Asashosakari 20,213 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Doitsu, Exactly my point. I did not say that the schedle was wrongly done in the last few days. I said he got lucky with the schedule because of the then situation from days 10 onwards. From another perspective, there is no denying that he got the easiest schedule out of the lower megashira yushos we have seen. Why limit it to yusho rikishi? Tenho's opponents on the left, Toyonoshima's during his recent 14-1 on the right, both sorted by rank: O3e O1w Sw O2w M4e Sw M4w M1e M5e M6w M5w M7w M6w M8e M7e M9e M8e M10e M8w M11e M10w M12e M11w M12w M13e M13w M15w M14e M16e M16w Not much of a difference there, and Toyonoshima was a co-leader ever since Day 6. If Hakuho had fluked a loss on senshuraku Toyonoshima would have walked away with the yusho there without even a playoff. If anyone needs to be criticized here, it's Kisenosato for not coming through as the expected high-ranker "wall" on the path to today's maegashira playoff. Kyokutenho didn't do anything else than many ozeki have done by fluking a yusho in tournaments where all yokozuna or stronger ozeki dropped out injured, so I'm not sure how to justify a comment like "really did not deserve the yusho". Who did this time? Tochiozan? He had his chance. Edited May 20, 2012 by Asashosakari
Masumasumasu 902 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Kotoushu should be ashamed of himself. There's no excuse for going kyujo on the last day of the basho, especially when one is facing a yusho contender. This was no favor to Tochiozan. Had Tochiozan won, people would have said, "oh, he only won because Kotoushu went kyujo on the final day." Kotoushu should retire in disgrace! Treblemaker 254 Posted May 20, 2012 Could someone please supply Tenho's comments in the interview after the Award Ceremony? I'd love to know questions were asked, and what his replies were.
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Nikkan reports that Minato-beya's Nakanokuni has handed in his intai papers following the basho. (Sad goodbyes...) He made one appearance in Juryo in 2010 Aki, but it ended in a terrible 3-12 record - it seems he sustained a neck injury during a jungyo event shortly beforehand. His danpatsu-shiki will be held on the 2nd of June, after which he will stay in Japan and work at a travel agency. I'm particularly sad to see him go as I was following him, but maybe the neck injury has never healed and explained his gradual slide down the ranks. Meanwhile, unconfirmed for now, but I also hear that Taikomaru has retired as well. No date has yet been set for his danpatsu-shiki... Edit: One other retirement I've heard about, also unofficial for now, is Tokitsukaze-beya's Toyohikari. He was Toyonoshima's main tsukebito. WRONG - not on the intai list, sorry. Treblemaker 254 Posted May 20, 2012 Can a kind and loving soul post maybe a subtitled version of Kyokutenho's post win interview? Heck, I'll even go with a contribution from an unkind and unloving soul. He seemed quite emotional and overwhelmed, I think that played well with the fans, given that the Favourite Native Son was bounced.
Koorifuu 1,102 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) On a personal point of view, Kisenosato disappointed me a lot behaviour-wise these couple of weeks. I believe such a drive to win and succeed is a good thing to an extent - not when you go overboard and give extra throat shoves and pushes to other ozeki. EDIT; Just checked about Nakanokuni.. a shame to see a career get crushed on its highest point because of a chronic injury. :( Edited May 20, 2012 by Koorifuu
Torabayama 51 Posted May 20, 2012 What a great/unusual/memorable basho on so many levels. I said earlier in some thread that I hoped Tochiozan would pull it out (mostly for the Japanese yusho) but after watching Kyokutenho take it, I couldn't have been happier to be wrong. It was certainly the most moving yusho victory I've seen. Hakuho's request to take part in the yusho parade and hold Kyokutenho's yusho flag was such a great addition during the interview. Both were the pinacle of hinkaku last night. Cheers all.
Torabayama 51 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) . Hakuho has to correct Kyokutenho, who instinctively grabs his arm to hold up in the yusho parade. Edited May 20, 2012 by Torabayama

yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted May 20, 2012 If Kyokutenho wins the yusho, is he gonna take along Hakuho in the yusho car? I push this quote up for further appraisal.
Kuroyama 715 Posted May 20, 2012 Kotoushu should be ashamed of himself. It was extraordinarily disappointing, both because of the truncated yusho race and the example set by other high-ranking rikishi this basho who kept fighting through injury. I assume it would be something serious for his shisho to allow it, but I could be completely off-base here. I'm expecting to hear about anything from a ruptured spleen to a debilitating nail clipper accident.
shumitto 418 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) As a curious note, Kyokutenho was listed in this favourite thread (2ch - in Japanese) of mine as one "in risk" of retirement, back in 11.2005. Some names listed along were the ones of Tochinonada, Dejima, Toyozakura, Tochisakae... only to mention some rikishi his age who are no longer active. Orion 431 Posted May 23, 2012 I thought the kettei-sen would be refereed by a tate-gyoji. Not this one. Nobody seems to have replied to this one. All ketteisen are announced and refereed by a yobidashi and gyoji of the rank of the contestants. These were hiramaku, so they had a makunouchi yobidashi and a makunouchi-kaku gyoji. Playoffs, ketteisen, are extras, and are not counted as 'real' bouts. Orion
