Mitoryuu intai

Recommended Posts

Former Makuuchi Mitoryuu (31, Nishikido), currently Makushita 7W, submitted his retirement notice on the 19th, which was accepted, the Kyokai announced today. He dropped to makushita this basho and was absent from the first day. He will hold a press conference on the 20th with his Oyakata, Nishikido (former sekiwake Mitoizumi). Mitoryuu, a native of Mongolia, arrived in Japan on the same flight as future rikishi Terunofuji and Ichinojou, enrolling at Tottori Johoku High School. He went on to Nihon University and became a student Yokozuna in 2016. He made his sumo debut in Natsu of 2017, ranked Makushita tsukedashi 15. Armed with his right-hand grip, he advanced to Juryo in Hatsu 2018 and Makuuchi in Aki of 2022. During his five basho in  Makuuchi  his highest rank was Maegashira 13E.

Interesting, Google has him listed as a "former rikishi" despite none of the sources available in English seeming to indicate his retirement yet (there are multiple if you search for his name in kanji).  His English Wikipedia page has been updated when you go to it directly, but the Google preview is still using a cached version from at least several hours ago.

I'll miss his presence for familiarity alone, he never seemed to have picked up much technique and seemed to have recently picked up / worsened an unspecified injury.

Good luck for the future, big guy.

Most memorable bout: his first ever, a loss to Akua, which made him realise the bad habits the first foreign amateur yokozuna (also student yokozuna) brought from amateur sumo. Asked about a memorable bout he won: "There is none"

Accordingly, there was none posted with his intai articles so far

Somebody should ask him if he's a member of Nambla (Nippon Association Marlon Brando Look-Alikes)

Not sure if he was being a bit tongue-in-cheek and it didn't come across in the text, but i actually felt real bad for him on reading the news articles:

https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2025/09/20/kiji/20250920s00005000195000c.html?page=1

- his general feelings on retirement? 'regret and gloominess, i think on how i could have persevered or done better'

- most memorable sumo moment? *detailed answer about how losing to akua in his first bout, then getting a makekoshi in his first basho and the accompanying realization of his shorcomings and how far from the top he was will stay in his memory always*

- memorable victory? 'nai desu'

I do wonder who much higher Mitoryu (or Ichinojo) might've climbed if they'd somehow landed in Isegahama instead of Terunofuji.

Moot speculation, as Terunofuji didn't land in Isegahama initially.
