Hakuoho if he wins his match https://x.com/sumokyokai/status/1972149307219562651 Thanks! Grok gives a similar if very garbled translation
I am the Yokozuna 222 Posted September 28 Very disappointed in Kotozakura - injury or no injury he just seems to be having a personal issue with Hoshoryu. When you allow someone to get your skin to the point you risk your health, you have lost the bigger picture.

Octofuji 431 Posted September 28 Fantastic sumo by Wakamotoharu, but I don't know what Aonishiki was doing with the high back kick. Trying to avoid a foot sweep maybe.
Akinomaki 41,815 Posted September 28 21 hours ago, Akinomaki said: Aonishiki definitely will get the next sansho, he deserves the ginosho again, but also the shukunsho, if Hakuoho loses tomorrow and Hoshoryu wins. Takanosho fix for the kantosho and Hakuoho the shukunsho on a win plus Onosato yusho. To have 3 sure sansho, maybe Ura gets the ginosho, definitely a sansho with a win. Aonishiki gets the shukunshu if Hoshoryu gets the yusho, Hakuoho now that his win made him elegible for a sansho, got it just for his win against basho top Onosato. Beating the yusho winner is the standard reason to hand out this sansho, else the shukun points are according to rank of the beaten opponent, and his result. Onosato was sure to reach at least a doten, but Aonishiki should have been on level with Hakuoho on a Hoshoryu win. But he already has another sansho and Hakuoho has a kinboshi and is more outstanding at his lower rank than a sanyaku. Apart from Ura, also Shishi and Tomokaze were named as candidates in the sansho committee, but none got enough votes. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2025/09/28/kiji/20250928s00005000188000c.html?page=1

Godango 1,092 Posted September 28 My local rugby league team literally just made the grand final and now this. What a fantastic evening. COME ON HOSHORYU!!
Gospodin 268 Posted September 28 Now that was impressive from Hoshoryu. Onosato caught completely off-guard.

Akinomaki 41,815 Posted September 28 Aonishiki failed to break the 11 win barrier, which was reported as his goal this basho, and he even fell behind Takanosho to 4th place. But another 11 wins next basho should be enough to be ozeki within this year.
Benihana 1,972 Posted September 28 (edited) Wow, 2 Yokozunae fighting out who will have his first Yokozuna yusho in a doten. Should be a pretty rare occurence. Edited September 28 by Benihana
Benihana 1,972 Posted September 28 (edited) Damnit, Hosh almost had him. Congrats to Onosato! Edited September 28 by Benihana

Akinomaki 41,815 Posted September 28 Both yokozuna showed that they are worthy of the rank, but Onosato is definitely one class above Hoshoryu
Octofuji 431 Posted September 28 Wow! What an ending to a great basho. It looked for all the world like Hoshoryu had it won.

He didn't seem under that much pressure from Hoshoryu I didn't notice the feet, it went very fast and I'd say Hosh's nodowa was quite a pressure! But Onosato did a great job recovering for the 2nd bout! Very well done. What a thrill, I was hoping for a 3rd bout treat (torinaoshi) but it just didn't happen

Onosato´s counter was a show of brute force, not many could have pulled that off. I think this is also what sets the two Yokozuna currently apart.
dingo 1,477 Posted September 28 Wonderfully exciting finish! In the first bout Onosato started pulling and that was it, he already knew he had lost before he stepped out. Somehow I had a feeling Hoshoryu might pull a henka for the second bout cause Onosato had a bad tachiai in the first and was sure to come out with more force in the second. But I guess Hoshoryu wouldn't dare to henka in the ketteisen, though he did move to the side a bit. Very close finish, even a mono-ii so not a lot between the two yokozuna. Akinomaki 41,815 Posted September 28 The NHK interviewer like me thought that a win by Hoshoryu would be enough to get Aonishiki the shukunshu, in the sansho interview he presented him as the winner of both ginosho and shukunshu and later apologized. Bunbukuchagama 976 Posted September 28 So, was Hoshoryu healthy today and then magically hurt again?

Katooshu 3,485 Posted September 28 (edited) I thought Hoshoryu took Onosato's spirit in that first match. Onosato looked demoralized in a way I hadn't seen, and at that point I was expecting Hoshoryu to beat him again. Hoshoryu was very smart coming out hard - Onosato clearly wasn't expecting that blast in their first match. But credit to Onosato, he regrouped and delivered in the rematch for a great win - 5 yusho in 11 total makuuchi tournaments is a crazy number Edited September 28 by Katooshu
Akinomaki 41,815 Posted September 28 (edited) 12 hours ago, Akinomaki said: With today's (fusen) win, Onosato has secured the most wins of the year award. He is at 60 wins, leading by 16 wins, 2nd are Kirishima and Aonishiki (his January wins were in juryo and don't count). o All 3 lost, so it's still a lead by 16 and only 15 basho days left. Onosato has (makuuchi) most wins of the year assured as sole winner of the award. Else a full kyujo and 15-0 by Aonishiki next basho could have meant a joint award. A kyujo still could get Aonishiki more total wins this year, but juryo doesn't count. Edited September 28 by Akinomaki
