Sumo: Injury-hit Kaio pulls out of Autumn tournament

(Kyodo)

Veteran ozeki Kaio, who sustained a right hamstring injury earlier this month, decided to withdraw from the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament after picking up his third straight loss on Tuesday.

Kaio's withdrawal from a tournament is his third this year and first since the 33-year-old Tomozuna stable wrestler pulled out of the summer tournament in May due to a lower back injury.

"He has been totally out of form and the injury has proved more serious than I initially thought," stablemaster Tomozuna said. "He's got a lot of things stacked up inside him, considering his age."

Kaio suffered the injury during a practice session on Sept. 4, a week before the opening of the ongoing 15-day tournament at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

The pullout means Kaio will lose his ozeki rank unless he posts eight wins or more at the Kyushu meet in November.

Man that sucks, I really don't want to see him lose his ozeki rank (Pulling hair...) . Maybe he will do really good next basho.

Thanks for the early news! (KaioU...) This probably doesn't surprise anyone... We all expected this any day. (Pulling hair...) :'-( (I surrender...)

It is a bummer but he had no business being out there. It was depressing to watch him wrestle the last three days.

Glad to see it. Was worried that he would aggravate/reactivate a previous injury by over compensating for the current one.

It may sound funny, but I'm happy to read this. I was really afraid too, that he would only aggravate the injury.

"He can't do his usual Sumo. The situation was so grave we feared it might end his career, so we decided to withdraw", said Tomozuna Oyakata.

Mickey is gonna pick the fusen tomorrow !

Let's hope this propel him in order to get double digits at the end of the basho regardless of the horrend sonichi fight.

(Pulling hair...) Now I've got serious problems with my picks in all the sumo games I play.

So with the ozeki in such bad shape here, it appears Wakanosato will get another visit to Heartbreak Hotel in Kyushu. Would love to be wrong though.

I for one, am glad Kaio pulled out. He should have just not started at all this time. But I guess he thought it was his duty to at least make an appearance. Good spirit that way I guess.

You know what would be real nice during the next between basho break? To hear that Kaio is doing more stretching, and that he started seeing a chiropractor, and a really strong massage therapist. I think if he did a lot of warm up type things, and then worked out moderately starting as soon as possible after he heals up, loses a few kilo's and then starts ramping it up a couple weeks before the next basho, he could do ok.

It seems like his main problem lately is that he isn't maintaining very well, and that he overdoes it in a very short burst of training at the last minute.

Maybe in his mind, he's just biding his time, now. I guess he must have been pretty discouraged by his near misses. All the unfulfilled anticipation he must have had in his Tsuna runs lately, must have really hurt his mindset and self image when he failed over and over at the last.

Maybe his mind will ease with the break this basho, and he will start thinking, "OK, maybe I can give it a run just one more time...."

Hope that's how it shakes out. I'd like to see him give it one final heroic try, before he fades into the sunset. Blaze of glory and all that sort of stuff.

Diagnosis-right thigh ligament tear? (??????????????) - one month rest.

Will we see him in Las Vegas? There is a strong possibility that his injury won't be healed well enough by that time for him to be able to compete, even in an exhibition. Is he still allowed to accompany the other makunouchi rikishis on the trip so that he can at least make an appearance? Is there any rule covering a rikishi going on a koen even though he may not be able to actively take part in it? ;-)
