Hashira 0 Posted July 18, 2003 it seems to me that there are no rikishi currently capable of going zensho, with the exception of a healthy musashimaru, something which, it seems, we will never see again. so i was thinking, when could the next makuuchi zensho possibly happen? im saying 2007 or later. guess we might have to wait a long time to see if im right

I guessed 2005.
Tokimori 0 Posted July 18, 2003 Shoryu in 2004. When he has matured a bit, put on some weight, getting some easy wins... No biggie for him... :-P
Zenjimoto 40 Posted July 18, 2003 I think Kakizoe in 2005. :-P Cheers Zenjimoto
Asashosakari 19,688 Posted July 18, 2003 Ditto on Asashoryu in 2004. :-P He was close enough in his two yusho that got him promoted to Yokozuna, I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to get back to that level of sumo again and have the needed luck for a zensho at least once pretty soon. Fujisan 533 Posted July 18, 2003 Asa its gotta be,maybe not next year-2005 I think. But maybe not till Kaio and Shuzan retire.
Asashosakari 19,688 Posted July 19, 2003 (edited) But maybe not till Kaio and Shuzan retire. Not to split hairs, but 'shuzan is a non-factor as regards Asashoryu's bouts when he's not at a sufficiently high maegashira rank. And Kaio...well there goes that needed luck I mentioned. :-D Surely Asa isn't going to lose against him all the time, so he just needs to win the other 14 bouts when he does beat him. :-P Anyway, I don't generally subscribe to the theory that a single zensho yusho proves that a rikishi is more dominant or whatever. Going 14-1 including a fluke loss can be just as dominating over the competition, just like a 15-0 might include several opponents slipping at the tachi-ai and giving each wins. Now, Takanohana's consecutive zensho back in 1994 were something else, of course. :-D I guess that went a tad :-P from the original question. Oh well. :-) Edited July 19, 2003 by Asashosakari
Fujisan 533 Posted July 19, 2003 Yes I did know a low ranked shuzan wouldnt be a factor- It was meant to be a dig(in fun) at Asas recent troubles with him.
Takanobaka 0 Posted July 19, 2003 This is very hard to tell, if for nothing else, because it's more of an injury prediction than anything else. Shoryu has shown the ability to pull off zensho, but then again, so has just about everyone else at Sekiwake or higher, if they're on for the tourney and there are significant injuries (which there should be more of at the ozeki level if the new rule goes into effect). Either way, I think we're about due for one...I'll say it happens in 2004. There's gotta be at least one tournament where everyone's fairly beat up and someone is on a hot streak. For all I know between now and then, Takanotsuru could get a martian jewel embedded into his arm that turns him into a superhuman green freak with amazing tachiai powers..... Asashosakari 19,688 Posted July 19, 2003 Takanotsuru [...] a superhuman green freak with amazing tachiai powers..... Now won't we wish that we'd saved this smilie :-P for him if that really happens. :-D
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted July 19, 2003 I said 2007 or later... Luck plays a part, as is willingness to henka and determination. If you're 12-1 with guaranteed yusho, you might not give 100% on the final two days.
Naifuzan 1 Posted July 19, 2003 If you're 12-1 with guaranteed yusho, you might not give 100% on the final two days. If you're 12-1 you're probably not gonna get a zensho even if you give 100% the last days (Sigh...)
AOZORA 0 Posted July 21, 2003 Asashoryu in 2005. I hope he will be matured until that and gained more weight. (Applauding...)

Feginowaka 53 Posted July 22, 2003 I think Asashoryu will do it, and pretty soon. I guessed 2005. You write "pretty soon" and vote for 2005? I also think, that it won't happen before 2005, but that is not soon. For me soon would be this or next year. To tell who the zensho rikishi gotta be, is another question. Most obvious would be Asashoryu, as he has been very close at Hatsu. But I think (or hope) that the next zenso will be from .... . . . KOTOMITSUKI ! (If and when his injuries once heal completely (Shaking head...) )
Usagi 36 Posted August 16, 2003 Without major injuries, Asashoryu will make a 15:0 in Aki 2004.
