Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted September 9, 2007 Asasekiryu schooled Hokutoriki in tachiai and sumo. Aminishiki showed some fast & powerful deashi. Kotomitsuki showed textbook sumo in his ozeki debut. Homasho's sumo was rock solid. Kotooshu's bout was exciting, and he won one for the gipper. Chiyotakai beat the spoiled brat with flair. Even had time to fix his hair before swiping the kensho. That's style. And Ama scalped Hakuho to snatch the first kinboshi off the new yokozuna. Sumo wrestling (sic) is a very good thing (Applauding...)

Peterao 3 Posted September 9, 2007 Lay off him. He's way out in Okinawa, where NHK broadcasts on a one-basho delay.
Tikozan 4 Posted September 9, 2007 (Sign of approval...) yes there were very good bouts today, my favourites were Ama - Hakuho, Kotomitsuki - Tochinonada and Kotooshu - Tokitenku. (Applauding...) Who could win this basho? (Clapping wildly...) I hope Kotomitsuki.
Koneko 0 Posted September 9, 2007 Who could win this basho? (Applauding...) I hope Kotomitsuki. That'd be cool, I agree. (Sign of approval...) Though I'd love to see Ama run off with the yusho...not likely, I know, but one can dream right? Great start so far - this will be an interesting basho! Doitsuyama 1,194 Posted September 9, 2007 And Ama scalped Hakuho to snatch the first kinboshi off the new yokozuna. Nope. You sure...? It's very rare for a yokozuna to give up a kinboshi on shonichi as they regularly face a komusubi. Like Ama.

It's very rare for a yokozuna to give up a kinboshi on shonichi as they regularly face a komusubi. Like Ama. Alright, I'm thoroughly confused now. Are you implying that: a) Ama's kubinage win over Hakuho didn't take place and both the results on goo Sumo and the NSK video stream were erroneous? b) it wasn't the first kinboshi that Hakuho has given up. c) komusubi are not eligible for a kinboshi over a mere beating of yokozuna, only regular maegashira can get one this way? ilovesumo 12 Posted September 9, 2007 The very cool thing happened after Ama's win- the speaker was telling the people (with a sharp teaching voice) not to throw the zabuton. (Applauding...)

I think © is correct. Sanyaku rikishi are not eligible for kinboshi. The unofficial ginboshi would have been a better comment.
Yuriyama Ren 1 Posted September 9, 2007 Ah, I see. Well, even without kinboshi it was still a beautiful bout. (Applauding...)
Kintamayama 45,564 Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) The very cool thing happened after Ama's win- the speaker was telling the people (with a sharp teaching voice) not to throw the zabuton. (Applauding...) He always does that, but the difference was that he did it at least THREE times during Makuuchi-at the beginning, at the shimpan koutai and BEFORE Hakuhou's bout, not to mention after it as well.. It's probably something new, they probably want to stop the age old ritual. He used very stern words, like "anyone causing damage or injury with the zabuton will be prosecuted fully" etc. But it didn't help much.. Yuriyama Ren 1 Posted September 9, 2007 The very cool thing happened after Ama's win- the speaker was telling the people (with a sharp teaching voice) not to throw the zabuton. (Sign of approval...) I thought the zabuton barrage was rather half-hearted. Maybe it was because of the schoolteacher scolding but it kinda felt like the crowd didn't consider the bout worthy enough to get off their asses and toss their zabuton. The picture was completely different last basho when Kotomitsuki won his bout against Hakuho. Ama gets no respect.. (Applauding...)

Koneko 0 Posted September 9, 2007 The picture was completely different last basho when Kotomitsuki won his bout against Hakuho. Ama gets no respect.. (Applauding...) Hmm, from what I've read Ama seems to be quite popular. Last basho was Mickey's ozeki run, and the public had followed him closely for nearly two weeks - I don't think you can compare them like that. (Then again, what do I know.)

Usually, the out -of- town basho crowd is rowdier-they even eat pieces of the dohyo, I'm told. That, and the fact that the "scolding" sounded pretty serious - I'll bet some people were actually intimidated by it.

Yeah, last night I read about SalParadise getting his ribs kicked in during the dismantling of the dohyo in Nagoya '06. Kotooshu insulted my footwear Pretty funny. Sorry for going (Applauding...) , just thought I'd throw it out there for the enjoyment of my fellow n00bs.
Fujisan 533 Posted September 9, 2007 Is it me or is Hakuho in the habit of losing on Shonichi? It certainly feels like he loses more often than he wins.

While I quite enjoyed Sal's story, and I like his writing style, I would take it all with a handful of salt. He admits to being drunk at the time (memory issues, anyone...), and in reading his posts on other message boards, quite the confrontational character. Incidents no doubt occur, but it takes two to tango. And, the rowdies always dab the corners of their mouths with a serviette after eating dirt ;-)
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted September 10, 2007 Kakizoe stormed out to a win to start his climb back up to the join the joi-jin. Goeido won his first makuuchi bout over a weak-looking but determined Hakurozan. TochiO3 won over perenial crowd fav Kita-Zak. Kyokutenho's comeback continues. Kokkai still hits like a ton o' bricks. Kasugao charged! A won with oshizumo! Robocop beat a fellow Aomorian. Some guy that looks like Kaiho won too. And Shogun beat the Stay Puffed Marshmello Man. (Clapping wildly...)
