Kintamayama 47,097 Posted September 3 (edited) Today, Isegahama Oyakata (former Yokozuna Terunofuji) revealed that Takerufuji , who withdrew from the previous tournament due to a torn right biceps tendon, underwent surgery in August to repair the injury. He has yet to resume sumo training, raising concerns about his participation in the Aki basho. The 26-year-old Takerufuji was only able to do shiko at the heya in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, on the 3rd. Isegahama Oyakata offered a cautious outlook, saying, "He's currently undergoing rehabilitation. I hope he recovers fully and achieves results that live up to expectations." Takerufuji has struggled with injuries since winning the Haru basho as a new Makuuchi division rookie. If he misses the entire Aki basho, he'll almost certainly be demoted to Juryo for the Kyushu basho in November. You can delete the "almost." From M12, he needs a minimum of 4 wins to avoid demotion.

I would , but that would be changing the original writer's article, which is rude.. Sometimes I feel people are forgetting that I'm translating these verbatim, and not actually writing this. Usually. In reality, I don't know much about sumo myself. I do a mean translation, though. Usually. 3 1
Kintamayama 47,097 Posted September 4 If Takerufuji misses Aki, it could mean the end of a long line of Makuuchi rikishi from Aomori, a tradition dating back to 1883.Takerufuji is the only Makuuchi rikishi from Aomori, ranked 12E.. The other sekitori from Aomori are Nishikifuji, Juryo E3, and Takarafuji, Juryo E12 Aomori's pride is now in a delicate situation.

Katooshu 3,468 Posted September 4 (edited) Unfortunately he's been brittle since middle school, and it's really showing now under the pressures of sumo at the highest level. At least he didn't waste any time and won the top prize straight away once in makuuchi, before injuries took a prohibitive toll. Reonito 1,757 Posted September 12 This is good news, obviously it's sad that he got injured again, but it would have been worse if he tried to fight a few weeks after bicep surgery.

Kintamayama 47,097 Posted September 14 He underwent a check-up at a hospital in Tokyo on the 12th and was diagnosed with a "ruptured right biceps tendon, requiring one month of rest, treatment, and rehabilitation." He injured it in a match against Sadanoumi on the sixth day of the Nagoya Basho in July, and although he continued to compete, he suffered a series of losses and withdrew from the tournament on the 13th day. Isegahama Oyakata revealed before this basho that he had undergone surgery on the injured area in August and was expected to miss the entire tournament. If he does miss the entire tournament, he will surely fall to Juryo. Unless Nishikifuji and Takarafuji return to Makuuchi next basho, it will be the first time in 142 years that Aomori prefecture will not have a single Makuuchi rikishi.
dingo 1,471 Posted September 15 (edited) Nishikifuji seems off to a good start. Takarafuji on the other hand is dangerously close to a drop to makushita which would probably mean retirement. As a side note I have to really focus more on reading names *properly* because I initially skimmed over this thread and thought Nishikigi is the sole hope for Aomori. Which would've been pretty bad cause he's got 2 losses out of two bouts. Edited September 15 by dingo

That context makes Hakuho's advice to go for the yusho seem all the more appropriate.

Asashosakari 20,195 Posted September 16 Yeah, I don't think Hakuho was in a position to say anything during that particular tournament. (It was the one directly after the Hokuseiho scandal broke.)
