, good for the ratings though i'm sure hehe., also Tokitenku intercepted like that was very funny, he was one of the rikishi i didn't like much at first but i've really come to appreciate his presence, he's kind of unique and always dangerous.

Shoulda been J3E, not 13E.. But, as we all know, a Kintamayama video without three errors is not a Kintamayama video.

Day 5- not to be missed..:

Fantastic montage of the day's bout. I found myself stopping and rewinding the playback a number of times to watch individual bouts again and again:

  • Shouhouzan/Goueidou (nirimiai)
  • Myougiryuu/Kotooushuu (with what almost looked like a [Judo] uchi-mata)
  • Tokitenkuu/Harumafuji

This being said however, the bout between Hakuhou and Gagamaru was thoroughly disappointing - Whether it is the supreme skill of Hakuhou or the fact that Gagamaru appears to be out of his depth in this honbasho, I'm really hoping to see some more spirited matches with the Yokozuno.

I really miss seeing Homasho's instantly recognisable pushing style in Makuuchi, he is my favourite rikishi and the first i supported, also i hope today's loss won't put Kotooshu off his stride, he's been really good, showing strength and good decision making under stress, love the Tin-whistling at the start Kinta, thank you again for the awesome action and humour. :)

I know there's a lot of slipping and sliding, but there's also a lot of guys simply doing belly-flops - leaning forward too much, too much momentum in the wrong direction... Still, I like it. A degree of unpredictability. Not all bouts are won with skill.

One of the more fun bouts of Day 6, between winless rikishi no less:

Maybe all of Gagamaru's power was in that hideous old mawashi of his.
